Peppers like to hold hands! I now put up to 3 peppers in a large pot that would only handle one tomato. And my serranos planted like that have about 100 peppers on them cookin' away.
I tried two peppers per 5-gallon bucket this year and they seem happy so far. Already harvested Hatch and shishito chilies. "Blister", don't spank, the shishitos.
Make sure y’all put a few screws into each metal band on the barrels. As the wood dries out from not having whiskey in it and being in the sun it will eventually drop the bands and split open unless you secure them.
Agreed! If you let the soil dry out or leave the barrels empty the staves will dry and shrink away from the metal rings, and the barrel will fail. It won't hurt that oak to give it a shot of water when you are hand watering nearby.
Hey guys, been using wine barrels for years......you need to put screws into each ring around the top ring and 4-6 on the bottom ring....will last for years. Good Luck
Boy your garden is looking amazing. I would not get tired of walking around viewing what is happening daily. Oh! Silly me, I do that daily in my veggie garden lol. Blessings from Australia ❤️
Call me a redneck but I would have elevated those barrels on a single layer of bricks to protect the bottom and allow good drainage. You could probably get several years of use.
After watching, I’m going to add three more sweet pepper plants to my raised bed. I didn’t think about their friendships they like to have and put them too far apart. Sweet!!! To the plant store!
I have 4 of those Whiskey Barrels and I love them, I have my Raspberry and Blueberry plants in them. I think I want to get 2 more. Great video. Showing you both love from Riverside County.
At the end of a season, we give piles if tomato vines with various stages of tomatos to our chickens , because we end up with sooooo many some years and can't even give them away at that point. The chickens won't touch the leaves, but they go crazy over the tomatos. Chickens typically won't eat plants that are not good for them.
The half barrel is what I put my raspberry bush in. I’m hoping to get one for each of my blueberry bushes and another two for Yukon gold and sweet potatoes.
I feel like I have a totally different tomato sucker strategy, if I had a huge sucker down low that I somehow missed I instead grow two lead tomatoes and trim everything else, so two almost full sized vines coming off a single stem close to the ground. I saw a few commercial farms going for the twofer and figured I'd mix it up if I missed any suckers early on. So far it has been very productive
I do this as well. I keep the first lowest strong sucker, and end up with two strong leaders. Later in the season I might let other suckers grow as they usually put out flowers quickly in the hotter months.
Hobby Lobby here in Louisville had the cheap wooden bushel baskets on clearance for $2 each. Reminded me of your barrels. I figured for one season why not and planted my potatoes in them. Worked great, potatoes look great and kids are excited to help harvest.
I single stem tomatoes for the first 3ish feet then I double stem until 6 feet. After that, well, I'm short hahaha so they do what they want from there.
I’m in southeast Missouri and my tomato plants are taller than me already! 🍅🌱👍🏻 Just starting to get my first ripe cherry tomatoes. I planted so many tomatoes I’m trying all the trellising methods, cages, Florida weave, cattle panel, and even a huge beefsteak tomato i over wintered in a southern window, (fresh tomatoes in April was awesome) got transplanted in ground and I’m letting it vine along the ground to see how that goes. It’s got about 10 suckers about a foot tall with flowers, so I’m expecting another harvest.
Root those huge suckers! Not only in water but in a domed flat of moist potting soil! Within 2 weeks you have entirely other plants...without any rooting hormone...you have enough beds and enough time in the season. Wow your backyard looks great! If they weren't cut in half, you could get a second pull from good whiskey barrels by filling them two thirds full with boiled water, and rolling them around for 2 weeks in hot sun...drain, strain, bottle and cap 140 proof. Cheers 🍸🍷🌄
Didn’t know tomato leaves were toxic. My chickens would go crazy over my cherry tomato last year. Put chicken wire around it, they still managed to get the leaves. They were fine
Did you tour Jack Daniels? Our climate here in TN is very different from yours in San Diego. The distillery is interesting, as is the history and the area around it is gorgeous.
Love the crowded pepper idea. I have wine barrels that I converted into self watering containers - they work amazing! I have 3 peppers in one and was concerned that would be too crowded, but the seem quite happy.
I’ve got a couple of those JD whiskey barrels. It’s so crazy when they’re in the store they really do smell like whiskey 😂 We’ve had ours a couple years but had to screw in the bands early on because they were loosening. They’re also on a layer of bricks. But they’ve held up well! I plant pollinator flowers in them :)
Not certain how much that bottom straight string did to clean it up. I would have at least woven the poles to add some tension. Kevin, Jacques was just reminding you he's staff after your long vacation.
Lol 😂 you guys are silly I love it. Thank you for the awesome content! I picked up some Jalafuego seeds by Botanical Interests today!!! I’m excited to see how they taste 🤤
I bought the power planter from Amazon and it works fantastic for mixing soil. It cuts my usual way of doing it in my gorilla cart by 2/3 in time. Thanks for showing the power planter you inspired me to buy one.
I love whiskey barrels for planting. Are those pink hollyhocks near your tomatoes? They are so pretty. I was thinking of planting hollyhocks near my chain link fence.
I'm watching this vid with my baby daughter and she's enthralled by you guys! Trying the weave technique this year for the first time too - let's see how that goes. Keep doing what you're doing!
love how the homestead is looking! but i must say, i’m not sure if you were joking for the dragon staff bit but native hawaiians are p much begging people to stop going on vacation there because it is pricing them out of their homes and resulting in the destruction of the ecosystem there. there are many irreplaceable endangered critters in hawaii! i’d suggest to go somewhere else for vacation next time. (i’m a longtime fan, not just a random troll!)
Vacation?! I hope you restored yourself and recharged your batteries, because we're counting on your gardening entertainment to get us through the summer. Be well. Thanks for all that you do.
Have you guys ever heard of sweet potatoes getting sun scald? My sweet taters look really bad after this past week in NC, all brown and shriveled. I water almost every day too -Sincerely, Confused
Your garden is absolutely awesome Kevin! I love your channels. Question: do you ever have problems with slugs in the garden? If so, any solutions? Been trying to get into gardening and sustainability but the slugs are kill me😭
If you have the money for it you can buy cupper wire and fence off your beds with it in slug height. The cupper poisons the slugs due to something about their blood and slime. If you have raised beds you can also get slug fences that go on top and create a barrier they can't climb around if you do not want to kill the slugs
Don't give chickens green tomatoes either, they are also poisonous. They can only eat tomatoes that are completely ripe. But they love cabbage and broccoli leaves, and they are really good for them. Mint leaves floated in water help to keep them cool during the hot part of the summer.
do you buy garden soil, or are are you self sufficient ? I am not happy with Kellog's potting mix as most of my crop was stunted. Anyone else have trouble with bad soil ?
I have a couple of questions. I was looking for your drip tape video And the video where you show amending your soil and add the mykos to each plant hole. Can you post those ahsin or send a link thanks
