M P Was a fan all my life and saw him perform at Hyde Park, London only a month before he died. So thankful I got to see him. Prince too but many years ago. R.I.P. Prince and Tom Petty. Both absolute legends! 🙏🙏❤️❤️
@@Samurai_Stoner Yep, Bowie and Prince hit me harder than Petty... still can't listen to Prince hardly at all, and hearing Bowie makes me appreciate him way more than I ever did before. When I was a kid his Iggy Stardust days weirded me out, I was too young to process it.
This is an iconic 80s video. We all anticipated seeing the MTV video debut of the song we'd been jamming to on the radio. Mr Petty never disappointed with his unique creative style.
Fun Tom Petty fact. Back in 1963 or 1962 Elvis Presley was filming a movie in Ocala Florida called Follow that dream. A 10 year old boy asked his parents to go to the movie set to see Elvis. They couldn't take him, so his uncle did. Among all the crowd he got close enough to actually meet his hero Elvis and even got his guitar signed. It was then he knew he wanted to become a musician when he grew up. That little boy was Tom Petty.
Fun facts: Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics makes a cameo as the man smoking the hookah. Also at the end when they are eating her as a cake, Tipper Gore criticised this video in corrupting the youth by showing cannibalism but totally missed the drugs references....lol
Miss Tom Petty so much. He was one of the rockers who really embraced the video music craze in the 80s, and came up with really creative stuff. I think he studied theater arts in college, so he got to combine acting and music. He always looked like he was having a great time.
Tom Petty was one of my biggest rock n roll heroes, and losing him still hurts. A man of true personal integrity. "I Won't Back Down" personifies the rebel that he was
I’ve been a huge fan since I was a kid. I got to see him for the first time in 2012 (he hadn’t played in Ireland since 1991) and swore I wouldn’t miss the next time. He never played Ireland again. 😢
Yeah, iirc, he wrote that song about his legal battle with the band’s record label. They’d signed the contract when they were young guys, thinking that “publishing rights” meant the label had the rights to any printed sheet music (which they didn’t care about), and not the total legal ownership of the songs and recordings that it meant.
David Reynolds Don’t be sad that you only experienced it once. Be glad you actually got to see him. A lot of folks lament the fact they’ll never see TP&tH live. What other band can play a 3 hour set, with only 5 songs from the new album, the rest classic hits, and they still don’t have the time to play all their hits in those 3 hours? Think of yourself as lucky, you’re Irish, right? I myself had the luck to sit front row on the launch of their 2010 Mojo album tour at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado (the best outdoor concert venue in the world) with Joe Cocker as the opener. It was a magical night I’ll always treasure.
Daniel Cody Yeah. I was lucky to see him at all. The following year I got to see Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band. Probably the only other person who could do 3 hours and leave out loads of hits. Red Rocks. Now that does sound amazing.
Tom Petty has so many great songs!! Besides the ones I see others recommending, I'll also throw in: Don't Do Me Like That Breakdown American Girl Refugee You Got Lucky
Apparently there was such a good reaction to this video that when the gang went on tour, Tom would say "All right everyone, we're going back to the land of Alice now..." and would wear his top hat when playing this song.
My absolute favorite songwriter. I cried lot when he died. My family has home movies of me dancing to last chance when I was like 2 or 3, he's always been my favorite.
According to Tom Petty's book, Stewart & Petty wrote the song for Stevie Nicks. She and Stewart were in the middle of a marathon studio session when Tom Petty showed up for a visit in the middle of the night. Nicks left to get some sleep. When she returned in daylight, Petty, still there with Stewart, had laid down a vocal as a demo. When Nicks heard it, she loved it and told them "it's your song now."
Tom Petty is one of those musicians that can't possibly please everyone at a concert. So many great songs he would have to do 20 hour shows to make sure everyone heard their favorite song by him.
Huge backstory to this song Stevie Nicks was dating Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh and they were having a not great break up and Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics ended up writing a song about it Stevie said the line don’t come around here no more
Apparently Dave was invited to a party at Stevie Nicks' house and while everyone else was doing coke in the bathroom, he went upstairs to sleep. Woke up with Nicks trying on Victorian era dresses, fell back asleep, and woke up again to her and Joe Walsh having their argument. I've been waiting a long time for this video. It scared the crap out of me as a kid!
