I remember my kids in elementary school. They had friends who were Indian, Black, Hispanic and Asian. They all played together & they truly noticed no differences or did not care. I got to know parents of other kids bc of birthday parties & sports and they got to know me. Once they got to junior high, racial sensitivity classes and school movies about the differences of racial bias were taught. All Americans need to know our low points in history such as the slavery of African Americans, the wretched treatment of the Chinese who built our western railroads, etc. But once that differences began being pointed out by teachers, suddenly race made a difference about who and who were not hanging out together. Even hostility started to show. By high school kids had only one or 2 friends from different racial groups. It makes me wonder that if this was not given so much emphasis, would there be so much racial isolationism. Maybe they would have changed attitudes anyway as they aged, but it was sad to see. Division and mistrust developed. I wonder how long the unity, and the meaningless of skin color to the kids might have lasted. I also genuinely miss seeing the parents of some of these kids I really liked.I could see it happening, but I didn’t know how to stop the division or how to maintain friendships with other parents once my kids and theirs no longer did things together. In 6th grade they were all friends, by end of 7th grade it had all changed. Maybe it would have happened anyway, but the division began once my kids were told by teachers they are racists bc they are white even if they don’t think they are. Black and Chinese students were told they were victims of my children’s race and the previous 400 years of racism. But I am white and I am told by the media I can’t possibly understand bc I am a part of this conspiracy of systemic racism. How do I even respond to that? I miss the days when we were all just human parents watching our human kids play together.
