The song is one of the most sampled rhythm tracks of the 1980s, particularly within the hip hop and R&B genre. Notable versions include Dr. Jeckyl & Mr. Hyde's "Genius Rap" in 1981; Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five's "It's Nasty" in 1982; Mariah Carey's "Fantasy" in 1995, and The X-Ecutioners' "Genius of Love 2002" in 2002. Other artists have incorporated "Genius of Love" into their works, including Public Enemy's "Leave This Off Your Fuckin' Charts", Redman's "Brick City Mashin'", Cam'ron's "Me, My Moms & Jimmy", 2nd II None's "Niggaz Trippin'", Fresh Kid Ice's "Roll Call", 2Pac's "High Speed", Seagram's "I Don't Give a Fuck", Busta Rhymes' "One", Ant Banks' "Roll 'Em Phat", P.M. Dawn's "Gotta Be... Movin' On Up", Menajahtwa's "I Ain't Nasti", 50 Cent's "When I Get Out", Erick Sermon's "Genius E Dub", Mac Dre's "Chop that Ho", Dream Warriors' "And Now the Legacy Begins", T.I.'s "Down Like That", R.A. the Rugged Man's "Tom Thum", Mark Morrison's "Return of the Mack", Ice Cube's "Bop Gun (One Nation)", Warren G's "What's Love Got to Do with It", the D-Influence Real Live Mix of Billie's "Girlfriend", Latto's "Big Energy", and Paramore's "Rose-Colored Boy", during their shows at the After Laughter Tour.

@Bradley Daniels Assigning any special significance to any one particular member of Talking Heads completely ignores and spits on how every member of that band was completely integral to the sound, and they would not have worked as a band without each other. David Byrne’s voice and a lot of his own ideas on how to communicate what the band was verbally _saying,_ as well as his ideas about stage performance in general, was *just* as important as Tina’s writing and impeccable bass. There can be no whole without all the parts.

This was, to my knowledge, my mother's favorite song. No matter what she was doing, if it played, she was dancing- My mom was a bit more like an older sibling than my mother (she was 18 when she had me), and I distinctly remember as a kid she'd play this constantly. Whole nine yards: hand movement dancing. Singing every word like it was her song. My mom passed 2 years ago, but every time I hear this song, it takes me back to the summer of 2001, which was probably the best time of my life (even though I was only 6). RIP, Momma- I'm still playing this song daily for you 😊

We still hear this today. Mariah Carey used it in her song “Fantasy” that topped the billboard hot 100 for 8 weeks and just last year Latto sampled it in her song “Big Energy”. The funny thing is, when they talk about the song “big energy”, they say Lotto sampled it from Mariah Carey without even realizing where it actually came from and how old it really is. And in another 30-40 years when everyone forgets it again, someone else will sample it to make it a hit again.

In Latto's case, I think she really did sample it because of Mariah. Her song "Big Energy" has the line "I can be your fantasy" in it and she also said she idolized Mariah growing up. Strangely enough, she initially denied the Mariah reference at first saying that she had never heard of "Fantasy" before, but now Mariah is on the remix edition so Idk what was going on there.

