Inside a broken clock Splashing the wine With all the Rain Dogs Taxi, we'd rather walk. Huddle a doorway with the Rain Dogs For I am a Rain Dog, too Oh, how we danced and we swallowed the night For it was all ripe for dreaming Oh, how we danced away all of the lights We've always been out of our minds. The Rum pours strong and thin Beat out the dustman With the Rain Dogs Aboard a shipwreck train Give my umbrella to the Rain Dogs For I am a Rain Dog, too. Oh, how we danced with the Rose of Tralee Her long hair black as a raven Oh, how we danced and you Whispered to me You'll never be going back home
I wonder if this is a tip of the hat to the old song "Oh how we danced on the night we were wed." As kids, my sister and I used to make up funny verses to come next. :)
A dog out in the rain loses its scent trail. It wanders the dark, dripping streets of the city, always moving, never finding their way back home, or to anything that quite feels like home. But oh, how we dance with the rose of Tralee...
I would listen to this album every day back in the '80s. Living in the rainy part of the U.S., the Pacific Northwest, I'd drive my old '72 BMW 3.0 from Portland out to the Oregon Coast. There's something about the rain, the constant drizzle, that paired so perfectly with this album. It was like the soundtrack to those grey, misty days. Thank you, Mr. Waits, for being the background music to my early years. Your music didn't just accompany the scenery; it became a part of it.
Discover this man last month. Listened to all the albums and now I’m obsessed with him and his voice, creative sound, and amazing songwriting (Especially on 6 of the albums including this one). Definitely top ten solo artists ever for now.
"Who is there listening to steady level roaring rain all around, brooding and listening and waiting, in the rain-washed, rain-twinkled dark." - Jack Kerouac
They call them Rain Dogs because they can't find their way home. The rain washed away the scent trail and so they wander. "...for I am a Raaain Dog too."
This is my favorite Tom Waits' album because of the hilarious stories, the punchy horns, and the guitar-work. My other favorite album is Frank's Wild Years.
I have Jim Jarmusch to thank for introducing me to Tom Waits. Two of his songs were featured in Down By Law and I was struck at the vocals and ltrics. They were unlike anything I had heard before. In my memory (it might be wrong) I made a beeline to the record shop just down the block from the movie theatre and picked up Rain Dogs. I was an instant fan and eagerly awaited each new album. But I drifted away from him over the last twenty-five years. I occasionally "discover" a new song. One i particular is titled Hell Broke Luce. I thought it was a recent release because it just fit with the times we're living in, but it was recorded several years ago. Great song though. His voice is getting more ragged but he can still write songs like no one else.
Check out the Fishing With John (Lurie) videos. There are six - one with Waits, Willem Dafoe, Matt Dillon, Jim Jarmusch and two with Dennis Hopper. They're all pretty funny but the ice fishing one with Willem Dafoe is the best.
Honestly, I discovered him more or less the same way! Except instead of a movie theatre I watched the thing from a home release. But other than that... yes. Tango Till They're Sore especially stuck with me.
I've been a fan since "Closing Time" and have all of his recordings in one format or another. I still, and will always believe, that "Fish and Bird" is the most beautiful song ever conceived.

I am here due to an article from 1998 where members of Metallica were asked what they were currently listening to. Each listed 10 artists and songs. All but Lars had this on there list. I am no artist but I don’t see the appeal. Thank you
@@Bubba__Sawyer My reply reads as very terse. Not the intention. I actually like when a show has an original theme that sounds like something I like. It's, like, really cool.
