Only reason the main character could keep believing for the rest of his life is because he left the bell in the sleigh. The other kids probably woke up thinking it was a dream, but the main character got confirmation through Santa's note.

The animation is actually gorgeous in this movie. The internet loves to "hate" on this film for the uncanny valley but it's seriously not that bad. I've been adoring Polar Express since I was a child and never got bothered by the facial animation

There's a theory that the bum and the conductor are different versions of the kid as an adult. A version that believes in santa and another that doesn't
@vilmublues752

Saw this for the first time with you! I hear quite a bit of people hate it for the graphics and the atmosphere, but I really liked it. I like how it had kinda melancholic vibe at times, I think it fits how the Hero Boy is at the point in his life where he is starting/about to lose his child-like wonder. It feels unique. And I like how the conductor was _the_ good character taking care of the kids, but he was also kinda short-tempered and stuff (not all 100% nice like he'd be in some other Christmas stories.) According to a deleted scene, the hobo ghost actually died many years ago when he got caught between the roof of the train and the ceiling of the tunnel, so yeah he made sure to save the kid from the same fate.

Someone pointed out to me that the girl also has her doubts about Santa, it's just shown super subtly to where it flies under the radar. How? By the "Are you sure?" thing. Sure, she SAYS she believes in everything, but there's still a little voice in the back of her head saying, "Are you sure?" That's why she freezes up whenever someone says that. What if she was wrong this whole time? What if all this is meaningless? So when they're at the North Pole, and she finally says, "Absolutely!", that was the film's way of telling us she now finally truly believes it's all real. That's why she didn't initially hear the bells.

This movie has my all-time favorite depiction of the North Pole in a movie by FAR I always imagined the North Pole as this festive holiday city-state on an island in the Arctic Sea, with various factories and testing facilities for toys and games, residential buildings for the elves, a central grand plaza and a castle for Santa, etc Not just the little Christmas workshop by itself in the middle of nowhere, haha I especially love the pneumatic rapid transit system for the elves to get from district to district- Just a great touch lol

One thing I've caught about this movie over the years: When they're walking around the north pole, they hear the elves talking about the last present having candy cane paper and a green number 7 bow. You're supposed to think that it's Billy's present, but eventually, you notice so is Hero boy's present. Leaves you to wonder: did Santa know he was going to lose the bell?

The Ghost/The Hobo's name is King, He died on Christmas Eve in the year 1933 boarding The Train, declaring Himself "The King of North Pole" or "King of The Polex" but later on Just as The Snow starting falling as The Train went down The Hill, He saw up ahead The Flat Top Tunnel but it was too late for Him, He got crushed and scraped off the roof of The Polar Express by Flat-Top Tunnel, He didn't even have to scream, He didn't have time to holler, He didn't even have time to cry, and this implies that He probably died a slow and painful death. and it's also why He showed up under that Train, and That's how He knew the specifics, and the dangers of Flat-Top Tunnel which in result ended up saving The Hero Boy, How else would He know the exact gap between The Polar Express and Roof of Flat Top Tunnel? Plus it's hinted all over The Movie, and one of those hints being during The Runaway Caboose when He disappears the moment He hit The Tunnel. That's about 71 years before The Hero Boy/Chris (Yes His name is Chris) met the ghost on top of the Observation Car in 2004, and if You look closely in The Engine Room of The Polar Express, there's even a Flux Capacitor that can be seen in there which would bring some strength to The Hero Boy and Conductor Time-Traveler Theory, and that brings up a lot of questions, plus more to the overall story.

This was based on a short picture book, so they had to stretch out the story for this movie, but they were faithful to the art of The Polar Express. That's probably why the train stopped so many times; the movie had to be at least 90 minutes. In the book, its a shorter ride haha! The animation isn't too bad...ish. I think this movie is fine, though I would love to see this again in a 3D IMAX theater. That would be an experience. In terms of Christmas movies for 2022, I would recommend A Christmas Story, Arthur Christmas, A Muppet Christmas Carol, and Elf.

