Kim Basinger (the actress playing the corpse of Tom’s affections in this video) said that she had a lot of fun on this shoot! She said that Tom was really a very shy man, which was fine by her because she was also fairly shy herself. They broke down giggling more times than either could count and she said he was incredibly sweet to work with. That made me happy.

In 2017, I was living in NOLA and I got to go to JazzFest where Tom Petty was the headliner that year. I will never forget that concert - he sang ALL his classics, despite already not looking great. Four months later he was dead. The one thing I took away from that day was a field full of strangers, including myself, all singing this song with him in perfect unison. It was magical.

The opioids did him in, not unlike Prince. Tom and Prince both suffered hip/leg injuries from jumping around on a hard stage all those years. It was Pain that ultimately killed them. They took the opioids to deal with the chronic pain. Suffering from chronic pain myself, I can understand. Also, Mary Jane is a wonderful alternative to opioids and other pain killers. I’m almost 63 and smoking weed every day because my back surgery is about six months away. So, dealing with it all. People negate the emotional impact that chronic pain has on the mind. Love to all!

Everyone talks about how they got to go to Tom Petty concerts and I never got to enjoy him while he was around. I started listening to him a few years ago and I instantly fell in love with him. He died when I was in the 2nd grade. I knew him then just barely knew his songs. I think the only one I knew was running down a dream. I would have loved to meet him in real life. He probably would have been one of the best men I would've met in my life. He's seriously a legend who didn't deserve to die yet. Why did he have to overdose on drugs like that? He should have let himself heal first before just deciding to take tons of painkillers like that. He has a second option and just said no. I guess it's just the Lord's plan. I will never be the same now knowing he's just gone like that. He was one of the best actors and singers ever known to mankind. Tell me what's your favorite movie with Tom in it and your favorite song from this band? I like the postman and my favorite song is probably I won't back down, this is probably my second favorite. Honestly though I won't back down is really the only song I can think of that I like a whole bunch. But I love a lot of songs from this band❤❤❤❤❤

Since I was a child I listened to Tom, My dad had all of his albums... I am crying right now, he is a part of my childhood. His sound, his lyrics, the songs were spectacular. He really was the last DJ. We'll never see anyone like him anymore. I listen to a lot of music. He is unique, and I say this only to few musicians, such as Joe Jackson or Frank Zappa. He was a legend of Rock. He surely has written the history of music. We all miss you Tom. We'll met in the great wide open, someday, maybe...

Ho Lee Phuk I know, I was two years old when The last Dj was released. I love the sound of that album. Then I grew up and I understood a lot more the meaning of the album. A critic to the record industry that was becoming an horrible being without a soul, only moved by money (in fact another song of that album is called "money becomes king")

The type that didn't need a man and could raise 3 kids on her own.. A good mother and her two smart and wise daughters live on as proof.. That's why it hurts so bad that some dude clipped her and her/his son then himself... She didn't need him!!!! I've known this girl for 30 years and when I was with her, She had her own EVERYTHING and was so independent. Tom Petty songs make these memories so vivid and close.. I really dated a beautiful blonde chick from Indiana who moved to my town (in New England) at the age of 18, we met shortly after and dated for one insane year (1999; still the craziest year of my life so far, and I've had some crazy years!). She loved to party and that's what we did... too much! We eventually broke up and she really took awhile for me to get over and in some ways I kinda never did completely, I just accepted it and moved on...I guess she's like, the one that got away. Well, she sadly passed away suddenly some years later (age 34). So yeah, this song and video always make me think of her... Though her name was not Mary Jane. We did see Tom Petty live together (great show!) and a ton of other bands, Neil Young, Black Sabbath, Allman Bros come to mind. More than anything though, I still remember the feeling I had seeing her and being with her...especially the first handful of times we hung out, wondering how this was happening.... it was like nothing else. Awesome and sad memories... bittersweet in a way. Such is life. Enjoy it all now, folks.

He deserves an Oscar for making this beautiful song. My favorite part in this is he dances with the dead woman corpse. Next time I want to clean the dead corpse body, sow the wounds, and do the same thing. I am in the bathroom right now and I showed it to my mom and she likes it. Heard the back story on this tune today: record producer heard the riff between two songs and told TP to go develop that in to a song. Just one riff tying two songs together and this was the result. Boom! Genius!

I told my therapist I’m willing to give up weed in exchange for a psych eval and more treatment because I KNOW I can’t do it on my own, I’ve tried, and I’ve been thinking about this song a lot lately and getting choked up. Mj has been a good friend to me but I think it’s time to go. I’m tired of myself.

This time in 1994 this heartbreaking classic arrived for the music world to hear. Mary Jane may have had her last dance but certainly not Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers! They kept going instead! Any video with Kim Basinger will always be everlasting!

Try to understand that there will never ever be a song writer and performer like Tom Petty again. Those of us born in da 60s/70s will probably only ever understand his talent at telling a story. I teach my kids and grandkids these days. Just a Fkn pity he struggled with drugs. Tormented I guess. 🙏