One of the coolest most emotional things I've experienced related to Tom Petty was being he's from Gainesville Florida, shortly after his passing being at a university of Florida game where 90 thousand Gator fans singing Won't back down in his honor. It was so awesome seeing everyone singing and swaying to a local legends music. So nice.
This is my favorite Tom Petty video! Please do Mary Jane's Last Dance and Into the Great Wide Open! And really, anything by Tom and the Heartbreakers! Seriously, ANYTHING!
I saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers 3 times and this so g is always a favorite. Tom is great in these videos. Such an amazing 👏 talent. You are missed Tom, so much. RIP
"I don't feel you any more. You darken my door." Those are some of the blackest lyrics I've heard. Imagine someone telling you that at the end of a relationship. I'd rather have a girl tell me to go eff off than hear her say those words, knowing that I affected her in that way.
Thank you my friend. I love the late and great Tom Petty. I'm glad you did a few of his different ones from a bunch of different years. Again thanks for making us smile.
Jamel, the Tom Petty songs you have reacted to, while very good, represent an era of the Heart breakers that were heavily influenced by Dave Stewart, of The Eurythmics, and Jeff Lynne of ELO. If you want the classic TP & Heart breakers try American Girl, The Waiting, Breakdown, Don't Do Me Like That , A Woman In Love, Refugee. If i were to point to the quintessential Heart breakers sound - try "The Waiting"
All his music played a part in my growing up. These were the songs that paved my life and still do. My me a stronger person. Tom love you, thank you, you are missed greatly.
Mtv was still relatively new when Michael Jackson made the video for "Thriller" which was basically a mini movie. So it was like he threw down the gauntlet and many people tried to make a better video than "Thriller". It didn't happen but we got a lot of great videos like this one.
I just found you and binged watch for hours! It is so rare to see someone enjoying music so much and the look of sincere happiness and wander on your face put a smile on mine. Thank you, kind Sir
This song was a collaboration of Tom Petty and David Stewart of the Eurythmics. the characters in the video are from Alice in wonderland with David Stewart playing the Caterpillar and Tom Petty playing the Mad Hatter. The female vocalist you hear singing in the background is Annie Lennox of the Eurythmics.
Yes! Love Tom Petty. Thanks for finally reviewing him. This song is unlike any other he ever did. The heartbreakers had no idea what he was thinking with this one. It turned out to be one of their biggest hits, more TP [ Please.
This is my favorite music video of all time. God, I cannot believe that I will never get to see Tom Petty anymore at the Hollywood Bowl. 😭😭😭 RIP TOM PETTY AND THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT MUSIC. 💔💔💔💔 Heartbroken. This is the coolest brake up song ever. "You tangle my emotions." What a cool lyric.

They started out making this song for Stevie Nicks. It’s based on something one of the writers heard Stevie Nicks tell Joe Walsh when she was throwing him out of their house (don’t come around here no more!) Nicks left while they were working on it and Petty helped create a track that drew its inspiration from Prince’s When Doves Cry (this track) and he recorded a guide vocal track for Nicks to re-record. When Nicks got back and she heard the track she said how do you expect me to top that? She thanked Tom and the other writer for their hard work, immediately fired Jimmy Iovine, and left. Tom inherited the song and built upon it for a few weeks with the intention of making it a single. When the track was brought to the record label they were understandably skeptical because it seemed so far removed from Petty’s other music but Tom used the When Doves Cry example in order to convince them that it would be a big hit and fortunately he was right. It charted at number 13 on the billboard hot 100 and number 2 on the rock albums chart. Tom Petty, the subtle genius who doesn’t get the credit he deserves. Also, that’s Annie Lennox singing the backup vocals.
I think this is my favorite Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers song. I love everything about and the video is awesome, too :) The music is really good, I love listening to all the different parts. The video is Alice in Wonderland. Tom's the Mad Hatter ;)
Mine too. As a kid this was one of the first music videos I had ever seen. The first one I remember seeing is Grateful Dead Touch of Grey. At the time my parents were doing their best to shelter us so unless it was music they liked everything was "devil music" 🤣 one day I called my mom out when she was listening to Mary Jane's Last Dance and said "mom, this is about marijuana" and the she lightened up on our music choices a bit.