For a song originally recorded on a master tape of inferior analog quality when compared to variable digitally recorded methods of today, all superior to the plastic or metal tapes of the past because the recording method would leave behind a faint hiss which was the sound of the tape as it moves & records. You couldn't eliminate it until digital recording could capture all of the sound & basically print it onto a metal tape which another player could read or play without that hiss. Such a tape for this song does not exist i assure you. Although Digital recording was available in 1970, no major record label had such a studio until 1979 & it wasnt until Sony & Phillips, capitalizing on RCA's Laser Disc for video, began selling audio CDs in 1982 & because the master tapes all had a faint hiss when played the new CDs captured that sound which all other methods of distribution could not duplicate. Such as cassette & vinyl records. It was also the first time an artist would sound exactly as recorded. Before an artist had to record a sound that fit what a vinyl recording would sound like without the benefit of having a vinyl recording until it was too late. The master recording is what is used to make copies such as stamping out vinyl records by replicating the master tape onto a metal disc used to then stamp out the record. That technology can NOT CAPTURE THE HISS. Also that metal disc used to be called the master recording. It does not mean first recording it mean recording intended to stamp out other for profit proprietary material. I only explain this because others bitched about what i wrote. They didnt live thru this era & misinterpreted what my words meant. I was alive this era & grew up with the changing technology. And it isn't done changing trust me. Anyways... one wouldn't expect Genius of Love to survive the hands of time as a song. We have hundreds of thousands of songs recorded every year. How many survive a year? I am talking the song not the fucking tape! But this song, wow, it has survived & has shocked a lot of people this song is older than they are. I think that qualifies for classic. Another part is the lyrics & the video. Is that Genius or what?! Trust me 3 girls in jail in 1981 was 3 Ho's in jail because jails were to hold men or really bad girls. As example in the 1950s a girl was sent to a doctor to determine her virginity. If you were not a virgin you went to jail & immediately labeled a slut because you were not a virgin. Good girls didn't go to jail. Today it can be as common, but never as common as men sent to jail. Women still wiggle their ass to get out of jail. Men who wiggle their ass get sent to the gay jail. Anyways... the lyrics are fun to hear today because a lot more women have been to jail & virginity is no longer an issue or perceived as such. In 1981 trust me, a girl in jail was a bad trouble causing girl. Today it could be a simple traffic infraction. So when the song begins asking what you gonna do when you get out of jail you think immediately todays bad girl & none allowed to smoke cigarettes in jail or an innocent slightly drunk college educated girl in which jail hangs as a threat for the government to extort thousands of dollars from her to stay out of jail. Today we call that a DUI a major crime, it was a slap on the wrist in 1981. In 1981 it could be for shoplifting and today does anybody go to jail for shoplifting? In 1981 it could be for smoking pot. Today its legal. Well unless you live in one of those "no democracy" states whose totalitarian govt rules you like a wicked step mother.

