Tomato and Vegetable Blossom End Rot Treatments: What It Is, Two Ways to Fix It, What Doesn't Work

I highly recommend you turn on annotations for this video. I add key points. Blossom End Rot (BER) is the browning of the bottoms of tomatoes and other fruits. It can be addressed by ensuring your plants have consistent watering and readily available or soluble calcium in the soil. Eggshells don't work for emergency treatment. I explain why.
I also state copper nitrate spray, I should have said calcium nitrate spray. I have an old brain.

Thanks for saving my tomato crop this year! I live in Central Texas (Zone 9) so we're a few weeks ahead... I plant seedlings on 3.15 outdoors.... again this year I started to experience BER. My terrific local garden experts always encourage use of bone meal but it isn't successful for me. Rather than loose the crop I treated aggressively using garden lime/vinegar (2x a few days apart) and used calcium nitrate spray on the foliage. Great advice that worked perfectly after many years of experiencing BER!

I appreciate your approach to gardening. I call it "common sense gardening". Staying as organic as practical and deviating when necessary. I do the very same thing. The only thing I try to keep totally organic is pesticides, insecticides and herbicides because most, if not all, of the chemical types can be detrimental to your health. Even so, I had no choice but to use Sevin in my garden this year because all of the organic methods failed to control a terrible infestation that would have completely destroyed all of my cucurbit crops otherwise. Common sense gardening.

So if it is on all plants.... I suggest calcium nitrate. I sell it at my shop. It makes like 10 gallons. It is what you would buy in a spray bottle for blossom end rot that costs like $9 a bottle. We sell it in powdered form for like $13. You would need a spray bottle. Im not trying to sell you but suggest a water soluble form of calcium that you can put on the leaves. However, if it doesnt work, I really think something in you soil is locking out calcium to your plants.

@MIgardener
@MIgardener 8 лет назад
Gary, love the approach, but I thought it would be worth mentioning I have a minor in chemistry and I went through the reaction chain and 2 mole of CH3COOH + 1 mole CaCO3 will yield (CH3COO)2Ca + CO2 + H2O which is Calcium acitate, carbon dioxide, and water. Calcium acitate binds phosphorus in the soil which is a key component in soil bacteria and can also hurt the flowering and root development of the tomato plant (leading to other problems later on). Adding some bone meal should solve the issue. But my biggest concern would be if you have epsom salt in the garden which I know you advocate and many gardeners also use, it can bind with the calcium acetate and create calcium sulfate (good for plants) and calcium magnesium acetate which is ice melt. It is a super dangerous salt which can kill plants.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 8 лет назад
Thanks. Good to know. I know I am a bit more liberal with the chemical salts but find minimal use along with regular compost and organic ferts like bone meal and blood meal seem to work. I am more curious about how calcium magnesium acetate could form. I was wondering why snow doesnt stick to my raised bed soil. Appreciated.
@MIgardener
@MIgardener 8 лет назад
Gary Pilarchik I mean it isn't likely because it is more likely to occur in a lab, but in theory it could. I like that you are offering so many options for people to fix their problems though. I don't think enough people do it and thank you for adding that egg shells won't fix the problem right away... it drives me nuts the "pinterest" myths out there.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 8 лет назад
Hey I was just looking up bone meal trying to figure out how much Ca is readily available for something like emergency BER. I saw a product called liquid bone meal that states it has immediate calcium available. Basically it is really fine grinding of bone meal. Do you have any thoughts on it. What I researched is coarsely ground bone meal take a long time to break down, as you get to a finer pulverization, the Ca is much more available. Of course now I cant determine the grinding of what I use. Just curious. I am looking into purchasing 50 pounds bags of bone and blood meal for my gardens when I move. Trying to learn more about them.
@MIgardener
@MIgardener 8 лет назад
Gary Pilarchik bone meal does have readily absorbing calcium but not much. The best form of readily available calcium is called fast acting lime. It is lime that is very loosely held to it's carbon molecules. It breaks down even quicker in the presence of soil bacteria. But it is important to not add too much or it can upset soil pH. That is why personally I use gypsum in my soil. It takes a little longer than lime does, but if you get micronized gypsum (or make it yourself) the particle size makes all the difference in the availability and absorption time.

