One of Tom Waits best songs, this song touches my heart, every time I listen to it. He paints life with his words, and makes it so melancholical, you just feel it deep into your soul.
dunno if you guys cares but if you're bored like me during the covid times then you can watch pretty much all of the latest movies and series on Instaflixxer. Have been streaming with my girlfriend for the last couple of months =)
He's not for everyone, its a bit like having your first Guinness..you grow to enjoy it. Tom is a brilliant musician and writer and he too grows on you and enhances your love of fine music. Thanks for Posting.
Duke!!! I LOVE YOU!! PLEASE PUSH OUT ONE MORE AMAZING ALBUM!!! I miss your old stuff... Do we need a couple drinks to start again??! I love you, but can do your songs exact,,, as long as I am drinking too.. Let us all know if you hit the road again... I will go to the moon if you start drinking again... Love you bro!!!
It should be noted that this is two song - "Invitation To The Blues" and "Eggs and Sausage(in a Cadillac with Susan Michelson)". Just pointing that out. Great sutff. Thanks so much.
Here in Atlanta there's some very good covers of Tom being played. And this song in particular in dark of a winter night... What can I say? Just the classic song writer.
Damn!!! That is great performing. I saw Tom at Zellerbach Auditorium on the Berkeley university campus right around this same time, and is was one of the best shows I've ever attended.
Tom Waits 43 years ago!?!? just look at that sweet boyish face, those full child's lips! crazy disconnect w that grimy, butt-ends-in-pooling-liquid-reflecting-flickering-neon-echoes-alley voice.
i think tom waits can appeal to the broken down man more than anyone i've ever heard of. maybe second to elliott smith but tom waits pursued through it so that makes him a bigger man....but elliott smith knew some pain too
There is nothing I have encountered from Tom, and I've been an avid fan for over 25 years, that wasn't deeper than a raspy voice. Yes, he's sometimes hard to understand: this style of singing is called "scat". Brought in by the Jazz culture. Download the lyrics--well worth it!
'Scat' singing is otherwise known as wordless vocals and there is no element of that here but I like the way Waits is singing in an almost Louis Armstrong style way. Ella Fitzgerald is probably the greatest 'Scat' vocalist. Check out her old Memorex tape ad which is on 'RU-vid'.
I wasn't talking about the composition itself, I was only refering to his tecnique playing... I didn't meant to say it's bad, just meant to say there are better ones, technically, with their instrument... When it comes to composition, i think he is awesomelly good...The rythmic syncopation and dissonances he uses at times are simply genious... Brilliant man+brilliant ideas+brilliant comping musicians...it's the best thing there is... =P
Tom is an international traveler with good German shoes, Irish woolen socks, a half pint of Russian vodka & a cuban cigar in his jacket pocket and a three day stubble; down to his last Chesterfield filterless and he pissed that he left his lighter in the bus station on a rainy Wednesday night> He ponders the galaxy; his galaxy by the way; we just live in his cosmic dust. Don't make him madder or it'll only cause more earthquakes.
Thanks for the correction on the definition of "scat" singing. I sit corrected! I was mostly thinking of his "Step Right Up" but technically, that's not scat either. But I can't compare dear Tom to Louis Armstrong or Ella Fitzgerald. They set the unset mark...
I am very rarely speechless, but now I just don't seem to be able to find an epithet good enough. 'Awesome' just seems dull, and 'epic' is not epic enough.
That's exactly what I'm taking about: he's a showman and a businessman. But for exactly that reason I can only take whaterver he does with a grain of salt. He's putting on an act and there's no secret about that, but I can never believe his songs and performance like I can believe Leadbelly's singing and know everything he sings about he is living. This performance by Tom is outright horrible clowning though but he's down for that too.
If he was a businessman...would he donate the money he earns, for instance, when he prosecutes sb for copyrights violation?... I like Tom, and the way he sings.I know there were loads os musicians whose music is far better, technically speaking, but the music i like the most is his. not just because of the music but because of tom himself. He ain't pretentious, he's just true to himself. He is what he is and there's nth that could change that.
A fair amount of them I'd say. In Germany, you have to take English at school, even back then (the East Germans mostly had to learn Russian, poor sods...)
What idea of beeing German can you have when not beeing one - obviously. Art is only reserved to the superior, you think. You are more of what Germany is known for than any of us.
No sorry, it's not "scat". Scat is improvising vocal notes over accompaniment without lyrics. In other words, singing notes rather than words.Waits does scat occasionally, but the majority of his singing is in lyrics. Scat was first made popular by Louis Armstrong Ella Fitzgerald.
Not sure about your comment, about some musicians work being technically better. Tom Waits uses some very interesting/complex chord sequences and often plays modally, his main strength really is in the quality of the song writing.
At first I though the same but give him a chance. Rain dogs for instance is amazing. Maybe you should listen to lives such as big time. Still one thing is true : there are some older song he can't sing the "right way" anymore
