Tom Smothers, a comedian and musician who became famous in the 1960s as one half of the legendary Smothers Brothers performance pair, has passed away, according to a statement released by his brother. T. Smothers was a member of the Smothers Brothers. Aged 86, Smothers was.
"Tom was not only the loving older brother that everyone would want in their life, but he was a one-of-a-kind creative partner," Dick Smothers said in a statement regarding Tom's passing that was released by the National Comedy Center on Wednesday. Being able to spend a lifetime with him, both on and off stage, for more than sixty years is something for which I will be eternally thankful. The more time we spent together, the more we liked and respected one another. Our connection was similar to that of a healthy marriage for this reason. Without a doubt, we were blessed. The tagline "Mom always liked you best!" grew popular among Tom Smothers, and it was also the title of the album that the brothers released in 1966. Before putting their irreverence and exquisite timing to use in the service of their own network variety show, they were a big nightclub act and frequently appeared as guest stars on late-night television shows.
In 1967, CBS had first hired the brothers to create a variety show for the Sunday night slot opposite NBC's "Bonanza," which was the highest-rated show on television at the time. According to the book "Dangerously Funny: The Uncensored Story of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" written by David Bianculli, a television critic, network management made a guarantee to Tom Smothers that he would have "creative control," but the phrase was never included in a contract.
There were several weeks in which "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" attracted more viewers than "Bonanza," indicating that it was a ratings triumph from the very beginning. Rock groups such as the Who and Jefferson Airplane, as well as established talents such as jazz vocalist Mel Torme and belter Kate Smith, were featured on the show as part of its formula, which was aimed to attract viewers from all generations. In segments that were not related to music, notable figures from the entertainment industry such as Jack Benny and George Burns were featured with up-and-coming comedians like David Steinberg and Steve Martin. Pat Paulsen, a master of dry wit, presented droll, double-talk articles on social issues prior to mounting a presidential campaign in 1968 with the Straight Talkin' American Government (STAG) Party. Paulsen was a master of dry wit. David Frye had an impression of President Lyndon B. Johnson marrying off his "semi-beautiful daughters." He did this impression as part of his impersonation.
Tom Smothers, who self-identified as a liberal, was the driving force behind the program's creative endeavors and a significant contributor to the political humor that it included. On camera, Dick played the role of the arrogant "straight man," while Tom was portrayed as a well-meaning idiot. Tom's brother was irritated by his absurd remarks and his inability to remain focused on the matter at hand.

This is horrific - with a loss at the level of Tommy Smothers, we have an AI voice with no feeling at all narrating this obituary. God help us - humanity is sinking into the abyss... actually, I think we're there already...

I second that dismay and sense of inappropriateness at employing AI to dribble out a substandard simulcrum of human feeling when what's called for is a heartfelt testimonial/tribute by someone who cared. 😢💔🤯😒🤜🏼💥🤖

"No feeling at all narrating this obituary." What was the narrator supposed to do, LAUGH? CRY? Maybe a little of both with some ANGER thrown in? Mom and Dad never gave you enough attention?! Rest in eternal peace, Tom Smothers. Gone but not forgotten.

About 25 years ago, I stopped in at the Smothers Brothers winery in Kenwood, Ca. When I went into the tasting room, both Tom and his wife Marcy were conducting tastings. After about 15 minutes, I walked up to the counter and tried some of their wines, which were actually pretty good. I then spoke with Tom and told him that I was a bit of a Yo-Yo guy myself, having entered into competitions back in the early 70's. With that said, Tom went and grabbed two of his Duncan Yo-Yo's, and we went outside and started to show off to each other. The next thing I know, some of the visitors were watching us. We did this for about 10 minutes or so, but I have to admit that Tom is an absolute master of the Yo-Yo.... It was a lot of fun, and then he invited me to join him for a glass of wine, and we talked about music, and of course guitars, as I used to play... It was a very memorable experience....

I caught the Smothers Brothers act the first time in the sixth grade with Tommy yelling, "Quack, quack, quack!" I have been a fan of Tommy and Dickie (Super Sibling Dickie) and their work ever since. Both were/are incredibly talented on SO many levels. My brother and I often giggle about "Cream of Asparakeet." And I have been very fond of singing, "Since My Canary Died" and "The Ballad of Herman and Sally!" My heart is broken.

Mel "Torm"??? Seriously? There's absolutely nothing to cry about in this video, other than the lifeless bot going on. The Smothers Brothers brought life to so many, so, how utterly ironic is it that this lifeless video tries to highlight their time. I grew up in the sixties. Tom and Dick were always a part of my life. Welcome to the modern age of dishonor.
