We once had a superb Sunday lunch at the Howard Arms about 15 years ago and by some minor miracle it sounds like it hasn't changed. Sadly, I suspect that Tom's experience with the staff of the other hotel (regarding cheese) where they stayed will increasingly become the norm. I'm greatly envious of his Mk VI Bentley.. even after the passage of 70 years, the quality remains. (I wish my wife shared that view!)

Hi Tom,thanks for info regarding your Bentley the coachwork of which I got completely wrong! I was born in Tetbury in 1942;it has some great antique establishments. When next in the North Cotswolds with "Reggie" try the following;- Dovers Hill Edge hill Fish Hill Stanway Hill SunrisingHhill. Or indeed almost any hill going up the Cotswold escarpment. When you were in Ilmington you had Juniper Hill right behind you. I have cycled some of these when I was younger & fitter! Cheers!

Lovely car Tom. Such fun to own and drive, with gorgeous details. A car like your Bentley is an endearingly different experience from jumping into your modern 'hatchback'; whilst civilised road-trips down to Italy are still entirely feasible! Many thanks for your video, keep up the good work. Cheers, William.

Thanks William. Yes, it's a different world with a slower pace (although in his day Reggie would have done 100mph). They loved him in Italy!

Luv this Old England stuff......I can hinge with it. Sounds a bit bad this...but I was almost born in the back of an R type Bentley. My father was a a consulting civil engineer up in Norhtumberland and didn't hang around as according to the reels of 16mm Bell and Howel film that my sister has archived. I'm now over 70 but still have three Westerly sailboats that are scattered throughout Europe....two Cirrus and a Tiger. Bentleys (actually RR's) and Westerlies go together like good wine and fine cheeses. Unfortunately, though ,I don't have a Bentley but would love an 'R' type like those golden 60's again.

Thanks. He (Reggie) is one of only six coach-built on that model by Freestone and Webb. You're right about the engineering too. He may not always be easy to work on, but in eight years and at the age of almost seventy, he has never let me down.

Ilmington is not at all far from Stratford on Avon. I once went out there from Stratford whilst visiting a good friend, who in turn was friends with a farming family in Ilmington. Tom's Bentley was at that point 25 years old. We had lunch in nearby Mickleton.

Her coachwork is either Mulliner or Hooper but I,m sure you,ll put me right! Does she have a name? There,s a guy called Peter Baker who has a 1954 Daimler Conquest called "Doris" & she has just been on the Monte Historique Rally. She also takes part in hillclimbs! It certainly does George. Socking great big ones with finned drums. The fronts are hydraulic, the rears rod-linked. All four are servo-assisted from gearbox pressure. Don't ask me how that works. it just does. Hooking it up is no fun though.

Hi Terry. Funny you should say that. Reggie has always been beautifully behaved, as you would expect, but just before Covid, we went to Blenheim in him (they actually invited us in through the gates!). Something went to his head after that and the day after he refused to start. Never been known before. Unheard of! The best engineers I know, including the AA, have suggested various solutions, but we haven't found the problem yet. Tom

Tom Cunliffe - Yachts and Yarns Tom you might like this little poem I wrote about the Victory. The Victory was 7 years in the making Nelson was 7 years on shore a’waiting. Both were born in the same year One with wood the other without fear They say it took 100 acres of oak just to build this great one On three decks, 104 was the number of gun And 2 foot thick was she at the waterline But she wasn’t a ship without design Twenty six miles of rope to rig her is true And to get her anchor up took seventy two men times two.
