So glad you enjoyed this one. Tom Tom Club has a special place in music history. Side project of Tina Weymouth (bass, vocal, synth) and Chris Frantz (drums) from Talking Heads, also married. They listed all their musical genius influences. One of the most sampled 80s's song in history.

Yeah this was 1981. One of the first to sample it (that same year) was Grandmaster Flash, where among he goofed them by changing "who needs to think when your feet just goes" to "who needs the band when the beat just goes"

This song is "the" original version. The Tom-Tom Club was a short-lived spinoff group of the Talking Heads. The song peaked at the #1 spot on the Billboard Dance chart. It also peaked at the #2 spot on the Billboard Soul chart and it peaked at the #31 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart as well during the early winter of 1982. This song was their one and only r&b crossover hit to peaked on three different Billboard charts. One more thing. The Tom-Tom Club and the group Blondie were the first white artists to released hip-hop songs on the Billboard Top 40 charts in the early 1980s.

There is a mistake in the lyrics posted in this video - it should read "Bohannon" and NOT "behind" - giving praise to Hamilton Bohannon who was influential during the 70s and 80s. Also, there were quite a few who initially didn't warm to the sampling of this song by Carey - at the time, sampling was quite the controversy stirrer. Eventually there had to be a limit as to how many bars could be sampled and still be considered a "semi" original work - sharing the writing cred with the original composer of the original sampled piece.

Tom-tom club was a band formed by a husband and wife who are part of the Talking Heads. Their names were Chris Franz and Tina Weymouth. She plays bass and sings, and Chris France played the drums. This album sold more copies than any single album by the Talking Heads.

Thanks to "Genius Of Love," it went Gold, outselling not only the Byrne/Eno album, but ANY Talking Heads album released TO THAT POINT in other words 1981. The writers and performers and members of Tom TOM club were also MEMBERS of the TALKING HEADS who made the album "STOP MAKING NOISE" which was NOT RELEASED BY The Talking Heads UNTIL 1984...three years LATER....so up until that point TOM TOM CLUB and Genius of LOVE in particular was a side project band created by Tina Weymouth, and Chris Frantz (while Talking Heads was on hiatus to allow David Byrne to do a solo career) that DID out sell, and out perform the Talking Heads up until 1984. SO, if you are comparing (David Byrne ONLY sold 30,000 solo albums in his entire solo career as of 2023, whereas Tom Tom Club sold 1,010,000 albums career long as of 2023.) The Talking Heads disbanded in 1991 when David Byrne without discussing it with the rest of the band, just quit. Frankly, a jealous, narcissistic twat who was mad he wasn't given ALL the credit. And Frankly, Tina, and Chris are both more talented than him. They created a single that is THE MOST SAMPLED SONG IN HISTORY!!!!, and why would it matter? DAVID, TINA, AND CHRIS WERE ALL MEMBERS OF THE SAME BAND (THE TALKING HEADS) UNTIL 1991. and yes throughout its lifetime THE TALKING HEADS did sell 9,212,500 albums which DID out sell The Tom Tom Club BUT it was a side gig of 2 of the members of The Talking Heads who out sold the side gig of their band mate David Byrne in ANY of his solo career so Tina and Chris did better....PERIOD.

This came out when I was 12. And yes, it was the original. It didn’t take long at all before there were rap groups doing their own thing over that music. My understanding was that they didn’t sample it at first, they actually recreated the song with instruments. I Remember walking around my neighborhood with my boombox blasting this and the clone versions, like “it’s nasty” by grandmaster flash. I’d walk outside, crank it up, and all the girls on the street would be following me dancing. I was like the early hip hop pied piped, lol. It was a lot of fun. I was the only kid in my white neighborhood who was into early rap, etc. I’m sure that some of the parents watching us walking down the street dancing thought “there goes the neighborhood!” Lol I converted all the kids, or at least helped broaden their musical tastes.

Tina Weymouth is my all time favorite female ROCK STAR. She and her husband Drummer Chris Franz led Tom Tom Club, usually during a break at Talking Heads shows, and at their own gigs. Got to see Talking Heads about a month before they filmed their concert for "Stop Making Sense", so I saw basically the same show, and they did this song, and the crowd was losing their minds. Also got to see a couple of the other folks mentioned in the song, George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic, with William "Bootsy" Collins in Central Park, NYC in 1996, and Mr. James Brown "The Godfather of Soul & Funk", a couple of times. James busted out a cape during his first song, we were taking bets ass to when he would, plus about five more during the SHOW.

Yes, guys this is the original artists 1981 is when this came out from two former band members of the Talking Heads the bass player a female sings this song and her partner a male male don’t know their names. I forgot. Hope this helps but yes, Mariah Carey took a sample of this tune, but this tune was made in 1981. I believe Mariah Carey wasn’t even born yet.

The 80’s was the sound, funk took over. Bernie Worrell was instrumental in making this song. Talking Heads toured with Bernie, Nona Hendrix, Skip McDonald and Doug Winbush. Mos Def used these guys on his monumental album. Sampled over 200 times, Tina & Chris made this song for Tina’s sisters, who knew.

Mariah Carey loved this song and indeed sampled it in her 1995 hit "Fantasy." One of the biggest hits of 2022 was Latto's "Big Energy" which also used this song (and I think I heard that she was not aware of the original song and sampled "Fantasy" so a sample of a sample).

Yes, this is an early 80s jam. This was an offshoot of the Talking Heads group. Since they mentioned Sly and Robbie, you should check out some of their music with Black Uhura like "Sponji Reggae" or "Guess Who's coming to Dinner".

3:38 is Bohannon, NOT BEHIND. Hamilton Bohannon was a musical arranger for Motown in the 60's; dude's a giant. He went it alone in the early 70's, and guaranteed, that's the Bohannon era they reference in the tune. Come on Asia and BJ, duty calls.

There is a good RU-vid video combining TomTomClub, Maria Carey’s version and the newer Latto (Big Energy) version. The cover/sample versions were great but nothing touches the original.
