Love his voice and sound. "I hope I don't fall in love with you" is my favorite. Most people know his song "I like mytown with a little drop of poison" from Shrek. But his blues and regular singing voice ( which he really isn't using in this) is incredible. But really cannot go wrong with any of his songs. He has also has done some acting.... normally plays the eccentric! His voice is incredible, like Cohen's.

"God's Away On Business" was my favorite track by Tom Waits for some time, so I am happy to see a reaction to it. Now, I don't think I could commit to have one favorite Tom Waits song, maybe I might have a favorite one day, but then I will likely have a different favorite the following day. I can say this much, whichever Tom Waits song I am listening to, during the duration of that song, it will be my favorite, at least until the next song begins playing!

I think he is saying that "liars, cheats, lawyers are in charge of this world". Pretty much things are screwed. God's away on business cuz' he certainly ain't doing anything down here to make things better, seeing who's really in charge.

Tom! Saw him in a club in Willimantic, Connecticut in 1975, expecting to see New Riders of the Purple Sage. Sage had vehicle problems so they got Tom in from NYC, he, a piano, and a bass player. What an amazing show!

"Better Off Without A Wife" from the "Nighthawks At The Diner" album. In fact, anything from that album, or that era of his career. There's some good video out there.

Nighthawks at the diner was Tom's second album (I think). The album is live at a small club with a heavy jazz sound and Tom telling jokes between tunes. I think it's his best album.

A little late but I’ve enjoyed watching your reactions to some of my personal favorites. Beastie Boys catalog was cool. I’m shocked you actually landed on one of my top five artists of all time. He’s a true American wordsmith. I’ve only been able to see him live one time and I literally shed a tear, could’ve been the wine. I’m not surprised you’re diggin Waits, youve got an open mind and that’s really cool. One of Wait’s biggest influences was Captain Beefheart. Check out his song “Plastic Factory”

Best version: Cookie monster sings "god's away on business". And the meaning is that liars, cheats & lawyers are in charge, and that's why we're screwed. Hence the dark tone of the song.

I'm not religious but I was raised Roman Catholic. Gods away on business so you can do whatever you want doesn't work. He always knows what you up to regardless. To bad he's myth.

Waits is always a trip. But he had the sexiest woman alive (IMO) for a girlfriend, Rickie Lee Jones. They broke up for reasons unknown to me but I think because Rickie was having more success than Tom and he couldn't handle it. Rickie loved this man and loved the way he made love like a lion (her words). Tom married shortly after his breakup with Rickie.
