Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered Review - The Final Verdict 

There is no input lag. The fact that you don't jump right away was designed that way on purpose. The game is designed around the tank controls. There is a delay so you jump after Lara runs over at least one square block. That way Lara will jump at the very edge of a platform making it so you cross the maximum amount of distance.

"I cant shoot the bats that are right in front of me"..... Is actively locked onto the dead bat in the back

1:05 "The platforming suffers from input lag or straight up ignoring pressed buttons" I can't help but feel like this is due to the reviewer not getting the mechanics that Lara can only jump with her step and not whenever the jump button is tapped. That's why the ingame tutorial Lara across all 3 games states to _hold down_ the jump button. You're in essence que-ing Lara to jump on her next step. I don't know about the Modern scheme. But the tank controls are actually flawless when you *_actually know_* how to use them. You will literally _never_ miss a jump and ledge if you learn how the game functions.

They should have had someone do the review who actually played the originals!!😂😂

Something a bit off about this review. For one, saying the camera misbehaves and ends up directly above your character sometimes is "exactly like the original trilogy of Resident Evil games" was hilarious as those games are famous for having a fixed camera. Secondly I had to chuckle at the "one level on the streets of Rome" over blatant / famously Venice footage. There's a lot to suggest that the reviewer is probably in their 20s and has had a quick Google of a few things to sound like they played the originals when it makes it pretty clear they didn't. The game looks to be like everything I wanted it to be and the team behind it seems to have done the impossible by pulling off the sort of remaster we're always asking for.

It's everything I remember and more. If you played the originals forget about reviews, it's a solid buy. A 10/10 for nostalgia.

You have to understand how to play the grid system and demands patience of the player. Modern gamers do not have patience like the reviewer.

This is what a remaster should be. Anniversary edition lost the charm of the original. To me this is perfect.

Grew up with the originals so the controls are exactly how I expected them to be! The tank controls I find are easier to use than the modern controls!I can see why people who never played the originals would be frustrated but I love the trip down memory lane! This trilogy in my opinion is better than the current trilogy

Simple TIP: stop shooting for less than a second so the lock on enemy will change, holding action button won't switch target automatically!

Well....I'm absolutely loving this remastered collection and find the modern controls to be a decent step forward. Part of the charm is wonky systems with jumping and grabbing ledges or spanning big gaps. I love all those things that made me frustrated when I was a kid cuz it made me try harder and I can honestly say, made the games more memorable. This game shines in its puzzles and level design imo and us older gamers who loved this series, we aren't disappointed 😊

Can’t wait to play especially now that it appears like the original in all its glory.

Just remember that when these came out 3d games were virtually brand new. Devs were still working out how to setup controls and cameras. Also realize that it will be uncomfortable for modern gamers initially, but you will adapt after an hour or so and then you're off to the races.

5:23 There is actually a very thorough tutorial on the the controls via "Lara's Home" in the menu.

Currently playing this game and loving it.

5:24 "The remaster also does nothing to explain the controls." Uh.... in your defense the game doesn't tell you to play Lara's home in Tomb Raider 1 before you start the adventures. But the tutorial for the controls are there. This reviewer clearly did not play Lara's Home in TR1, because they definitely tell you the controls there more than they do in the other games. And of course, nor did they return to her home-gym in Lara's home in TR2 or 3, because I'm pretty sure Lara covers controls there as well. This review is misleading and definitely not play the game in its entirety before giving it this undeserved score.

This is a game for fans of the originals but I wished they had more options with the controls and camera. Modern controls are great for running around but not great for combat or swimming

People are shitting on this review, but I think it's pretty spot on. The only people who are going to get into this remaster are those who liked these games when they were new, which didn't include me. They were janky then, and they're janky now. Everybody else should just play the newer games.

This remasters is a faitfully recreated experience where a lot of fans of thr old days were involved. Fans/Modders that actually know what they are doing. Giving it a 6 is so damn disrepectful for the work they have done.

So glad we have something that is truly being faithful to the original. Unfortunately, the original reviewer was sick and had a down Internet connection so they had to grab the janitor told him to write and record a review within an hour.

I played this game the other night & I just can’t seem to get on with it. I found it boring but in the 90s I absolutely loved it.

I played the original games when first released all those years ago. Magical experience back then with a huge leap in innovation that doesn't happen so often. But I've tried replaying them in recent years with mods etc... the gameplay just doesn't hold up. I'm older and don't have the patience. So I'll just keep my happy memories unspoilt!

