One of the most beautiful buildings that I have ever visited. The only place that I have been that tops it, is also in Ireland, Sceilg Mhicíl, a wonderful majestic island off the south-west coast. Well worth a visit for anyone travelling in the area. A must.

This is astonishing. For an island so small to have something so ancient and mind-blowing, and the average Irish person is forgetful of it. This is our Pyramid of Giza. Be proud of it. Christianity has nothing on the people that built that!

Just read Martin Brennan's book on New Grange and other sites in Ireland, The Stones of Time: Calendars, Sundials, and Stone Chambers of Ancient Ireland. Ireland has an amazing history of megalithic monuments.

I saw this in 2001. A place of mystery and magic. The most memorable moment was when our tour guide, (after briefly warning us) TURNED OFF THE LIGHTS. It was only for a few seconds, but you don't know what DARK is until you are underground. Then, they turned on a light that simulated the sun on the solstice shining through the slit in the wall, and it did light up the entire tomb. Amazing engineering for the time.
@haroldchurchspengler4960
@haroldchurchspengler4960 5 лет назад
Nobody knows the definitive answer to the meaning of the Tomb. It is speculated that it is a massive fertility site. The sunlight (in phallic symbolism)penetrates the chamber and this fertilizes the earth in preparation for the Spring. Thus it is a symbolic representation of the Sun God copulating with the Earth Goddess and producing bounty.

Nice place but the white quartz facade is fake. It had to be "restored" with the aid of concrete because the stones would not stand up on their own. No cement of any kind was found in the original excavation. There is no evidence it actually looked like this, with a flat front.

@MrFrank1968 .It's a support. You wouldn't want a 30 ton megalith crashing on your head,would you? Most ancient buildings have had to have some restoration some time in their history--if only to make them safe. Nothing made by the hand of man doesn't have some wear and decay over 5000 years...

There are quite a lot of drawings in Newgrange even found in caves in in Australia. But it could mean that someone in the 1900s saw this writings went o other parts of world and copied what they saw in far off places. When we see and encryption in say a cave in America we automatically think that the writings were put there thousands of years ago but it doesn't really mean that it could have been done anytime.

The most important thing to humans is serving, and they people were farmers, so they need a time to know when to sow the seeds for the following years crop. The light hitting the large stone and to go through the open gap to light up the room inside was an early calender to let the farmers know when to sow.
@cinnireseisri
@cinnireseisri 8 лет назад
+colum bannon For the winter solstice? That's not when you sow or harvest. That is what Samhain is about and it's a month earlier. No disrespect intended. It's a good theory, it just doesn't fit that's all. Since it's the "longest night of the year" I imagine it had more to do with the 'world of the dead' than anything else.

Why is it mysterious. It seems to me perfectly logical that it was a organized ritual place of gathering at times of death and astronomical events. After all their whole live and survival was ruled by agricultural needs.

@@messyties Wrong again. In fact, what happened was that some of the facade had fallen to the ground, so in order to decide how it originally looked, the archaeologists decided to allow the remainder of the facade fall to the ground, saw where it fell, and on seeing where each piece fell, were able to see where each piece original was on the facade. All the pieces are the original rocks. It was just a fixing the ancient site. Nevertheless, it's absolutely comical to suggest that this wonderful ancient site is anything less than that. The Pyramids of Egypt were rebuilt in parts, the Alhambra was almost completely rebuilt, Machu Picchu was taken back from the encroaching rainforest, stonehenge was rebuilt almost completely too, the great wall of China was rebuilt.......in either entirity or partially......and all MUCH more so than Brú na Bóinne......and like those places, Newgrange and the rest of Brú na Bóinne deserve their respect just as much. All of the stones, etc. are all part of the original building. These idiotic people who find fault by a simple piece of 'modernisation' built on these magnificent ancient buildings to help bring them back to their former glory don't have a clue about what archaeolgy is about and may as well just forget about visiting any ancient sites at all. They have all been 'modernised' in some way or another, either for modern health and safety reasons, or to help keep the building secure and standing for the rest of us to see how our predecessors lived.
