He could end up like the silent answer to the Keith Richards meme. They joke, how is he still alive? But all I can say is, the universe needs him here. The world may not know him like it knows Keith, but that's okay. The heart is bigger than any arena.
I'm almost as old as this man's career, and I'm just discovering his music..this is amazing. I don't have the proper words to describe how his storytelling feels inside. Sad, wistful, happy, hopeful...just nails all the feels. This guy is genius!
I feel this. I put my cat down last month and when I carried her to my truck I gave her one last look at our field, brook and paths we played in. ...thanks Tom
In 6 days, I'm leaving my home for the past 34 years. I took one last look this morning at some of my favourite places. Came home, found this by complete accident - can't stop crying.
It was a harsh work day for me. I got home, opened a beer, played this video and I forgot all the shit around me! Life gets really beautiful when you experience it through the pure art. Thanks Tom! You pay me valueless moments for free!
Tom's music has brought his words to a worldwide audience that now would not be without them, in fact should not be without them, in fact it cannot be without them, Or ...I cannot imagine my world without them. He has the soul of Samuel Beckett's spirit and the gearbox of a souped up Volkswagen Golf. All the love, as always, Tomcat. All the love, and thank you once again. Keep the change.
Dave seemed really moved there. I think it struck a chord with him. The shots of that scuffed stage was strangely magical. So many people had passed through the show, leaving marks and scratches in the life and energy that gave on the show. And now its time to move on. Beautiful
Tom reminds me that it's okay to be a freak. To stick out like a sore thumb. To not get blended so much into the crowd that you can't tell who's who. That it's okay to be "weird." For four years he's serenaded me. Thank your tree, Tom, on my behalf, for giving birth to you.
I met Mr. Waits by chance while working at a camera store in 1996. I'll never forget it. He was a kind and gentle soul. I was working at the register that day, by chance. Tom was buying some gear for his son. It's now been 23 years. His voice is the same in real life as it is in song. Like Clint Eastwood, there is no other person with Tom's voice. You know it the moment it's spoken, you know it from the tempo in the words and the places it takes your mind. It is as if time takes a break for 4 min. to let us imagine this place on the wind. Travel well, Tom. _________________________________ FYi...The LATE NIGHT Show has never been the same since Dave and company left. They made this empire of a late night event. It will never again live up to the greatness that was delivered day after day, year after year. They drove it right down the middle of the road....with class. ________________________________ The current seat warmer of a host, doesn't deserve to sweep the sound stage floor, let alone clean the toilets in the basement. His political drivel is boring at best and insulting at worst.
The Devil ahh, the Devil, thats so sweet. I wish you so so much luck and good wishes. I get your sentiment totally. But remember,- better to be alone than to be be with the wrong person. Keep searching my friend...
this is a good one. Im always happy an crying at the same time with Tom.If there is some esoteric, poet girl out there who needs an imperfect friend...let me know. I have never found the person who gets the religious experience that Tom and similar artists bring. Today in the woods....I found a mason jar, with the lid off. Inside it was plants, worms, and other stuff that is over my head. A whole world was living in that half ass terrarium provided by a something greater than me.... I cant get it out of my head. Tom's lyrics give me that same lift and puzzled awe...Jtii
+John Urso John lad you need to write a verse or two yourself, what you wrote is very singer songwriter and honest but still very original. "Today in the woods"......... I know writers who couldn't put into words what you have ever and boy do they try. Cheers fae the Highlands of Bonnie Scotland. (even here we appreciate Mr Waits)
Tom is my absolute favorite artist, the first song i ever heard him sing was misery of the world almost 2 decades ago and i have listened to him every day since, his music is just what i need, when im on the nickel looking for the ice cream man under blue sky's with an invitation to the blues, he always puts me in a better mood, so come on in and take off your skin and dance around in your bones as you watch her disappear, because small change got rained but toms music is food for the soul
I'm sorry, but right now I haven't got the time to praise Tom Waits, because if I start, it'll go on all day or even all week. I just need to do some other stuff right now. Same goes for Dylan.