Reviewer sees a whole city with water instead of streets and calls it "Rome"

I don’t know if it’s just because I grew up playing the games in the late 90s and early 2000s but it honestly baffles me as to how so many people seem to complain so much about the tank controls being clunky or frustrating. I feel because the levels are designed using a grid system that requires a lot of platforming, the way Lara moves around the environment actually makes a lot of sense. If I could master the controls by the time I was about 6, I feel a lot of people are being a bit harsh perhaps 😂. All in all Aspyr has done a wonderful job of giving the classics a breath of new life whilst maintaining the absolute magic and nostalgia of the original Tomb Raiders. New game developers, take notes!

Omg, what is this review? You can't review what is basically an up-rezzed game from the 90's like its the hottest AAA title of 2024. Of course controls are dated, Playstation gamepad didn't even have analog sticks back when this game was made!

Did the load thing this morning when I went to save after about 45 minutes of not saving...so I have to replay almost the entire 2nd level of TR 1.

My guy, the platforming and controls are what MAKE the original Tomb Raider games what they are. Precision platforming and puzzle-solving is the series identity and the original trilogy still does it best. The modern conveniences you want out of these games would take away what makes them special. Granted though, not having quick or autosaves does seem like a pain, but those are issues that can easily be patched.

You don't have to use the old tank controls, they did add in a more modern control system that you can swith to.

Hi guys I’ve figured out how to back step using using modern controls. Press ‘look’ button. I’ve got mine assigned to LB (Xbox)… when you press the ‘look’ button again, hold back. She will do a back step. 😁

Modern controls screw up the camera so bad in spots that its often better to go back to tank as crazy as that sounds

Still a lot more enjoyable than the newer Tomb Raider games or Uncharted, for that matter

Practice in Lara’s home. Get good scrub. These are PS1 games. Next time get some one that played the originals.

I’m really impressed with this trilogy remaster. However, it’s a bit disappointing that there isn’t an option to select levels. It looks like you have to manually save each level. Other than that, it’s very good. Unlike the PS1 ports, it includes the extra levels.

Jumps aren’t ignored or delayed, she jumps at a particular time during her run cycle, it helps with the tank control. Its weird to explain to someone who obviously hasnt played them before. Thats not a criticism, i would feel sorry for anyone playing it the first time. No game moves quite like it, but its like that for a reason. I recommend doing the tutorials at laras home, itll slowly fall into place. Beware those controls tho if you have no patience

We love these three parts of the game precisely for the excellent controls that are specially tuned for the square structure of the engine, the camera, the smart auto aim, the smooth transitions of animation, for example from running to jumping - you won’t see this in more than one game! helps to measure the distance for a jump, convenient inspection with a camera. The advantages can be listed for a long time... And they gave it all to an incompetent person who has no idea about this game!

I've been playing these games since the 90s. My only question is. How do I replay a level after I complete it? On the ps1, you can replay a level after completion, but this isn't giving me the option.

To anyone who's never played these games. The reason why you'll be struggling with the "modern" controls is because the game was never built around that scheme to begin with. Use tank controls. If you're struggling to get your head around how they work just go to Croft Manor. Lara talks you through how the control scheme works and believe me it does work. These older games have a much slower more methodical pace than that of the newer entries and thus require patience and accurate timing. There is no auto grab so if you mess up you're going to fall and most likely die with the consequence of having to reload your last save. There's no check points, no way marker, no skill trees, no eagle eye button, no NPCs and thankfully no constant chatter from the protagonist basically spelling out what you have to do at every step. Nope, this is propper Tomb Raider.

Watched the video until the very end and ran to the comment section with a large cup of soda and popcorn in hand, waiting for the REAL entertainment to start!! This review was sure to receive a torrent of backlash from OG Tomb Raider fans. I truly consider myself privileged having grown up on the game with a healthy obsession for the title. I thank the true fans who know every nook, cranny and corner of the gameplay and mechanics for defending Lara's honor.

You can correct the camera by pressing "LOOK" L1 to reset it's position back behind Lara. Also, the brain retains memories better through stress. If they just explained everything to you, how likely would you be to remember it without having to go back to a menu /inventory to check some ability fact sheet BS. The original tank controls are perfect, and Lara still feels as smooth as she did in the 90's. If you would all just take your time and learn how to control Lara and understand how movement works around the grid system, controlling Lara's movements becomes fluid and you'll be able to execute pinpoint accurate maneuvers with ease like us experts. Even in the 90's as a kid I never understood why so many people couldn't figure out the tank controls and gave up on such a a beautiful game.

i am not sure why i am watching reviews on this game because will still buy it just to relive those memories playing this game on the PS1. However the biggest disappointment is they only did 1-3 when last revelation with that Egyptian setting was the best.

