Hi Dominik from Germany here. I can empathize with everyone about the Styrodur. Normally it’s me watching and worrying how to work around specific materials not being available here. So it’s amusing to me to see the tables turned for once 😉

I guess you get used to what's available but there's pros & cons of both materials and ways to work around the cons. You guys should maybe ship each other foam

A tip for you: I use my air cleaner to dry anything. It sucks air from the 4 sides on the bottom and blows a powerful stream out on top. So placing anything from minis, terrain, foraged mushrooms, a wet cap on top of the air cleaner; it dries it out in no time. Ofc, it also cleans the air in your room 100% in 1 hour. If needed, you can use a charcoal filter to remove any odors in said room. The brand I use is called "blue".

dude, i love your channel. I dm a game every other Saturday. I used to play AD&D 2e way back in the day and i had just about every source book tsr made. fast forward 25 years and i find myself getting back into D&D with 5e, which i live, i feel like it most retains the flavor and complexity of AD&D while still being modern. WoTC did a good job of combining everything TSR did right with their modern approach to TTRPGs. I promise all that is relevant to this comment. So since i had long gotten rid of all my old source books, save for the encyclopedia magica, i found myself starting from scratch. Well, why not go digital. So, i bought the sourcebook bundle, a few modules and we were off the th races. After playing with some 3d printing and looking at the expense of dwarven forge and minis, i decided to go pure digital and use roll20 and a tv in house. I am very creative, very handy, have a lot of tools and as it happens, have a bunch of resin and silicone molding / casting material. After watching your channel i am once again inspired to go to terrain and minis. It will be fun to creat these things from foam. Thank you for your awesome inspiration and tutorials.

Neat video, thanks for that! Regarding making bricks with pencil - try to use some very thin and not really hot soldering iron - it will melt out the foam around itself - should be much quicker, and the final touch will be more natural.

Great video. I usually prefer to use a ballpoint pen instead of a pencil to draw lines and textures on foam (but I agree with you that laying bricks is less tedious). The ink acts as a lubricant that lets the pen slide over the foam. It might not be superior, but it's definitely satisfying.

Another helpful tip is to keep some paper towels nearby also. For rather than having to do another dry brushing after you do your black wash, is to simply just buff off any excess wash off while its still wet with the towels. Ive been doing that also for yrs and it seems to work as well it not better. Also while making icicles with a hot glue gun just use a toothpick or paper clip as you make each one to get the long thin lines and help reduce the big glob ball of glue at the beginning. Also before they made snow flock if you dont have any another good substitute that many modelers have been using since the 80s and 90s as myself was to just use Baking Soda which also looks like snow. And if Im not mistaken that is what they use to sell as snow flock.

I think it is good for you to showcase different one-shot set pieces from time to time because all of those ideas can be incorporated into other builds and it lets you explore themes/structures that you wouldn't otherwise do for reusable terrain. It can be the best of both worlds if done correctly.

I used some of your BMC style black mod podge (was $18 AUD! Damn!) on a building I was making from foamboard with one side stripped off to help protect the foam (carved in a brick effect). Worked out really well. Also made up some of your BMC black wash (this cost....more...), and I'm pleased with the results. Better than diluting paint with straight water. Mind you, that did help me win £50 in a terrain comp over in the UK. So that is still a decent low cost option. Still have yet to find a decent brown for a brown wash. Then I'll make up a batch of green wash. So many thanks my Canadian friend. 😉👍 (Edit: not complaining about the cost, it might be a bit of an investment up front, but will last for a long time. For those not aware, the cost of practically everything in Australia is higher than a lot of other places. Everything has to be flown or shipped in. That costs money, and of course, those costs are usually passed on to the consumer. It's just how it goes here in Oz. My mentioning the costs are just flavour text. lol)

Ive come back to this video because im preparing to get into this part of the hobby slowly with the idea that after we finally get out of this public health nightmare. Specifically for my own world. So all unnoted, all pieces i will design myself for any set pieces. And first will be dungeon tiles and acquiring a basic battlemat for the setting (arctic region of my world so snow/ice and maybe if i can find one that is two sided and is water on the back thatd be great.) Make some tiles and then begin story crafting and likely figure out my first piece beyond tiles. My goal for years end is to have my first 'chapter' of my campaign idea roughly outlined, and be inspired by flushing out the details of the small region of play intended to make some neat builds of terrain. Limited numbers since ive limited funds and limited spare time this year (fiscal recovery) but im super stoked to start. This is gonna be fun.

After looking at the spec sheet for Styrodur and at the one for Foamular, I think that if you can track down one of the higher density foamulars (250 or 400) it'll be much closer and Foamular 150 which is the normal stuff you find at big box stores. (the higher density ones are for things like under slab instead of in walls)
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 4 года назад
Yea I dug into the spec sheets pretty hard a while ago. The thing to look for is compressive strength, you need something comparable to the Styrodur compressive strength if you want similar stuff. For Foamula I think this was Foamular 600. DOW and basically every other manufacturer will also have comparable ones in their line. The problem is actually finding a place where an average person can buy a few sheets. I looked pretty hard and couldn't find it available at retail anywhere in North America. Its definitely going to be available through suppliers for the construction industry if you want to find a place that can get it, set up a commercial account, and buy a full pallet of foam. If you ever find a source to buy the higher density Foamular in small qty, let me know as that's info I'd love to pass on to people.

The snow trick is awesome, almost make me want to build snow tiles just to have a reason to use it. Though the UV resin trick makes some mighty fine icicles, have to say I prefer the look of the hot glue ones, since they're not fully transparent, they have that cloudiness that icicles (in Ontario at least :P) tend to have
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 4 года назад
After putting mine on I actually realized that the clarity was a bit of a problem as it makes them harder to see. I actually thought about putting a matt varnish on them. So yea, the hot glue may actually be better on the finished piece.
@TheRunesmythe
@TheRunesmythe 4 года назад
Another tip for those looking to reduce how much a dark wash darkens their miniatures/terrain; before applying the wash, seal the piece with gloss varnish, the glossier the better. This creates a very smooth, slick surface so that when the wash is applied it will be difficult for it to adhere to large, flat areas and will actually help to encourage it to settle in recessed areas. It also makes it easier to remove wash from unwanted areas; give it about an hour or so to dry, then use something like airbrush thinner or isopropyl alcohol to remove unwanted wash. Once you're done, you can then hit the piece with a couple of coats of matte varnish to knock the glossiness back down.
