Jazz Journalists Association Awards 2012, 2011 & 2010 Trumpeter of the Year Nominee Tom Harrell talks about why standards are important in jazz, bringing popularity to jazz and creating bonds with an audience.
When I listen to jazz, I run the "tune" (a Standard) thru my brain while simultaneously hearing the new take the performer brings to the "tune." The excitement is discovering how incredibly fresh and interesting the improvisor can be! Even improving on the original "tune!" To get this I HAVE to know the tune! I have to know where the performer is in the tune.