Just a thought for concentrated solution of both calcium and magnesium would be to purchase a $.68 bottle of carbonated water, 32oz, chilled and adding 3 tablespoons of milk of magnesia, without the chlorine inactive ingredient, which should only have purified water, shaking it, then refrigerate about 30 minutes then shake again until clear; then adding a couple of tablespoons of calcium chloride that you buy from the canning or pickling section for under $5. Then just add an ounce or so to a spray bottle and spray the plants or mix the whole bottle in a couple of gallons of water and pour a cup onto the root section of the plant. This concentrated solution, without the calcium, is magnesium bicarbonate which is bioavailable and goes straight to the cells without having to be broken down, and it would cost about $65 to purchase. Just a thought since everything has to be broken down to its smallest form which is chloride

Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) I'm sorry I deleted my comment. Now I'm making. The truth. blossom end rot is due to acidic soil the moisture from the water on the bottom of your tomatoes. Calcium is good. It helps the plant to absorb nitrogen. To create leaves to shelter the tomatoes. from intense sunlight. So when you water it doesn't split theTomatoes open. Cracked. I made a better comment and RU-vid deleted it before I can even submit it..

Are you making calcium nitrate or are you actually making nitrocalcite? If so wouldn't it in fact be an organic fertilizer like bat guano which contains high levels of nitrocalcite because of limestone coming in contact with bat feces? Or am I misreading into this.
@flawdanative3223
@flawdanative3223 7 лет назад
The second gallon of water you mixed you said was calcium nitrate to spray on the plant and/or feed the base for blossom end rot. Near the end of the video, you refer to the second bottle as copper nitrate to spray on your plants for blossom end rot. You also said you make copper sulfate by using copper wire and acid to make a Bordeaux mix. A Bordeaux mix is a 'fungicide' and it isn't made using acid, it's made using lime. In your defense, you did say "It gets confusing" ...let's see, nitrate mixes with copp, no calcium, but calcium is the nitrate...and sulf... Oh well, I'll figure it out. Thanks for the info. on blossom end rot. I have to plant in 5 gl. buckets and run into this problem a lot. I'll give it a try this spring.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 7 лет назад
Brain cramp. It is calcium nitrate not copper nitrate. The acid creates the copper compound copper sulfate used in the Bordeaux mix. Granted the mixers don't have to use acid but the compound they use is created. General point is some products deemed organic and synthesized by people for components. Copper sulfate is made with sulfuric acid and copper.