This movie has an incredibly subtle detail. You’ll never notice if you put two and two together you see in the background is one shot in the movie you’ll see that the Polar express has a flux capacitor. The thing that makes time travel possible, and in the shot with the train is arriving at the kids house the clock stops. I just confirmed it the train is time traveling.

In a suburban neighborhood of Grand Rapids, Michigan, on the night of Christmas Eve in the late 1950s, a passenger train known as the Polar Express stops at the house of a boy who is growing skeptical about the existence of Santa Claus. The conductor says the train is traveling to the North Pole, and the boy, although reluctant at first, climbs aboard and meets a spirited girl and a know-it-all boy. The train then stops to pick up a boy named Billy, who initially declines to board, but changes his mind as the train is leaving. The boy applies the emergency brake in which it attracts the conductor, and Billy is allowed on, but he has to sit alone in the observation car. The children are then served hot chocolate by a platoon of dancing waiters, and the girl saves a cup for Billy. When the conductor and the girl go to give Billy his cup, the boy notices that the girl's ticket has not yet been validated and tries to return it to her. In doing so, the wind blows the ticket out into the wilderness, but it soon finds its way back to the train. After the girl discovers that her ticket is missing, the conductor leaves with her. Assuming that she will be thrown off the train, the boy finds the ticket and traverses the rooftops to find the girl. There, he encounters a mysterious ghostly hobo that helps him reach the engine. The boy finds that the girl has been put in charge while the engineer and fireman are replacing the engine's headlight. The boy applies the brakes before a herd of caribou blocks the tracks. As the train continues, it moves at an extreme speed due to the cotter pin shearing off. Once they reach a frozen lake, the cotter pin is replaced and the driver narrowly gets the train back onto the tracks as the ice breaks. The conductor takes the boy and girl back to their seats and they join Billy in the observation car. The train arrives at the North Pole, where the conductor announces that one of the children will be chosen to receive the first gift of Christmas from Santa himself. While the girl and boy attempt to convince Billy to join them, the boy accidentally uncouples the car, sending it hurtling along a route towards a railway turntable inside Santa's workshop. The children make their way through an elf command center and a gift-sorting office facility, where Billy finds a present in his name. They are dumped into a giant sack of presents, where they also find the know-it-all boy. After the sack is loaded onto Santa's sleigh, the elves escort them out before Santa and his reindeer arrive. A bell flies loose from the galloping reindeer's reins; the boy initially cannot hear it ring, until he finds it within himself to believe. He returns the bell to Santa, who selects him to receive the first gift of Christmas. Santa agrees to let him keep the bell. As the children board to go home, the boy discovers that he lost the bell through a hole in his pocket. The boy arrives home, and the conductor wishes him a Merry Christmas. He awakens on Christmas morning to find a present containing his lost bell with a note from Santa. He and his younger sister Sarah joyfully ring the bell, but their parents do not hear it because they do not believe in Santa. The boy reflects on his friends and sister eventually growing deaf to the bell over the years as their belief faded. However, despite the fact he is now an adult, the bell still rings for him, as it does "for all who truly believe."

I know I'm late, but I love how you commented on the music. Alan Silvestri is an amazing composer. He's done basically all of Robert Zemeckis's films, including the Back to the Future films and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Silvestri would also compose films in the MCU. Specifically, they are Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers (2012), Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Overall, I would consider Silvestri my favorite composer who isn't John Williams.

J'ai bien aimé ta réaction! I've always liked this movie's title because my father-in-law used to be the train engineer on the Polar Bear Express from Cochrane to Moosonee (on the James Bay coast) in northern Ontario. Unlike you, the first time I saw the animation, when the film first came out, I was quite impressed how real the people looked. Times change, animation improves, and yes, it does now look dated. But you will see when you get older that the things you find so great today will look very dated in the future.
