Just visited for the 4th time. July 2024. Tomar is improving in brisk steps. More restaurants, more bars, more shops, almost everything has improved, and I am sure its down to tourism. Good value too, house wine just €10 a bottle in a restaurant. The Templar castle/ monastery is one of the most impressive and complete buildings I've ever visited. Compact and perfect little city for a weekend getaway

Awesome video guys. I do love Tomar and can see you guys liked it too. Beautiful colours. You know I've never seen an Op shop in Portugal, my whole wardrobe comes from op shops so will seek this one out next year. 9 euro lunch such a bargain, the little jugs of wine always make me smile. Again a very generous serve for lunch, I'd be relaxing in the park afterwards too.

Our wardrobes are 90% op shop, and it's always great to stumble across a charity shop in a new place 🥳🎉 We've found a few in Portugal, two in Portimão and this one in Tomar. My fiance and I love watching your videos. We really appreciate your down to earth travel style and you seem like such likeable people. They are inspiring. We are early retiring in our 50s (two years away!) and plan to move to portugal. We are currently looking at either Tomar, Leiria, or Marinha Grande. Was originally set on Tomar but wathcing the temps it seems a little warmer than we'd like as we will not own a car. It's hard to find any Marinha Grande taken from the street walking around so it's hard to tell how walkable/bikable the town is, but we'll figure it out. Thank you for taking the time to put together these videos of your adventures. Keep them coming! Robert and Stacy, future Portugal residents.

Hello Robert and Stacy, and thank you for the compliment and your very kind comment! How exciting to be planning your early retirement, and you've certainly picked a wonderful country in which to retire! We like both Tomar and Leiria, but have only passed through Marinha Grande on the bus from Nazaré to Leiria. It looked like a nice little town. There are regular local buses going from there to Leiria, which is a major transport hub, so you might not need a car! We are so pleased you enjoy our videos, and we appreciate you taking the time to write! Wishing you all the best! ~ Mandy 😀😁

High caliber vid as usual. Tomar looks lovely. Haven’t been but heard a lot of positives so looking forward to this series. ✅ (I’m afraid Tomar may sneak into my long A-list of places to retire in PT 😧). Off topic: graffiti. Tomar appears to be mostly graffiti-free (some at 7:35 and 15:07). Is that your video editing or is that just the way Tomar is? I’ve concluded graffiti in PT is more prevalent in larger cities, public facilities and abandoned buildings. Not seeing much in the smaller communities. What’s your take? Obrigado. 🙏🏻

Hello lucchese20! Thank you for your great comment - we always enjoy hearing from you! I didn't notice a lot of graffiti in Tomar, but have 2 more videos to edit so I might find a bit for you. I agree that it seems more prevalent in larger cities and with derelict buildings, but we were shocked to see loads of graffiti in Faro! Lee's working on a Faro video right now, to be published in maybe September, so you'll see how shocking that is! There is a really big derelict building near the bus station in Tomar that stood out to me, as it seems such a shame to leave it fall to rack and ruin. One thing to keep in mind with Tomar is the temperature variation. It gets super hot in summer and really cold in winter, being further inland. Things have been a bit different over these past few months, as we've spent a fair bit of time in isolated places, so haven't had the chance to eat out much. Depending on where we are, I like to have at least 1-3 lunches out per week if we can find a good value menu do dia. It means we rarely eat out in the evenings as it's more expensive, unless it's a kebab or something similar... and we only ate those in Lisbon as it was such a great deal! Very rarely do we not finish our meals, but if we couldn't then I'd definitely ask for a doggie bag, or would put it in my emergency plastic bag! We loved the Caucasus, and spent almost 5 months in the region. There was so much to see and do, and we'd return in a flash! 😀😁 ~ Mandy

@@FrugalTravellers Thanks for explaining. I suppose if you have a big meal it sets you up for the day. I have done quite a bit here but of course 11 days is nothing. I see it as just a taster. Definitely returning in the future too. I would like to hear any recommendations. I think Azerbaijan will definitely be country 99 or 100 but I do have to go home first.

@@julieeggleton9743 Yes, that's exactly it with the big midday lunch specials, which we've found in so many countries in Eurasia... it's not uncommon to find a 2 or 3 course meal with drink and coffee for under €10 in many places in Portugal if you stay clear of the tourist spots. Azerbaijan is amazing, and we made a few videos from our one month there.. but we still have unused footage from places like Ganja, the second largest city, that maybe I'll use someday! ~ Mandy 😁
