Landry was a brilliant, legendary coach!

Landry was not only a very brilliant, and innovative football coach, he was also passionate. He knew how to adjust and be creative on both offense and defense. Football was in his blood and in his veins.

Tom Landry coached the defense and the offense, no coach does that! truly legendary and he was literally 5 plays away from being the first coach to win 5 superbowls and having it be the Landry Trophy awarded to superbowl winners.

It was a terrific formation for Roger who loved it, and took to the shotgun like a duck to water. Interestingly, Aikman wanted no part of that formation, but he was no scrambler/runner like Staubach. Aikman was also exceptionally fast dropping back, which greatly helped defeat the rush. Two great QB's with divergent opinions about the formation.

Coach Landry was a strategic visionary who designed offenses + defenses light-years ahead of the competition!

I'm not even a Cowboys fan but you have to acknowledge greatness when you see it. If you dropped Staubach in his prime into today's game with the rules totally favoring the offense what kind of numbers would he put up?

LC, I don't know what your background is, but your research skills are off the charts as is your ability to summarize a ton of information both concisely AND completely. That's a dynamite combination. And understand, I lived most of this stuff since I started watching the cowboys when I was 7 back in '71, so I know what I'm talking about when I say you don't miss a thing. Alright, enough azz-kissing. But make no mistake, I appreciate the hell out of your work here.

Landry is one coach that can never be over rated. He was a football legend. The fans that don't recognize that are equivalent to the NBA fans that think LeBron is better than Bill Russell. Thank you for shining a new light on a greatness that should never be forgotten.

I always loved that shotgun formation back in the day. I think Staubach stood just a little further than Danny White, which may be why he had more low snaps than White. It was great for the QB to get a good view of the defense, and fewer steps to take back. Interestingly, Jimmy Johnson never used it in Dallas. But, it just goes to show how ahead of the times Landry was because nowadays every team not only uses it, but many teams have it as their base formation.

The team Jimmie and Jerry put together from 89-95 was brilliant but nothing compares to the Dallas Dynasty from 1966- 1985

Tom Landry and Vince Lambordi were both coaches on the (1958?) New York Giants Championship team. Both are in the Hall of Fame. WOW.

My high school coach used the shotgun in 1968 and we used to have a screen pass from it to me (the fullback) - it opened up the defense so we usually picked up a lot of yards.

It's a big secret, but I guess it's time to give it away. Landry and Bryant actually created the first version of AI to facilitate their drafts and come up with innovations on offense and defense. Yes world, ChatGBT owes its existence to America's Team.

R.I.P. Tom Landry. Landry was so BRILLIANT. Landry was so AHEAD OF HIS TIME, it took the NFL almost 30 years to catch up - and eventually surpass him!!! SIDE NOTE: 1974 was when I became a Cowboys fan!!! Thanksgiving day game "AFTER" Washington thought, if they knock Staubach out of the game (THEY DID), they would WIN (THEY DIDN'T)!!!

Since the early 1970's, the Cowboys are the standard all other teams aspire to be.

Landry and Lombardi got HC jobs at the same time. They exchanged playbooks, Lombardi stuck to Landry's Defense. Landry had a new team, so he scrapped Lombardi's offense and designed a new one.

I remember a game at Philadelphia in 1981, the year after the Eagles went to the Super Bowl, where Tom Landry completely outsmarted Dick Vermeil and his staff. Vermeil wasn't a slouch coach and the Eagles at that time were getting a lot of hype about getting home field for the playoffs. Landry and the Cowboys just made the Eagles coaches and players look completely incompetent.

Not a bad adjustment for someone considered a defensive genius with the flex D. I never did the homework but always thought the SG was the product of Staubach losing a step but I think it might have been an adjustment to faster defenses as well. This also makes me think of the success the 49ers had 10 yrs later with the 3,5,8 step drop timing passes they did. Both were developed for speed but opposite approaches. nIce upload.

My Dad was a Cowboys fan and quit watching them when they dumped Landry. His Cowboys were the class of the league, compared to later teams who were the asses of the league.

As far as the NFL teams go it was the Sf 49ers who invented the shotgun formation under head coach Red Hickey.QB John Brodie was the first under Coach Hickey to use it in a game.

Tom Landry was a great, great coach and a fine human being. And Jerry Jones treated him like he was a nobody.

But I recall the Cowboys using the shotgun a little in 1967.

Red Hickey didn't create the the Spread Shotgun offense. Leo "Dutch" Meyer did at TCU. Hickey got it from him. Landry did make some tweaks but it was still Dutch Meyer's offense

As old School Cowboys Fan, meaning my first game I watch was 1967 NFL Championship THE ICE BOWL. The First SuperBowl I watch 1970/71 SB5 /Colts Cowboys. I mention these 2 Games. Currently the NFL has Ranked them as 2 of the Greatest NFL games ever Played. IceBowl the coldest SB5 The hardest Hitting Game in NFL History. Many people don't know Tom Landry was a running Back for the NY Giants. Coached by Vince Lombardi. Later on Landry became a Player / Coach on the Gaints with Lombardi taking Landry under his wing. Having all this as a person that one day was going to be a Coach in the NFL. Having Lombardi as your Teacher I think we can all agree u can't get better than that. The player/Coach gives an added insight to Landrys innovative Play designs that 60+ yrs Later are still used today by many other teams. So Much for the Cowboy Haters! Your team not only used Landry designed plays its likely ur Team had a Cowboy coach or player ie Mike Dika 85 Bears as ur Coach. You said it perfectly when the Cowboys lost Landry went to the lab adjusting his own plays. till he perfected them. It's why I always Says the 2 greatest games the Cowboys ever played? Icebowl & SB5. Then in 71 SB5 Cowboys 1st SB against the world Champion Baltimore Colts with Coach Shula QB Johnny Unitis. A game where players started with Broken arms and Legs from the most Completive Season in NFL history today. Both QB's Knock out carried on Strechers. RB's head on Collision s that today would be a Felony no Turftoe was not a term then. Colt Linebacker Mike Curtis almost decapitated 2 player with 1 second left Cowboys winning , lost by a rookie kicker replacing the the 😅injured kicker. The Most Valuable Player not only went to a Defensive Player. But to the Defensive player of the losing Team LB#54 Chuck Holley. That's all you need to know why it was a war Zone on the Field. But those losses Made the Cowboys theirl begins to their real Dynasty .

Guys and girls, don't forget he created the 4/3 defense while with the Giants. Some variations of it today is still being used. I am glad he was the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys for twenty seasons.

Having watched the last game, the Cowboys were already eliminated by the Raiders game. They played a considerable number of backups in that game. (It was a night game, and apparently teams that needed to lose for Dallas to get into the playoffs had won.)
