Root beer is a really difficult one because everyone has different tastes and there are a huge variety of "root beers" ranging from great to awful since the term isn't really well regulated. Most Americans also don't start drinking root beer raw, most Americans are introduced to root beer floats, a popular kids party drink that consists of root beer with vanilla ice cream. The ice cream has a really interesting interaction with root beer that takes out most of the bitter flavors and leaves a sweet and light taste.

True. I first tasted root beer when I was a kid (by accident) and thought there was cleaning fluid in the drink or something. I thought it was awful. However, recently I've got into root beer, and one of the reasons was I had a float and really enjoyed it. Bunderburg is one of the nicest ones I think.

Even in America, some people like root beer & some hate it. Also, I've heard it's the flavor of medicine or toothpaste or something in other countries, so I can see where it wouldn't taste like a beverage to them. I hate grape flavored things because the cold medicine when I was a kid was a syrupy grape flavor. It was gross. The only 'grape' thing I like is actual grapes.
