And then supposedly value bet his 8 high vs what he thought was 72.
@sco9616
@sco9616 2 года назад
I think ur giving him wayyyy too much credit, and I dont think he is trying to induce a bluff at all, and i think what he said after (about planning to call 100% w 8 high) is probably bravado, but I could be wrong ofc. What I will say is if he was caling the river it had to be because he put him on 72.. if so, why shove the river.. other than "to be sre".. but if that was your logiic.. fod the flop to be sre and save 250K EUROS, maybe?! Anyway, imo he more likely is (just gambling and) trying to rep a strong hand by flatting (which actually is good way to rep it rather than re-raising) and force Dwan to give up on his bluff, which obv worked so fair play...so sure, MAYBE he read it the same as Nanonoko was callin the commentary.. (a check-raise on that board after flatting pre IS a bit odd).. but tbh I just think, like a fish often does, he simply decided to just "put him on" 72o.. if its not that (putting him EXACTLY on 72), then calling to INDUCE A BLUFF is awful when half the bluffs ALSO beat your 8 high.. Like, ASSUMING that Dwan has enough bluffs in his range to make this a good call in the first place, that means he is blffing a LOT.. and u would then have to assume it includes T9s..JT..why not Q9s? etc.. u see what I'm getting at. As t happens, I don't think Dwan will bluff a lot in this spot, and 72o is the main bluff he has tho if I was to add more likely ones it would be gutters like JTo which got there on river anyway, and even if they didn't hit river THEY BEAT 8 HIGH.. I know, I know.. Dwan did have 72 THIS time.. but it just aint good poker in the long run. It was ridiculously risky because, first of all, with the stack sizes he was PRAYING that Dwan gave up on the river w less than pot left, as like other players pointed out, Dwan would often just continue and shove his bluffs leaving the opp no option to reshove Dwan and win that way knocking out hands like small pocket pairs that missed, 98 J9s Q9s etc as well.. the only way he would then win is being FORCED to call and PRAY that Dwan had 72op and not some "bluff" that was actally winning (or indeed a 55, AQ AK etc!!!) .. In terms of the likelihood of the play working out, sure Dwan COULD have 72, and did sure, THS time.. but also could be 55, AK, AQ and maybe slowplayed QQ.. JT also could've been a flop bluff and it got there w a str8 but tbh given the board and pre action I am not sure Dwan would attempt many bluffs other than 72o w the 72o game ongoing, and that means there's more value hands (55,AK,AQ,QQ) combos than there are bluffs.. making his calls horrific. Im for sure making some assumptions that could be way off.. like, maybe Dwan bluffs loads of his other air as well like 45s eg.. but tbh that would mean there are plenty "bluffs" that are actually beating 8 high as well.. like maybe he turns missed set mining hands into bluffs like 33 in order to fold out better pairs ike 88/99.. so 33 is beating 8 high.. ... maybe Q9s etc as well.. and if Dwan ISNT bluffing much then the play is bad for a more obvious reason..Dwan is going to show up with a boat in that case! I just doubt Dwan is bluffing much in this spot having watched him in recent years he is much more tight and str8forward vs fish in general.. also on this dry Axx flop it LOOKS bluffy... now that can go 2 ways and it depends what evel the opponent is thinking.. if he knows it LOOKS bluffy then it actually should look LESS bluffy (if he knows that Dwan knows he knows it looks bluffy!!! :-P ) fwiw this, along with the stack size situation) I believe is why Dwan assumed the other guy HAD TO have it.. because calling the turn otherwise is suicide.. but I guess he underestimated either what level this guy is thinking, OR what stupid things a rich fish can do just for the sake of bravado at the table!!! Having said all that, I know absolutely nothing about Dwans opponent in this hand.. he might've been levels and knew Dwan would have to give up and knew that Dwan was more likely on 72o than anything else.. (but for that to be true he would have to know Dwan NEVER flats QQ AK AQ ...and NEVER bluffs anything other than 72o.. leaving only 55 and 72o as the hands he is check raising that flop with .. is that likely??? i highly HIGHLY doubt it ) So, imo, its just that its the type of thing see from fish who love to "put someone on a hand" and if they happen to be right THIS time they feel vindicated like they were "right" but , as I said, thats not how "good" poker works, and its a sure way to lose money in the long run. EDIT: Just realized something I cannot BELIEVE I didnt notice before.. - Rui HAD A 7 IN HIS OWN HAND (making it so much less likely Dwan had a 72) .. this tips it from debatably bad play to CERTAINLY terrible play imo!

This is closer to gambling I'm pretty sure. If real poker is nosebleed stakes, degen bluffs with the 72 game on, then yea sure. But there's almost no way either player is taking a GTO-informed line in this particular hand. Maybe Dwan is to some extent, but I don't think a solver would ever recommend that you float flop and turn with 8 high in a three-bet pot so as to steal it on the river. Very entertaining television, but I don't think there's much to learn here for anyone.

Don't forget these guys have a lot of experience with each other and there is a lot of play leading up to this that goes into the metagame and dynamic between the two that isn't showing on camera. What Rui Cao was actually thinking' I'm not sure. Since he even had a blocker to 7-2 by holding 7-8. I very much doubt he would have called the river despite him claiming he would have called. Excellent play though. It's kind of similar to what Dwan did to Ivey all those years ago but that time it worked. And Ivey had hit a pair of 7s on the river.

The ONLY reason to call turn rather than raise turn is to keep 72 in the pot. Against all other bluffs, you would want to raise turn to stop them from rivering value or bluffing again (since you lose to them.) Which makes the shove actually the most insane part of this hand. If you thought Tom's range had bluffs other than 72, then you have to raise turn. But if you think he has only 72, then you would have no reason to shove river, because you check and win. So, for this bet to make sense, he had to think both that Tom WOULD shove 72 on the river, but he would NOT shove his other bluffs on the river and rather X/F them. I suppose it is also possible that he thinks Tom's range is 72 exactly but also some thin value like a queen, which is going to X/F to a river bet. Or he's drunk. Hmm.

All in 8,7 high is an absolutely insane read. I don’t think Tom could believe what was happening. But his final decision was the only thing that let him down. Should have gone all in at the end and Cao would surely have folded at that point. The worst thing Tom did was to ask Cao the value of his stack after the flop, nobody with a good hand is going to say things like that. Cao smelt blood from that point onward.
