I had the honor of seeing Sir Tom Jones live about a year ago. At 82 (at the time), he was still flawless. All the power, all the grace, not a note out of place. This song brought the place down. His band was incredible too, one of the best concerts I've ever seen. What I really enjoyed was watching all the older people dancing in the aisles... they likely did the same when they were younger, and there was joy on every face. What a night! The reason he's holding the mic far away is because of the power of his voice. Singers of his caliber know when to move the mic farther away and when to bring it closer.

Tom Jones is a Welsh singer who has one of the smoothest powerful voices around. And he was a showman too, in fact he was a big heart-throb with the ladies. He has so many hits such as "I'll Never Fall In Love Again", "It's Not Unusual", "What's New Pussycat?", "Green, Green Grass of Home", "She's a Lady" etc. He covers a lot of genres. He is still performing & is a coach on "The Voice" UK version. He also had a variety show from 69 - 71 & had some of the biggest music stars at the time.

This is an original, not written by Tom Jones (I don't think he wrote any of his own songs). The writer also wrote the 'theme' song for my hometown football team, Leeds United, called Marching On Together. Written in the 70s and the crowd still sing it today.

I want to say back in the 70's on down most if not all were "live" performances straight off the studios sound console no editing just as it was done on stage. The 80's on down all is controlled with enhancing the vocals. I worked in audio sound staging and one can do magic on the console control systems.

Nice to see you back Bisscute and looking and sounding refreshed. My advice is slow down a little and don't over commit to doing so much almost every day online so that you don't burn out or get discouraged by overly critical trolls. Take some holidays away from your puter, even for just a few days to enjoy the real world. LOL A lot of people who hear Tom sing this song think that he must have been trained in Opera. But If I remember correctly he was a labourer who just loved to sing and is self taught. Just natural talent and abilities and I would say a gift from God. Even Pavoratti had trouble keeping up to him in their duet of Delilah. There are two songs that I highly doubt will ever be matched by any other singer in a live performance with no voice enhancements. This one and Unchained Melody by Bobby Hatfield on the Andy Williams show.

What a great reaction to Tom Jones, he was a close friend of Elvis and when Elvis was playing the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas and Tom was playing The Flamingo Hotel down the strip, they would always try to get together in Elvis's suite because Elvis couldn't go out being a major superstar, if you would like to see more of Tom Jones performing live in hi prime from the 1970's try "Tom Jones Hits Of Medley 1978 Warner Theater, Washington 4/14", this is classic Tom Jones moving the hip, the critic called him "The Tom Cat" when he came to town here in Milwaukee. ❤

I think your assessment of Tom's voice and the microphone is essentially correct. Watch Elvis live and you will see very similar technique being used. The technology at the time couldn't automatically adapt to more powerful singers meaning they had to hold it further away to avoid distortion and damage to the equipment (when opera singers are performing in an environment where microphones are used they are often on floor stands well out of arm's reach because they are used to projecting their voice to an entire auditorium/theatre - see Pavarotti). In that era weaker singers would be 'found out' because they had no choice but to have the mic much closer to their mouth. Tech has since moved on a lot so the internals can cope and adjust without the artist having to hold it further away.
@GroovingPict
@GroovingPict Месяц назад
His voice is definitely very powerful. For the song he did together with The Cardigans, I believe they originally wanted to record them singing together, like at the same time, but Tom's voice was just so much more powerful than that of the lead singer of The Cardigans that it didnt work: if they set the levels to match Tom's voice, you basically couldnt hear the female singer, and if they set the levels to her voice, Tom's voice just blew out everything. So they had to record it separately so that they could set the levels appropriate for each of their voices.

Yeah, Tom Jones. What's there to say about Tom Jones, other than he's Tom Jones. He's a Welsh singer that was a late stage crooner. Meaning that he came out in the 60s as the culture was changing, but he was still doing more of an older fashion crooner thing as it was basically dying out and being replaced by Rock N Roll, loved by the ladies, he had a few popular hits that are pretty beloved, and he's basically just stuck to still redoing the same thing ever since. Was kind of part of the nostalgic acts that used to play Las Vegas, kind of thing. Still around too, and not in bad shape for his age. I mean, he's Tom Jones! Kind of iconic, but also kind of a novelty. Some other of his most famous songs are "It's Not Unusual", "What's New Pussycat", and "She's A Lady".

Tom is also a great blues singer, which is the very basis of all modern music. You will actually have to look long and hard to find a better singer than Tom Jones! Trying to categorize him as a "crooner" is not at all accurate. If you only look at his late 60s and early 70s material alone he is just a basically colossal singer. You may not like him but take a step back and objectively analyze his voice and stage persona. He is as good as anyone. Period. And I am not a big fan, but greatness is greatness. 🤔👍

@UncleQue
@UncleQue Месяц назад
Yes he was pulling the microphone away because of the power of his voice. Or doing so could cause distortion and simply be too loud for the listener. A 70’s microphone would not be as advanced as a current one and was a common technique for people that like to really belt out a song.

The Tragic Truth by Five Finger Death Punch speaks to the internal struggle of the protagonist and the consequences of their own actions. The lyrics depict a person trapped in their own self-destructive patterns, seeking solace in alcohol and running away from the person they have become. The song confronts the idea of personal accountability and the realization that no one else is responsible for the choices they have made.

Back in those days, singers like Tom Jones weren't really heavily involved in the musical process. 1. You’re right. That song was originally by him. He has a real good voice and lots of fans. Some of which even flung their underwear at him. No lie. The only problem I have wit him though is all his songs had ghostwriters. If you don’t know what a ghostwriter is, that’s someone who writes a song for an artist witout that artist writing anything down in the song at all. Not a cowriter. There’s a big ass difference a ghostwriter and a cowriter. Unlike a ghostwriter, a cowriter, however, only writes some of the song whereas the artist of that song also does some of the writing as well. That was not how it went for Tom Jones or even Anne Murray though either, come to think of it. The reason why I, personally, have a problem wit whenever someone has a ghostwriter is cuz when an artist only has someone else write their music for them, it always seems like that artist is 0% sincere bout anything. It’s like the artist doesn’t truly feel, let alone mean anything he or she says in his or her song, you know? Although, I do see a possibility of a scenario where an artist speaks wit ghostwriters bout some personal moments that the artist had and those ghostwriters just plan on how to write down those moments perfectly. Idk. I know it’s a song and it gained a lot of fame and fortune but it always leaves me wondering shit, you know? 2. First time I ever heard that song was in 2016 and I only heard it, I think less than 10 times. 3. First song I ever heard by Tom Jones was actually What’s New, Pussycat? Second song was She’s A Lady. Both were either 2005 or 2006. 4. I heard that this song was sung by Homer Simpson in the shower after he got to leave church early.

I really like that you bring the classics to your channel, in those years there was no "neither trap nor cardboard", as they say colloquially, either you sang well or you could do something else, there were only those who were really worth it. In Spain, voices like Nino Bravo or Camilo Sesto stood out, and one of the most important voices in Spanish was that of the great Vicente Fernández, who died less than two years ago, one of the greatest idols of Mexico. I leave you a link to a video of him (the quality of it is not very good, but the quality of his voice... I hope to see your reaction). A big hug, here is the link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0peANtDLVdI.html (by the way, the song is short and the lyrics, if you know some Spanish, easy to understand)
