Tom Waits turned 72 on December 7th...How does a 24 year-old crank out a masterpiece album in 1973? This song was written 48 years ago...I'm 68 years-old and I have a funny feeling this scene in a bar hasn't changed at all... 😉 My favorite...

He perfectly captures a universal theme about the one who got away.....the missed opportunity....the missed chance....the heart thumping in the chest feel restrained by fear of rejection or possible hurt....burned in love before and hesitant to risking it again....hopelessly romantic despite claims to the contrary....I'll have another stout.

In my opinion, this is his best song. Been a fan for years and years and I always come back to this album and specifically this song.

If this isn’t the best love song of all time, it’s not far off. How you can capture such beauty in what is a drunken 15 minute period is incredible. How many fantastic love songs tell their stories in eternal time frames, with massive emotions and powerful imagery, yet how few can so brilliantly preserve the simplicity of a snapshot. Just one ordinary, insignificant moment in time. Loneliness, hope, and loneliness again, the girl comes and goes and then we’re left with the feeling of what might have been. Tom, you did a really special thing with this one.

I just broke up with my girlfriend, and somehow this masterpiece brings me a waterfall of tears. Damn, how I miss her... Wonderful girl, wonderful human being, I wish you the best, you deserve it, I wish things had turned out better for us.

A few months ago I met a girl, a fellow musician. We became very close as friends and I stumbled upon this song, half-heartedly thinking it was a premonition. Two days ago we've parted ways because I realized that I was developing feelings for her due to so many mutual things in common. She has a boyfriend and I felt it just wasn't right to unwillingly interfere or break up a relationship. Now I'm back here listening to this song and tears are in my eyes. I feel ya, Tom, I so feel ya.

I had the biggest crush on this girl way, WAY back in 2002 when I was in my last year of high school. Her name was Michelle. I never spoke to her cause I was too shy. I tried at graduation but never got the chance then. I discovered Tom and this album a decade or so later, and for some reason this song reminds me of her. Wherever she is, I hope she’s okay. 😣

I'd forgotten how beautiful this song is (melody, lyrics, and vocalist) until I heard it used in a movie soundtrack (Flora & Son 2023). I remember first hearing this song on AM radio when it was first released (early middle school for me). That was a magical era for music IMO, so the fact that this song stood out even above the sea of fine music we were swimming in, says alot.

Its taken me a long time to appreciate Tom Waits, but now I think he is one of the best songwriters, after Joni of course🙂.

Tom's character was a coward here. "Faint heart never won fair lady." Such a beautiful song. And thankfully Tom got it together later in life and married the beautiful Kathleen Brennan from County Cork.
