If you get a BLACKLIGHT/ULTRAVIOLET flashlight and inspect your plants after dark, they will glow in the dark a bright lime green..! Very easy to spot and a pair of needle nose pliers works very well to pull them off of the plant and crush them in half..!

I've got a few of them causing damage to my pepper plants, as a first-time grower this video really helped. before I saw this video I would snip the plant at where they were, one so I could show my kids, and second I would place them at the bird feeder we have where a lot of bluejays and finches make short work of them.

Haven’t tried it, but have heard that interplanting basal helps a lot, with the idea that it makes it harder for the Sphinx moth to detect the “tomato plant” smell and lay the eggs. Also just looking for the droppings, or black light at night, works pretty well….both stick out. I find them super creepy, and I am fine with snakes, spiders, mice, rats,etc…so the scissor method is a bit much for me. I do use scissors, but usually cut the leaf or section of stem they are on off…and dump them over the fence away from my tomato area.

@CountryLivingExperience

You can eat from it. They are not harmful to you, just the plant. Do what you have to do to save your tomato plant. They can eat an entire tomato plant in just a few days. Then you will not have any tomatoes.

I can't remember which RU-vid channel it is, but they recommend planting various types of Basil. The scent of Basil is strong enough to confuse various inscect pests, importantly, this includes both the Tomato and Tobacco Hornwirms. I have no first hand experience with this method of Hornwirm control. Given the potency of the aroma of Basil, it makes sense. For the best results, plant the Basil in close proximity to your Tomato, Pepper, and other plants that the Hornwirms target. Good luck and enjoy...

It's sor ta sick to clip them in half like that, but they shouldn't have come! Last summer I had those things and MOST of the SUMMER was spent clipping worms in half and very little harvest at all! Discouraging. 15-20 every morning and evening: NW Arizona. The moths love it here.

LOL. I found this video and put it to use. I was trying everything and not slowing these hornworms down. I got a black light flash light, and a pair of scissors and went down two nights in a row scissoring them. Problem is now took care of. I am wondering if it leaves a warning system or something because no more have appeared. I had tried everything until this. This won the war. My tomatoes are producing heavy again. Last night I went down to the garden again to check, all clear, and thought I will find that video and say THANKS!!!!!!!!!!

I alsays thought it is crazy, that we dont ever see a Tomato horn worm unless we have and plant a tomato.. then BOOM, they appear. Its like, where the heck are they all those years I never had any tomato plants? What did they eat and why didnt I see them? They appear when tomatoes do or what? Wild. A chicken run around the garden could keep the bugs out, maybe, if done right.. perhaps not. Cheers!

One day: I have 0 hornworms, and an amazing tomato garden on my deck in planter boxes. The next day: I have like 10 hornworms spread across all 8 of my tomato plants! I tried using scissors to cut their heads off, but they just keep coming and obliterating my tomato plant leaves. What do i do????? I already purchased a uv blacklight to see them better, but how do i mass kill them???? Luckily theyve only just started, and not too many leaves have been destroyed though.

Instead of going crazy just pick them off and put them on Datura plants. I have a stand of Datura and I transfer them there. They grow into hummingbird moths and pollinate half my garden. It’s not like you were going to eat the tomato leaves anyhow.
@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience 2 года назад
This comment is uninformed. The hornworm will completely kill a tomato plant if left unchecked. If they eat all the leaves the plant will die. They also eat the tomatoes. Any benefit of the hummingbird moth pollinating is completely negates by the hornworms destruction. There are a myriad of other pollinators to attract that are more beneficial and not destructive.
@MrDeathpilot
@MrDeathpilot Год назад
Did you know that pet stores sell these as feeder insects at up to $5 each? You're throwing away money. A smart person would be raising hornworms instead of tomatoes.

@alabamathrifter365
@alabamathrifter365 Год назад
That’s the easiest way to do it. They are ugly and a lot of people are scared of them because they have a “horn”. They are harmless to people though. They don’t bite you or stab you or sting you with horn either. Simply pull it off the tomato plant and squash it, works every time. I used to use a stick or something to knock them off the plant and then just stepped on them. But later learned that they can’t hurt you. So now I just pull them off the plant and step on them.

You might want to reconsider hornworms, when they turn into moths, they pollinate your plants. Bees are dropping like flies. Seeds are cheap, grow a patch just for the hornworms
@CountryLivingExperience

I have plenty of other pollinators. Hornworms are just too destructive. The benefits do not outweigh the negatives.