Had the pleasure of seeing Tom Waits live in Tampa back in 1981,Best concert Ive ever been to. I only listen to Tom Waits and of course the Beatles and I am a girl.Im sure there a lot of us that love Tom
Let's watch the sun come up in another town Try our luck a little further down Leave the cards on the table Leave the bread on the plate Put your hand on the gearshift Put your foot off the break And take one last look At the place that you are leaving Take one last look Oh, take one last look At the place that you are leaving Take one last look Our bed was something that the wind couldn't carry The arrow points away across the waiting prairie This car looks like it could give us a good run Our choice to leave was a good one And take one last look At the place that you are leaving Take one last look Oh, take one last look At the place that you are leaving Take one last look Let's look forward to the lights that are new The world is a ribbon of road for you All towns have churches and tire shops They put up speed limit signs and they hire cops I love to see the wind in your hair All we ever need we can get anywhere
Billy Joe Shaver says, "I'm an old chunk of coal, but I'll be a diamond some day." Tom Waits says, "I'm a diamond, but I'll be a chunk of coal some day."
This man breaks my heart every time, he can communicate in pain with his words. I really hope he had a happier life than his songs depicted. I haven't, but I still hope for others.
My boyfriend 30 yrs ago turned me on to his music never forgot his name or music just started listening to him again after so many yes, he is still fantastic 😊
:Take a look at the lights that are new, the world's ribbon of road for you"...What a line. Tom Waits is one of the greatest writers of our age. He is his own musical, artistic culture, defined by just 'being'. I can't watch this without tears. Letterman would have been so moved...Thanks
His words reach out and grab me and there's nothing I can do but listen. He plays with words as a child plays with toys. Always trying to build something that lasts. I like Tom Waits, and I've never even met him.
Lyrics Let’s watch the sun come up in another town Try our luck a little further down Leave the cards on the table Leave the bread on the plate Put your hand on the gearshift Put your foot off the brake And take one last look At the place that you are leaving Take one last look Oh take one last look At the place that you are leaving Take one last look I beg for something that the wind can carry There are all points of ways across the waiting prairie This car looks like it could give us a good run A choice to leave was a good one And take one last look At the place that you are leaving Take one last look Oh take one last look At the place that you are leaving Take one last look Let’s look forward to the lights that are new, The world is a ribbon of road for you All towns have churches and tire stops They put up speed limit signs and they hire cops I love to see the wind in your hair All we ever need we can get anywhere And take one last look At the place that you are leaving Take one last look Oh take one last look At the place that you are leaving Take one last look Oh take one last look Oh take one last look
It sounds as though he is hinting to the end point of his career. I will miss you so much Tom. Beautiful man, you rocked my artistic world. Legacy!!!! ~
Anyone else make the connection that the other big name night show host, Johnny Carson had Bette Midler do his last song? Some "history" between Bette and Tom. Dave really liked Tom. So fitting. Also, love Tom's still boyish humility he shows at every concert and here at the end, like he's almost embarrassed at being congratulated for being so brilliant. (Catch the last few seconds where he goes over to talk to Paul.) Mr. Waits: no superlatives or adjectives for this god who walks the earth.
I would rank the greatest song writers and performers of their own songs thusly: Male, Tom Waits, the one who hangs somewhere between insanity and genius. Female, Mary Gauthier, the greatest songwriter of our day.
Awesome man of music lyrics and soul. If I were ever to meet him, I would have to touch his face and hand in sincere hope of claiming the smallest amount of his inspiration. 👣🙃😋
"Whetherbeaten" Wow. Excellent. What a terrific choice of words you chose to describe Tom Waits and everything about him. ( I wish I had thought or it.) He is a sad and tragic figure. I suspect that any truly happy moments throughout his life were few and far between.
@@johnl1685I think you'll find that I spelt it correctly when I used the term WEATHER BEATEN as in beaten up by shitty weather... WHETHER BEATEN makes no sense whatsoever and qualifies you as a PLONKER
EnosEverything -- I think you misunderstood my comment. I was merely complimenting you on your choice of words and how the term "Weatherbeaten" describes Tom Waits perfectly. Sorry for the mixup. ( P..S. What is a "PLONKER" ?)
@@johnl1685 John - I am sorry for my rather 'nasty' retaliatory remarks - I sadly am an obsessive when it comes to spelling and my patience tends to run extremely thin these days... The term PLONKER comes from the U.K. t.v.show ONLY FOOLS AND HORSES where the character DEL BOY instead of calling his mates and others in his life dickheads he refers to them as plonkers... if you ever get a chance to watch this wonderful t.v.series that is about thirty years old now - it is an absolute treat .. David Jason who played Del Boy is a comedy legend in the U.K.. and the show won many awards for comedy.... As for TOM WAITS - I have seen him live in concert three times - twice in London and once here in Brisbane... An absolute genius.
I've recently enjoyed a lot more of Tom's mesic, he was brought to my attention by a lady friend, who played me the song I'm sure the title is I think I just fell in love with you an absolutely stunning song.
