I remember watching Gugu (10+ years ago?)in one of my favourite shows, “Touch”. Her American accent was so perfect, it was years until I learned she wasn’t American 😅

Her name comes from her South African father but she was fully born and raised in England. I'm not sure how your name denotes where you're from, you're from wherever you were born. Your lineage is something separate.

@@TheFever77 No. What I mean is that I am from North America (Canada), but my surname is not commonly heard in North America. When people meet me, they expect me to be able to speak the language of the country my name is from. Surnames can be traced in history to originating from specific countries, and typically the population of people with those surnames is highest in those countries (or surrounding ones) unless driven away and repopulated elsewhere. Your name can tell you a lot about your history and culture. What I imply by my comment is that people make assumptions about my native language when they read my surname which obviously originates outside North America. The comment I responded to seemed to make that same assumption. But name prototypicality doesn’t equate language or country of origin, which is what I was implying. That aside, I was commenting on how Gugu’s American accent was so perfect I couldn’t believe she wasn’t a native speaker (born in the US and surrounded by the language).