What does the recording method have to do with it? There are plenty of songs far older than this that were recorded on tape that are iconic and legendary…
@vidarnilsson816
@vidarnilsson816 2 года назад
Actually tape is a far more reliable storage medium than say, a hard drive, or a DAT or a CD. If computers were invented 100 years ago, would you today be able to read 100 year old audio files? Let alone access a 100 year old hard drive? Most hard drives have a life span of 20 years max. Tape can be stored indefinitely without corrupting itself and can, and probably always will be able to be played back, even in the future. And forget about the cloud! That's just renting someone elses server space, which is stored on a disk as well.
@cme98
@cme98 2 года назад
@@egglady ...and nobody said there wasn't. You misinterpreted what i was saying & thought i was talking negatively. I wasn't. It's just that its difficult and RARE to find a song recorded in any part of our history since we have had this technology (1860) have we had any recording come back 2 full generations later (40 years) & become widely popular again on its own original recording. Other times it has come close the recording was either remastered or re-recorded using new musicians/singers. But Genius of Love is still the last of the last recorded using analog tape before studios could afford to upgrade metal/digital tape. You could always tell which artist used the older technology because you could hear a slight "hiss" from the tape playing. It was never enough to be bothersome because when music was sold in 1981 on vinyl or tape the quality diminished even further from the manufacturing process so... you never heard the hiss. But you also could never experience what it "really" sounded like either that day in the studio. Not until 1979 when the first songs were recorded digitally. But nobody else could hear that recording than the owner of that master digital recording either. Until 1982 when Sony Ltd of Japan took RCA's Laser Video Disc technology they had been working on since the 1960s to replace stylus needles used in phonographs or turntables into digital readers which could read without interruption from scratches on a vinyl 33 or 45rpm record, or a tape, read the recording -just the recoding- without excess noise or hiss. But this was not inexpensive research & development. Simple audio sales was not enough. RCA bet on selling movies to consumers on records the size of albums for around $60 each plus their video players were around $1,500 ($3,600 today). The VCR was less expensive, much lower in quality, but... it could record & RCA ignored inventing the #1 reason people bought a less advanced product... to see themselves on television. Its also the #1 selling point of a phone today as well. ANYWAYS.... through all that time I cant think of any artists recording who has come back 40 years later as a hit, again, than this band, a part of "Talking Heads" whose song "Genius of Love" was at the time in 1981 achieved gold status & was bigger than anything else Talking Heads had done up to that time. And... they almost never recorded or wrote it. Ok, Now I have to finish the sad story about RCA. RCA began producing the first radios & equipment for stations which played the fragile 78 rpm records wealthier Americans played at home on their Victrola's, (the first record players) between radio programs & also included new songs creating new sales. RCA bought Victor & became an empire by producing the first radios, car radios (before Ford GM or Chrysler) and sold record players, invented the much higher quality 45 RPM & to top it off sold the first television sets, they also owned all of NBC by 1930. The practicality was the Laser Disc would offer superior sound quality to play recordings but it wasn't cheap to manufacture. RCA bet the company on the Laser Disc & player spending an unprecedented BILLION dollars at the time ($10-bil today) for a single technology & take it to market. Nobody had ever done that. Banks would never lend that amount on a risk. It didn't even cost Apple or IBM to bring the PC or BigMac to market that amount. Thats a staggering amount of money to put into R& D and to have your product fail started the beginning of the end for RCA. Another RCA discovery was the Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) -which worked great for the astronauts going to the moon & for RCA to sell for clocks, watches, early mainframe computers & calculators & voltmeters. But they totally missed turning the LCD into the flat screen TV or PC Monitor. Japan turned both inventions of RCA the LCD screen into a TV screen for every laptop tablet & smartphone out there & the Laser Disc went to the compact disc which eventually turned into a simple download today. RCA was bought for $6.2 billion in 1985 from General Electric who also were the company who created them for the sole purpose of buying out Marconi's radio invention because he refused to sell it to Thomas Edison who owned General Electric. The failure of RCA would be comparable to the failure of Apple 50 years from now. It just seems unimaginable. But there isn't a single person who hasn't been effected. RCA gave us what George Westinghouse, Thomas Edison, & Nikola Tesla couldn't either, but each dreamed about. Westinghouse had a 20% share in RCA, GE a 50% share.
@cme98

@@vidarnilsson816 i have some doubt about your claim to tape, but research points to you been accurate & i still dont buy it, lol. Unless it is magnetic tape. Invented in 1928 which wasn't used successfully as a way for storage until after the video tape recorder around 1950 & today is the most used. But it is still metal paint sprayed onto a plastic film tape & plastics worse enemy is UV light. Light is the only thing oil has no immunity from because oil has only known total darkness. There was no need to protect itself from light. Its one reason why 99% of the oil in a spill eventually vanishes. Because sunshine is the only thing in nature which it has no defense from. Same as your outdoor plastic furniture, it becomes brittle & its not from cold & heat which breaks up the molecular structure it is sunshine which does faster & quicker damage. Same with cars or planes who use composites. Sunshine will eat up a cars paint which is why a special proprietary paint is used on stealth bombers & Boeings 787. If not & flown in sunshine they would quickly lose structure integrity. By the way... the hardrive on voyager-1 is 24 years old by now & functions fine running on Windows-95 billions of miles away. While the Earth has an atmosphere & environment which can attack anything we make to record or build simply from plate techtonics or weather alone. There is one place it can last almost forever & guaranteed billions of years to keep every record we make & that is our MOON. Left undisturbed just like Voyager 1 & 2.

Takes me back to my senior year in HS. This was the first song I ever heard on the brand new fad, the Sony Walkman. The sound quality just blew me away, miles from the old radios with the little earpiece we used to wear. This song always puts a smile on my face.

Shout out all to the other people who wracked their brains to remember the name of this song sampled in Mariah Carey's song used in "Free Guy", gave up & turned to Google, slapped their foreheads and exclaimed, "That's it!", then went straight to RU-vid to hear the unadulterated original and found this video.
