Here's Tom Petty's comment the day after Garry died: "I’ve known Garry for a long time. We go back to the mid-80’s. I just want people to remember what great work he gave us. The Larry Sanders Show just stands as some of the best TV work ever done. He was always quiet about his talent and just a really decent guy. We had a very strong friendship. We kept in touch all that time. You know, he’d come to our shows, and he’d hang out with us. I went to his house many times and he would come to my house. It was a comfortable friendship where if he came over I didn’t feel like I had to entertain him, and it was the same way back. He had an incredibly original talent, and as a man I can’t say enough about him. He was more than a showbiz acquaintance to me, he was a dear friend, and I will miss him."
They were great friends. And I feel honored they shared it with us. If only we could have friendships this great. I wish they had kept rolling. Garry was getting teary eyed, and that is part of all friendships. RIP to these two greats. Both departed at age 65. Both creative geniuses, ...still producing up until the end.
So hard for TP to be that candid -- I'm jewish and suddenly dropping in on friends when you know your time is limited -- I understand the prison of celebrity but I would do that. Funny reflective deeply painful to watch; I take a stand on breach of boundaries but it's ok to watch this and not rent the Bogdanovitch official bio video -- makes zero sense.
The great friendship between the two was great, I just watched Gary with Jerry Seinfeld and those two were really funny together. But I DO MISS BOTH OF THESE GREAT TALENTS MORE THAN ANYONE COULD KNOW. I felt SO BAD when both of them left us. All we can do is listen to you heir Music and all the great music legacy left to us, and watch all the great comedy by a genius unique comedian. Fortunately there is a sizable amount from both of these greatly missed talents! R.I.P. Gary Shandling and R.I.P. Tom Petty!
Bad faery at the party. I don't know what happened that day but Dana was hiding in the bedroom and Tom was the ultimate introvert it felt like a huge intrusion watching this. If it's real, Gary Schandling must have told him he was dying or something. This video should be removed but of course won't be because of the lack of boundaries on the part of fans who have now been termed as engaging in what is now officially parasocial relationships with people they will never meet often and now permanently dead. Were I Dana I would hide in the bedroom as well. !st time Warren Zane Tom's biographer met him outside his house he was in camo hiding in the bushes outside the restaurant. You people are clueless.
RIP Garry Shandling (November 29, 1949 - March 24, 2016), aged 66 And RIP Tom Petty (October 20, 1950 - October 2, 2017), aged 66 You both will be remembered as legends.
Just watched Tom Petty Documentary then watched some Larry Sanders which brought me to this. I remembered this and now watching it again how profound it is. Life is short everyone. Both were 66. Definitely too short for these two incredible talents. I laugh and it’s sad at the same time…
Exactly. I'm glad some can appreciate that. If it's to be, I'll be 70 in a couple months. 66 definately is too young, especially for talent like that. Kindred spirits I would say.
Who ever is responsible for posting this, THANK YOU. I've watched this several times now and each time I get more and more out of it. Thank you again...
Loved them both. Tom Petty was my favorite male rock singer. Loved his voice. Gary Shandling cracked me up like no other. God, he was funny. "This is good shit." LMAO!
Absolutely or if they did they would then be put in a corner and not talked to at said party……two incredibly talented humans of prose and artistry RIP gentlemen the world was better place with you in it!
"I'm just keeping my eye on that Neverland Ranch, if it ever goes up for sale. Because he's already done all the work"... Damn, that made me laugh. Miss both of them!
Until this very moment, I had no idea these two guys even knew each other. Each separately had amazingly profound insight into creativity. Mind blown! Thanks.
And this is really what RU-vid is about to me... this made my day worthwhile. An unvarnished conversation between two adult humans who have led extraordinary lives. Thanks for uploading.
Yep, just read an article too, where he basically said he'd never quit. He became vegetarian too, he said because of factory farming but I'd bet his Doc said something about it too. That said, Garry...a card carrying health fanatic who yet, was a stress-y dude. Nah...none of us know when...be good to yourself, stay cool and never forget to laugh and always, always watch re-runs of The Larry Sanders Show and listen to the GREAT Tom Petty.
I must say those are great prescriptions, especially laffs. all this talk of an intrusion, geez, regular folks even, are sometimes divided about having company. the wife may want to look her best. and they're shooting video. "the doors are open", as Mr. Petty says.
That is life in form. You collect all this precious stuff, vintage analog equipment. Great guitars and amps, and mixing boards. Then you pass on without it. This is not a sad thing, but to realize every most sacred, private, special thing of mine, will just be left, when I pass on.
Tom Petty is right when he talks about the quality and warmth of analog sound, and that's why all his records sound great. I even started collecting them, but only the original old edition, nothing new digitally remastered.
I always thought the same as what he said about the "warmth" of old records as opposed to a "coldness" with digital. I have almost every 45 and LP I owned since 1963. Nice to know someone like Tom thinks the same way but we are of the same generation. Miss him.
It is strange to be 63 and notice we think about these things and start to prepare for this. We are apart but still one with each other. Guess we will always be together one way or another.
Who would have ever thought these two would be close friends? It makes sense since they were both wonderfully talented and genuine people. Watching this makes me both happy and sad.
