Tomato Taste Review of 22 Varieties (Part 1) 

I had a very similar experience with tomatoes. I hated fresh tomatoes my whole life until I started growing my own a few years ago. And wow! What a totally different world of flavor. It’s so cool that I get to experience all of these flavors in my backyard- I can’t find these unique tomato varieties in the store or at my local farmers market 💜

Tasty evergreen and Hillbilly potato leaf are two of my favorites after a couple of decades of growing a garden. Only green tomato I find worth growing. The Hillbilly is a gorgeous strippy tomato. I'm a zone 5 b in Wisconsin.

For a green tomato you should try Reinhard's green Heart. Beautiful big heart and the flavor is so good. Sweet and big flavor. And very productive and early at my place.

I just recently got my giant crimson seeds that I ordered in the mail it's a little late in the season for me to start them so I'm going to save them for next year😊

Green tomatoes are harder to tell when ripe, when you start seeing pink on ananas is when it should be picked. Green giant is ribe when it starts turning yellow green color. Thanks for taste test looking to pick some new tomatoes and this helps a lot.

Great taste test. Thank you for the share! I'm always searching for the perfect cherry, paste and beefsteak type of tomato. My perfect trio so to speak. I grow about 8 different ones each year and the search continues. I have Hungarian Heart seeds in my collection so it'll be on my 2023 grow list. I'm also gravitating towards the ones with purplish hues but stay away from the ones that look like they were grown downstream of some type of nuclear/chemical incident. So... the pretty ones for me. Glad you grew the ana noires because I know not to grow that variety now lol I must add though don't give up on green tomatoes! The only one I love and grow every year is the Aunt Ruby German Green. It's a little acidic and I find it has a natural peppery taste going on and they're sooo good on sandwiches !

I'm in a similar growing zone and have had a lot of success with tomatoes. Hungarian heart is one of my favorites and I get great production out of them. I typically get 15 lbs plus per plant with that variety. I definitely think there are some things you can do to help boost the production and flavor of your tomatoes. I grow half my garden hydroponically and half in raised beds in soil. This has allowed me the chance to understand a tremendous amount about plant nutrition and the effects it has on flavor and production over the years. I don't know what type of soil you have or what you are feeding your plants, but I find that tomatoes thrive in aerated soil (most plants do) and require more than most people can give with traditional compost, etc.. I've found if soil can get muddy when wet, it isn't going to grow good tomatoes. Sawdust and shavings from maple or birch wood can be a great addition to aerate your soil. These wood species do not raise ph or excrete tannins. I mix my own custom nutrient blends, but a blend with a bit more potassium than nitrogen really works wonders, especially with the bigger varieties of tomatoes and a micronutrient mix is a must. Humic acid is also a key component in my feed schedule. These fruits would never develop the way they have through nature and what can typically be provided from the soil. This is why it is much easier for most gardeners to grow cherry tomatoes as tomatoes in their natural habitat are tiny little berries and much better geared to growing with typical levels of soil nutrients. Large breeds of tomatoes require a lot to grow so large while at the same time be productive. So many gardeners struggle due to the depletion of nutrients from the initial fruiting. The plants end up focussing their energy on those fruits and stop producing further. Once this happens in my experience, even the addition of fertilizer does not bring production back to it's full potential. You have to hit the ground running and keep momentum to get a massive crop The blossom end rot likely isn't a calcium deficiency in the soil. There is plenty of Calcium in almost all soil. You may want to consider a foliar feed of some potassium sulfate, epsom salt and aspirin a few of times throughout the season.. The results are like magic for fruit production to disease prevention. Overwatering is also a common mistake some gardeners make which is also a major contributor to nutrient deficiency. Just some thoughts! Happy gardening!

Nicely done! I did taste tests on all my snacking maters last year, this year I'll be doing some of the larger. I am somehow going to stuff 77 varieties into my backyard garden with all the other food I go overboard growing. People keep sending me seeds! lol. Hungarian heart is a fantastic tomato.

As a Spaniard who used to live in US I understand you completely, Tomatoes in the states have a rotten and chemical taste and could never eat market tomatoes. Spanish Costolutos absolutely knock the socks off 😃

I also wonder if the rotting effected the flavor of the Ananas.... the ones we had were sweet. It's been awhile, though. It could also be the face that it's green like you said. I'm growing it this year so I can remember the taste! 😊

I had similar experiences with the Giant Crimson (zone 4a Northern Ontario) and am disappointed to hear about the Black Pineapple but good to know so I won't plant 10 seeds like I sometimes do. We seem to have the same taste preferences in tomatoes.

Interesting review. Honestly, it goes to show you everyone has a different pallet I live not too far along lake so similar growing soils and conditions the ones you liked Giant Crimson, indigo apple. Genovise and DR W fell flat. Will not grow again. Great video my loved Ananas picked proper time, some superstars were red Mushroom Basket, siletz & jersey devil. Pink oxheart was another fun paste. 23 season testing more dwarfs and one indeterminate thornburns terracotta. By far found the from dwarf tomato project to be work horses and kept producing until October with fantastic flavor & didn't get sick. Rosella purple, ululu orchid, brandyfred, sleeping lady great plants. I couldn't believe how much & how long they they lasted. Definitely doing more of them vs larger heirlooms. Merry Christmas

I'm near you I'm over in Brook park and like I never liked tomatoes but everyone would always say that's because those are store bough and they were right , can't get my husband to get past tomatoes are not supposed to be psychedelic! But hey that's half the fun so if you haven't filled all your spots try wapsipinican peach or it my might go by another name besides wapsipinican but the peach it isn't really fuzzy but definitely has a texture and about a salad size so far it's my favorite not because of the novelty but it has good production and sweet not watery.

Hello! Good to meet you! It's rare to find someone who loves tomatoes as much as I do :) I've grown Isis for years. I've grown Dr. Wyche and like it. I've grown Kellogg's BK and it's a must-grow for me. I've grown German Pink and it also is a must-grow for me. I've grown Berry's crazy cherry and while it did produce like crazy the flavor was blah and I only grew it one year. I've grown Black Sea Man...but I prefer Black Krim, Black Brandywine, and Black from Tula. All the Brandywines do well for me and there is one in every color. For the cherry tomatoes, I like Chocolate Cherry, Snow white, Sungold, and occasionally Green Vernissage...but that one is more difficult because you have to touch them all to tell if they are ripe. The new variety I'm excited to try for 2023 is Polish. I've heard good things about it. :)

We had them and lots of trouble with the black pineapple and not our choice. Hopefully we will try that pink salad Lady get the tiny sniper to gently clip away the tomato you'll damage to many. If I have only 1 tomato it would be Black Krim Test our circle favorite "Midnight Snack" next season Thanks

Hands down the parks whopper CR is the best tomato I have ever eaten and produces like crazy

Just to add my favourite black/purple variety is called Black Bear followed closely by Carbon. I just wish the Heirlooms were more prolific.

Have you grown Paul Robeson and Carbon? I'm growing them this year, LOTS of them, and just want to get a grasp of what kind of taste I'm getting myself into.

Ananas Noire are really sweet don't taste like most green tomatoes I can eat green tomatoes but are my least favorite I think if they turn out better and aren't so ripe you would probably like them but everyone has different taste

Our favorite salad is Midnight Snack and our circle of friends If I only raise one because it the easiest slicers by weeks and best producer and wife's favorite for all reasons except salsa and mine second favorite but for Black Brandywine and problem with black Brandywine for growing problem. Black Krim will be the last tomatoes if I grow but one plant.
