This is, without doubt, the greatest opening to a golf broadcast ever.

And no spitting, swearing, club throwing, walking off the 18th green before your opponent has holed out, disgraceful behaviour off course as well... These were great days in golf.

Crazy how he would almost win this same tournament 31-32 years later at age 59.

You don't need rose-tinted glasses to realise that Watson and Nicklaus would be a match for anyone in today's game (as Watson showed in '09 at 59). Fabulous shot-making and putting. 2 all-time greats.

Well, they're both very well respected and highly thought of in their particular fields. What field are you in? I'm rather well known in the grass mowing business. Thanks

That was the best day of golf ever. Jack holing that putt on the 18th for an unlikely equalizing birdie showed how close this battle was. Well played Tom Watson. Wow.

Everyone says Jack didn't have the touch around the greens. Still, in all of these old films from his major tournaments he plays some superb little chips, pitches and bunker shots.

Lost in the incredible duel between Watson and Nicklaus was Arnold Palmer shooting the lowest rounds 3 and 4 (67-69) combined after those 2 and logging his last top 10 finish in a major.

@quantumpotential7639 Год назад
I didn't know this. You know your leader board that's for sure. Palmer was 88 years old too when this Open was contested which means he really played a nice game over these two days. They should have awarded him the trophy anyhow just because of great this feat was, and still is. Thanks

I was always a Tom Watson fan; that fluid, yet strong swing.. This truly was an epic battle but I was happy that Watson came out on top.Two very worthy contenders, and one Grand Champion. As Tom says afterwards; the shoe often fit on the other foot as well.. But at The British Open, Tom was the greater, winning five to Jack's three. Certainly two of the greatest of all time. In my opinion, The Open is the toughest challenge, with the courses being less "garden-like" than is often the case in the US, and the weather so often playing a part as well. British, especially Scottish and Irish courses hold top spot in my heart.

Nineteen year old kid in Overland Park KS as parents were watching this. Huge Tom Watson fan as I moved to Portland soon after. Had no idea how close this was. Last shot by Jack should be lot's more famous. The skill and grace. Just incredible.

I know the result but tbh I didn't realise Tom W reeled Jack in despite being 2 behind by the 4th of the last round. Fabulous golf by both and Jack was a gracious loser.

Two world class golfers at the time with the technology and courses. Forget about who'd be better with more fitness, better ball and club technology and social media, these guys were world class in today's plastic world. Awesome !

Hubert Green always claims that he won this tournament. Me and all the others were playing golf - whatever game those guys were playing on Sunday I’ll never know - he said !! Twice Watson made outrageous off the green birdies in the finals holes to pip Nicklaus for a Major Title - the 16th here and the 17th at the 1982 US Open.