It's a remaster dude, that game was made for people who want to replay the original games with some updated visuals. The mission was acomplished. If you expected a modern gameplay or next gen graphics you are in the wrong place, go play the survivor trilogy and you will be at home.

Grew up playing this with my old man… I was born in 02 but I have so many great memories with him in these games… he plays it religiously every year and it’s great to sit with him now as a man and enjoy the experience together… I will be getting this for him!

Just hold the buttons until she does it! Just remember to release the button too!

The original games WERE aggravating at times, that challenging aspect was kind of the point and a lot of the fun.

This guy clearly didn't play the tutorials, did not play the originals, did not learn the controlls, and got bummed cause the game was "hArD" and the controls were "uNrEsPoNsIvE". Imagine this guy playing darksouls 1 and getting sad cause he keeps storming at enemies in a hack and slash manner and dying.

It's a remaster, not a remake. That's how the camera was back then. That's how the controls were back then. The original ps1 controller didn't have thumbsticks!

The inordinate amount of criticism towards the tank controls and the camera movement is rather preposterous considering how much of a staple they were to the franchise for quite a while,and i thought the whole point was to keep the experience as close to the original as possible. I'm fairly certain you didn't play the original games. If the majority of people were able to adjust to the tank controls in 1996,then a gamer should be able to do that as well without issues.

I love the remastered TR games. I played them back in the day and got well and truly hooked. I tried playing with the modern controls but didn't like them. I much prefer the tank controls. I just love how they have visually improved these games. Still the same hilarious glitches etc, but that's what gives them their 90's charm. I've played many modern games since, The Last of Us being my favourites, but I will always keep coming back for more Lara. So pleased I bought the Remastered, loving the nostalgic joy ride!!

Theres no way this gets the same score as the gta DEmasters.

The goal of this project (and probably the budget allocated to it) was to bring the old trilogy onto modern hardware, cause most of the old games can be super tough to get to run decently with controller support. OpenLara is an opensource project that remade a brand new engine to play those old games, installing that helps... but this remaster packages all that in a ready to play package. And I think they involved OpenLara's folks into making this remaster As to the tank controls : it's like with resident evil really. Which is to say it's like riding a bike or driving a car : once you're used to it, there's tons of things your brain just does automatically. Once you're used to the controls, only the human enemies are still annoying (cause there's basically no dodging the ones with guns).

Terrible review, you just showed you have no idea what you're talking about! Just because you suck at the game and it's controls, doesn't mean the game is bad! These are not only great games but AMAZING remasters!

The fact that you where born 20 years later and have a different gaming experience does not take away the fact that the gameplay of these gems is still fantastic. All your complaints about camera movement and controlls, these we didn't have back in the day.Quite the contrarry.They where of the best at the time. And still to this day when i aply TR1 (once every a couple of years) nothing bothers me.

Hmm well I am an original player, I used to play when my sons were young boys, and they loved their Mom playing, and in fact my son just got these for me so I am really looking forward to playing them again, will be back with a bit more of a review once I have gone through them.......have fun Tomb Raiders

If you just let go of the shoot button, Lara will switch to another enemy. 4:43 - There's nothing wrong with the weapon tracking. 4:49 - "Lara will abruptly stop shooting". She didn't. The enemy went out of view of her guns meaning she won't shoot at nothing and waste ammo. 4:52 - The roll isn't used for dodging, it's for turning Lara quickly. 6:24 - "Streets of Rome". THE LEVEL IS LITERALLY CALLED VENICE! As for the rating, a 6 is downright disgusting!

The tank controls are part of the genius of the game

God bless this guy but he just doesn't understand this game. It's not for everyone but he makes out the controls to be unresponsive which just isn't true. The controls have a learning curve sure but they are completely responsive.

Jeez, what a lot of moaning. I thought the point was to keep the experience as close to the 90s as possible, with remastered graphics, and I loved it! We managed in the 90s with the controls and camera, so kids should manage now anyway.

I love how a game released 1 year prior (mario 64 ) had perfect controls and this one was (and still is apparently) a conepine in your rectum.

Never played the original and says you run around in Rome in tomb raider 2 but it is Venice something a proper tomb raider fan would know

Whilst I have the most recent two games prior to this, my Tomb Raider 'heyday' was 1996-1999 with the original 3. I never bothered with most of the games in between.
