Not out of control, but we got a massive hail storm that oblitered 80 percent of the leaves. Luckily I hadn't snipped the suckers in a couple weeks, so I did a ton of trimming and the solid deep roots have got those suckers growing like crazy. It went from nearly bare 4 ft stalks to some respectable growth pretty quickly. Like a week and I have some flowers already. Not quite starting from square 1, more like square 6. That deep root structure and remaining suckers have saved the day. Love your show and thanks for the tips.

This video is timely. My tomato plants are at least six feet tall. Three side by side and a jumbled mess! Still waiting for tomatoes on two of them. I will go in, tomorrow, and cut the crossing leaves and see where to go from there.

Mine are growing very well and I've kept it pruned as I go. Lots of fruit. I just wish some would start to ripen because I'm getting anxious and really want to eat some😅😊

I have 6 varieties growing. I purposely planted blueberry tomatoes and Super Sweet 100s so I could harvest them while the larger tomato Heirloom varieties take their time. One is producing 1-2lb tomatoes each!

QUESTION - My wife planted 10 plants in a 3ft by 13ft bed... Dang, it's a mess. I'm thinking she should prune the plants on the inside of the bed to open up some sun and air flow?? Good / Bad ?? This is only 2nd year gardening for us.
@ffs6158
@ffs6158 Год назад
Mine are very shrubbery like, 7 feet tall but most of the vines are horizontal now, lol. I just keep hacking out leaves to keep airflow and removing anything diseased and the production is crazy. I don't prune them down too much because I need the shade on the fruit and it reduces yield. Plus I don't want to be spending every day pruning, I dont know how people who do single stem have time to do anything else if they grow more than a handful of plants.

My indeterminate tomatoes were looking pretty wild.. One thing I did last year and am doing again this year is making sure I have no leaves around the bottom 12 to 18 inches of each plant. The splash back from the soil was causing fungal blight on some of the leaves. Some of the other things I do are to go ahead and prune off any lower leaves that look yellow or spotty, prune off any leaves at the main stem that want to grow down, prune the suckers, and I only water and fertilize at the soil level. The humidity here is really bad so I avoid wetting the leaves except for the H2O2, aspirin, and baking soda sprays. I also have them planted in the root pouches, on a custom built platform, and I am using a cattle panel this year to stake them. My determinates need a totally different treatment, lol. I cringed when I saw the chamomile on the ground! I am growing it for the first time this year, purpose of making teas and medicinal treatments. Mine do not look as healthy as that one, lol. Thanks for sharing some really great info! And thank you for letting us see the Farm garden and how it is progressing!

You sent me some golden brandywine tomato seeds last year, and at my location 9400ft and central Colorado zone 3/4, they are really taking off this year. thanks!

I prune my leaves constantly each year for proper airflow, plus I pull off most of my suckers once they get taller, therefor keeping mine from getting out of control. Spacing them 3 to 4 feet helps prevent diseases. Leaf footed bugs is what I fight with on them each year.

Its been 100-105+ degrees for a few weeks here in 8b. Between the pest/critters and disease, my tomatoes look terrible. Bout ready to pull them. I've taken so many leaves and vines, its naked. I started new cherry tomatoes to replace them.

QUESTION: the H202 spray an aspirin spray has done wonders for my tomatoes, I was dealing with some fungal issues but they look right now. When do you switch to baking soda spray? Do you use that on different plants like swash or do you also use it on your tomatoes? If so, when do you use the Hydrogen-peroxide and what do you use the baking soda? Another question, I have been dealing with a shot hole disease on my peach trees for two seasons now. I have been spraying copper and another product called Plant Guard rotating it according to the recommendations by the manufacturer since early spring. Many leaves are falling off by the day and the fruit is growing and looks good but I’m concerned about getting of the harvest as I continue to lose leaves. I’ve had copper rust and other issues with leaf spots on my apples, blueberries, and other plants like strawberries, the copper seems to have worked on those plants pretty well, but nothing seems to help my peaches, do you thinking the baking soda spray could help?

I’m a novice gardener growing everything in containers on my deck because it’s the only viable space for many reasons. I’ve got 7 beautiful tomato plants full of green tomatoes, and I’ve been good about removing the lowest leaves for light and air circulation. But I’m enough of a novice that I am hesitant about pruning them back harshly like this. I know it’s the best for a good harvest, but I can’t help feeling like I’m hurting the plants somehow. I’ll try to be a little more ruthless I guess.
@ffs6158
@ffs6158 Год назад
Dont be scared, they can take a very thorough hacking and will come back better. Especially with the lower/older leaves, get rid of them immediately when they start to not look 'fresh'.

I don't prune mine and always get massive harvests. I've learned I can garden how I want to with fantastic results, I break so many " garden rules", experiment on your own.

Those are 4x8 beds with 8 plants? It would make sense. I tried too many with square foot gardening. This year I tried 3 rows of 6 in a 4x8 bed, it's still too much if I let a lot of suckers grow for determinate plants. I may try 2 rows of 6 each next year....I really need more garden space!