Gary, all of my tomato plants are doing great except the 2 Cherokee Purple ones. The plants are big and healthy and have about 10 tomatoes on each plant but EVERY SINGLE ONE has blossom end rot 😭 It seems like every time I grow Cherokee Purple, this happens. They are being watered and fertilized the same as my other types of tomatoes, so I have no clue what’s going on. Anyways, I went out last night and got that exact same Espoma Garden Lime and vinegar and am going to try out your magic mixture on them. I sure hope it works. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thanks again Gary. I am enjoying your Gardening Series of instructional videos. They are well presented and loaded with useful information. I will also be going to you to purchase some Calcium Nitrate as well as more Neem oil in the not too distant future - my garden (year 2 now) gets larger every year. I've tested my soil using an over the counter soil testing kit, and my PH is 7.5 (probably a bit higher but the limitations of the test get in the way of a more precise value). Nitrogen though is probably accurate with a reading of "adequate" because it's a sandy soil and I'm using a soil that has enjoyed probably about 100 tons of composted horse manure over a several year period - without growing anything. And horse manure does not generally contain high levels of nitrogen... Potassium and Phosphorus are in "surplus." The test however, does not tell me if I have a calcium shortage (much less a magnesium shortage). I suspect based upon the performance of my garden last year (as well as earlier in the gardening cycle right now), that my soil may be low in calcium...end rot on my early zuchini plants (could be as you say, incomplete pollination too) as well as tomato branches breaking last year - before there was even tomatoes...I have since put a wire cylinder around my tomato plants to support the branches - with options for adding additional wider, wire cylinders - the tomatoes here grow very well and the plants become very large - like bushes! And I believe that last year, some of my tomatoes did also get BER... My apologies for the long message...Last thing I wanted to say - I also had a cucumber beetle problem this year, and it took about a month to get rid of the problem because I bought the wrong kind of Neem oil. Now, the pests are under control, but the damage was done. Most of my plants have recovered but a couple of my squashes are stunted with what I think is leaf mosaic virus - from the beetles...unless it's a calcium shortage also...if leaf virus, I wonder if additional calcium might help them recover?
@rodhug3757
@rodhug3757 4 года назад
I'm sure Gary can provide you with a more detailed reply, but if you've got squash mosaic virus in your squashes, then it probably depends on the genetic strength of the plant. It may or may not be able to grow its way out of the problem. I suspect that mosaic virus looks like a nutrient deficiency because the virus ends up causing a nutrient deficiency... Gary most like knows one way or the other.
@SH-kn7ut
@SH-kn7ut 4 года назад
@@rodhug3757 Thanks for the comments. A few days ago now, I made a mix of a cup of milk, a gallon of water, and a tablespoon of Epsom Salt. I then poured this around the base of the squash plant in the worst condition...yellowing (yellow blotches amid bright green healthy leaf tissue) and curling leaves and what looks like tiny burned areas around the edges of some of the new leaves... A few days later, some of the yellow areas have turned green and there are even a few new leaves coming out that are not curling up - where as before all the new leaves coming out were curling up like potato chips. On another squash plant with the same issues, I just made an Epsom salt and water solution and poured it around the base of the plant. It too may be getting better - it has some new leaves coming too, and for the first time, they are not curling up. I've been attempting to establish whether the problem is a lack of Calcium or a lack of Magnesium...since I've read that Magnesium helps plants absorb calcium...perhaps the calcium is there, but the plants are having trouble extracting it from the soil? I will wait a few more days to see if they both (or just one) improves...I also have back up squashes to replace them. If the original squashes recover, I will have double this type of squash - Waltham Butternut...my favorite!

Gary, thank you for another very educational video! However, this conflicts with another video that you've made. What is a better solution to cure mid-season BER. A slurry of water and lime or eggshell dust dissolved in vinegar? And can I spray either of these mixes on the foliage, for potentially a quicker absorption? Thanks Gary!!
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 6 лет назад
Either actually. The slurry should just be used 1x and I do that for the mid season emergency on the roots but don't use it on leaves. The eggs shells can be a foliar feed. Those are organic but I sell calcium nitrated on my seed shop. It is 100% the best and fastest. Foliar feed and and root drench. Nothing but free calcium. It is made by reacting calcium carbonate and nitric acid. Just like eggshell and vinegar but not classified organic. I just give options for people as they like to do different things. Only one choice is needed though.Please check out my seed and garden shop at www.therustedgarden.com
@viclee1114
@viclee1114 6 лет назад
Gary, thank you for the quick response! So if I understand you correctly, I should do both a root drench and foliage spray. Root drench with a lime slurry (as described in this video) and a foliage spray with either the eggshell/vinegar mix or calcium nitrate. Thanks again! My family will appreciate the rescued tomatoes.

Hello, I really appreciated the way you gave so many options to fix BER, some organic, some not, not immediate, some long-term... I have a question: do you know if some varieties of tomatoes are more susceptible to BER? I have 5 varieties of tomatoes this year, and only 2 of them are having a problem, even though they get the exact same amount of water all the time. So I'm wondering if those two types (Brandywine and Tie-dye) just need more calcium than others...