Shame on me, I didn't know Gary Passed away, I just found out about Tom a few hours ago...........SO SAD, I'm being Selfish of Course who's to know when and why the GREAT ONE'S go to Early in My opinion. Never Got to see Tom LIVE, I Thank GOD AND TOM For leaving us a PHENOMENAL BODY OF MUSIC BEHIND, Tom was such a GREAT ARTIST AS WELL AS A WONDERFUL HUMANITARIAN!!! R.I.P. TOM, YOU WILL BE SORELY MISSED...............................🎸❤💚❤
Tom is right about tubes. I have had a tube pre-amp for the last 20 years. When I was auditioning equipment in an audio store, I heard 2 or 3 solid state pre-amps and then when the guy hooked up the tube pre-amp, the difference in the warmth of the sound was immediately apparent.
I’ve owned a vintage Neve… And first off it’s a UK made (not German) discrete component transistor console with loads of transformers … not a single tube in them 😂
Garry Shandling Was one year older than Tom. Gary passed way in 2016 at 66 years old. Tom passed away in 2017 at 66 years old Three weeks shy of his 67th birthday. RIP.
I guess I never realized these two guys were "really" friends - makes sense as they seem to be of the same personality! Thanks guys for keeping us entertained all those years - rest in peace.
I was 17 when Damn the Torpedoes came out and Tom Petty's music really was the soundtrack to the best years of my life. I was lucky to have seen him at an outdoor show at Greatwoods in Massachusetts when the Black Crows were the opening act. That was easily the best concert I've ever seen. Then I saw him again in Hartford with Steve Winwood. I wish like hell I'd seen him 10 more times. I haven't changed my Sirius radio from the Tom Petty station since he passed. What a loss to the music world. Him and Malcom Young. Two of the best musicians ever.
The idea that Tom Petty second-guessed parts of his performances is both bewildering and comforting. I'll try to remember that the next time I'm beating myself up with woulda-coulda-shouldas.
I LOVE this! Just cried my eyes out having heard you have died today! Thank you peaky hat for our wonderful talks : you were so REAL & FUN . R.I.P you LEGEND 🌹💋❤️
OMG too funny - and so laid back! Both these guys are such excellent and talented entertainers in their own right. Thank you for sharing this gem! It's great that their memories will live on in audio and video. RIP Gary and Tom. You left us too young, and too soon-- but with these classics, you'll always keep rocking us!
@@designerlarry tx Larry. Dana would not come out of the bedroom or wherever she was and for me it did feel like an an intrusion; I don't revisit this video because ... finish the sentence. And yes to everything you wrote. Except there was a glimpse of his dog at the time I banish myself.
These could have been any two guys on any street corner in any city or state in America. Without knowing them, you could pass them on the street and never realize that you're looking at a comedy great in a rock and roll legend. RIP gentleman. Thanks for the tunes and the laughs.
I love Tom Petty. THere is a Tom Petty cover band here in Richmond, Virginia and so it's gotten me to listen to him again. What a poet! What a great musician. I miss him!
This video is good for my soul. When I'm feeling down I come here, both amazing men gone too soon. I remember watching The Gary Shandling Show on the tube TV in my moms bedroom cause it was the only room with AC when I was a kid. And Tom, well, been a fan since the first time I heard Free Fallin. Both gone way too soon.
I have watched several interviews of Tom Petty, some real good ones. But this chat with his pal Gary Shandling is the best thing I have found of Tom speaking. It's so real and interesting. Just Tom being Tom, at home with a friend. I've watched it about 7 times now. Soon to be 8.
Thanks for posting. Two great guys, showing what friendship and life is all about... And how short life is.... LA is really a small town sometimes... RIP Tom and Gary...
This is so interesting. The conversation they were having, Garry saying that we should tell people we love them as you never know, and Tom telling the story of how Garry stood looking out over the landscape and said 'It's the end of the world.' These kind of topics, philosophical questions, are usually discussed when you're at the end of your life, when you know you are ill. I didn't know much, if anything, about Garry Shandling, but I believe he sadly died not that long after this. It's as if somewhere in our subconscious, we 'know' we're at that point. He seemed a lovely guy. I'm glad they filmed this, I'm sure Tom will treasure it.
Gary Shandling lived almost another 20 years after this was recorded, so I doubt he was anticipating his demise any more than anyone does throughout their life. If you listen to the context and the way it was said, it wasn't a reference to one's death anyway. "Said as an observer, from the outside."
This was filmed in 2006 (released in 2007) and Shandling died in 2016. He had another 10 years to go and Petty had 11 1/2 years to go. I hope they loved their last decade.
@@globalmonkey007 Thank you for that. I was curious as to how soon they each passed after this was recorded. Garry looks so hale and hearty here, while Tom looks washed out. Tom still smoked, which probably contributed to his funereal pallor. I couldn't tell what Garry was drinking. Perhaps club soda? If it was a sugared drink, then it wasn't good for him.
LUCKY said he was LUCKY !!! loved tom petty's music you liked one song you pretty much liked them all i wont back down running down a dream list goes on GARRY i used to watch the larry sanders show all the time garry and rip torn the shame about it all is pretty much all the good ones are gone people like TOM and GARRY are missed in this day and time!!
I have never seen this before, or even knew about Garry's interviewing show. Or whatever this is. But... WOW. This is amazing. I was a kid when I accidentally discovered the Garry Shandling show and the quirky humor. I was bummed when it ended, and didn't like the Sanders show as much but I didn't know anyone else who was into his humor as much as I was. I was also raised on LOTS of Tom Petty from my dad. So seeing this... Wow. what an awesome and hilarious pairing.
