Tom Selleck - First TV Commercial 

My mom had the biggest crush on Tom Selleck. She was always so excited when she found out he was on a new show or movie. Mom was about 75 when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. My sister and her husband lived in Idaho and they moved her in with them for the last 6 months of her life. Sometimes she wouldn’t know who my sister and her husband were, but she always remembered Tom Selleck. They bought the DVDs of all seasons of Magnum, P.I. to watch during the day, then switched over to Blue Bloods on TV at night. She was content doing that until the day she died. I want to thank everyone for your thoughtful comments, which are truly appreciated. I had no idea so many would react to Mom’s story. I know many who have developed dementia or Alzheimer’s have had positive reactions to music, but I had no idea showing a favorite actor would produce such a wonderful result like it did with Mom. Again, thank you very much!

The person who cast this thing really knew talent.

Even when Tom Selleck was a ‘pretty boy’ he still looked manly. One of the most handsome actors to ever grace the big or little screen.

He looks so handsome in this commercial, it's very weird to see him in this ad without his iconic mustache.

That's a magical bar of soap, sending nearly all of them into fame and fortune.

This is the first time I've ever seen Tom without that 'stache! I guess he wasn't born with it!

I first saw Tom Selleck in the movie”Coma” It was a very small part but he really stood out! I thought he was the best looking man I’d ever seen.Still do.

He was gorgeous then and still gorgeous now..

Teri Garr is the blonde towards the end who says, "He smells just the way a man should smell...clean."

I used to wait tables at the Hamburger Hamlet on Sunset Blvd in the 1970’s. Tom Selleck used to come to eat lunch after visiting his agent nearby. He was not yet famous but doing commercials and very impressive. I always looked at him and thought, “ Why isn’t this guy a HUGE star already?”

No doubt about it, Tom was the sexiest! I'm 70 and still watch the Magnum PI reruns! Hard to think how old we are now, but our minds are still young! Lol

Wow, so many future stars: Tom Selleck, Terri Garr, Penny Marshall and Patty Deutsche.

Oh my heavens... Tom was definitely out of this world, even in a commercial in the early 70s. I can't believe how young Penny, Patti and Teri were in this (long before they shot to fame themselves). What an ensemble cast that went on big things later on.

He has been beautiful his entire life.❤️

What a hoot to see Patti Deutsch again. We were at Carnegie Mellon together about a hundred years ago.

When Tom just used Safeguard, he was clean. When he grew the 'stache, he was Legend.

My favorite night of the week as a teen was Thursday, for its TV lineup: Magnum PI, Simon & Simon, and Hill Street Blues.

Y grandmother was so much in love with Tom sellick that when ever she heard the theme to Magnum P.I she would say “My Tommy is on” she would shuffle quickly to the living room just to watch the end of the song until he made his eyebrows go up and down and she would sigh with delight and sit down to watch the show and I agree he is still handsome now as he was back then my boyfriend reminds me of him and is as handsome and beautiful as he is

And he's still drop-dead gorgeous! So to speak.

I was a teenager when I fell in with Tom, as soon as I saw this commercial! It was great to find out later that he is modest and has a good sense of humor about himself.

My mom has always loved (and still drools over) Tom Selleck lol. I myself was never a fan of mustaches but Tommy always got a pass from me - he actually still looked pretty handsome imo, mustache or sans mustache. Edit: Ok ok I admit it…the guy is drop dead gorgeous! Always has been and always will be! He can pick me up in the Ferrari anytime 😉

When he played on 1990s episodes of friends dating Monica he looked better than 1981 Magnum. The man got more handsome as he aged.

It's funny - Tom said in an interview that his brother was the good looking one in the family - Lol. But can you imagine waking in the morning looking like this!? You own the world!

I always thought Tom Selleck was handsome but that was the Magnum P.I. version until the present. This man was unbelieveablely gorgeous (even better looking without his mustache) earlier in his career but I was much too young to apprieciate it.

I actually worked as the editor on this spot. Boy, this brings back memories. Jackie was great and very creative.

What a cool story! I must admit, he was quite the looker when he was young.

I grew up watching Tom , Teri and Penny. Just seeing this commercial again as I am now 43 makes me feel refreshed of my youth.

It's interesting how he walks through people as if to say "I'm Tom Selleck. You move for ME. I don't walk around anybody. You move for ME!"

This is an amazing commercial. This was when commercials were like movies. Cinematic and mesmerizing. This would have had me really believe that an office Job like what Tom has here, was real and an ideal place to be in.

Wow, I remember "Safeguard" soap commercials. We were strictly "Ivory" soap family. Handsoap do not last as long as they use too and they're more sudsy than I ever remember. Wow, remember when soap lasted a long time? Good commercial - several scenes that lead nicely into each other, rather than the fast past ones "now a days". Yup, I am now officially an "older person", "elderly", etc...😄😊💖

He also starred in a couple of Rockford Files episodes around this time. He played a perfect private eye that Rockford cannot stand.

Ha ha thanks! Swede here, I was born in the late 70's so I grew up with Magnum PI on tv in the 80's here in Sweden. Good memories! I think I liked the character Higgins the most (RIP John Hillerman), he had to put up with all of Magnum's crazy antics! I still remember him rolling his eyes at Magnum.🙄😂

I first took note of Tom Selleck in a Caress soap commercial, probably sometime after this because he had the mustache in it. I was particularly impressed by his movie star good looks and thought he should be making movies. The next time I saw him was in an episode of Taxi, and immediately recognized him from the soap commercial, thinking, "Good. He's on his way." Exceptional good looks and great acting talent, without any hint of the usual movie star vanity -- a most humble and gracious man.

I've never seen a TV commercial that had so many future stars! Tom Selleck, Penny Marshall, Teri Garr, Patti Deutsch....all who are missing are Jaclyn Smith and Farrah Fawcett.

I love the slow pacing of the '70s, and even '80s, commercials. The narrator's voices are so great too. In addition to commercials, there are two TV show intros that I love. I watch them every once in a while on RU-vid. One is the intro and theme music to The Mary Tyler Moore Show. The other is the intro to the "NBC Sunday Mystery Movie" show. I remember being a little tike, after my bath, in my pajamas with feet, sitting on the sofa with a bowl of popcorn with my little sister and mom watching it.

My brother used to look just like Tom Selleck when they were both young. It was good to see this old commercial again.

Such simple and dare I say better times. We've lost so many stars from when I was a kid in the 70s and 80s. Nice to look back and see these commercials now. Back then Id run to do anything but watch a commercial lol. Now I sit on RU-vid and watch them.. Funny how you never think about behind the scenes. Like that suit story. Who would have thought the actor in a commercial would need his wardrobe suit in real life back then.?? :)

The awesome one I remember is this great dressed handsome guy, white cowboy Stetson hat on, get into this hot car, and drives away, It was a commercial for Stetson Cologne, featuring Tom Selleck, I almost fell off my chair when I first saw that commercial!!! I think it came before Magumn PI series started. Oooh La La! What a hunk. Been a fan ever since..
