I completed a review of the Tombow Irojiten Colored Pencils in the first year I started out on RU-vid doing Colored Pencil Reviews, all these years later, a few things have changed and my understanding of the Colored Pencil medium has got better as well as the fact I now add full pieces of art with every review. It was brought to my attention the importance of completing artwork with the products I review as opposed to the simple swatches, layer test and blending test I used to supply. At first I didn't see the importance, but now that I have added so much extra time and effort into adding art with every product I review, I can totally see the importance.

I love the packaging on these. I have the first volume. I think it used to be called rainforest. The pencils feel like luxury but I don't love using them. I do love looking at them tho 😆

They’re sooo pretty, but I think I need/want to buy the full 120 tin Polychromos which are like NZD $475 😩😩😩 instead of wasting more money buying different cheap pencil sets. I’ve been solidly watching reviews the last 2 weeks and my brain is swirling with so much pretty.... ugh!

@@cazkiwinz4300 good idea. I stopped buying sets as I always go back to my Polychromos. I found I was just wasting money. You can do what I did … but them open stock about 10 or so at a time. You will end up with the whole set

@@mandybarlow I had started doing that, I have 13 PCs atm now… but I just discovered that I can get the full wood box set for $300-$500 NZD cheaper on Aussie Amazon (they’re $700-$1000 here in NZ and only $300-$400 AUD …. which is a crazy/ridiculous/annoying markup!)

I am soooo happy that you posted this. I was so disappointed with the performance of these pencils.I didn't like them at all. The color payoff was just not what I needed or wanted and here I was with the whole set. They have sat on the shelf since I bought them. Pretty as the boxes are I just couldn't use them. It never once occurred to me that the paper made such a huge difference the way the pencil performed I am learning these things every day thanks to people like you! I will get the correct paper for them and give them another go. Thank you so much for this and ALL your videos!

Thank you for revisiting these pencils! They are some of my faves. They are my go to pencils for small detail work in my colouring books.There are some unique colours that I absolutely love like the grey toned ones. I bought the 3 volumes about 6 years ago. I now have to acquire the extra 10 to complete. Great review and I love the art work you did at the end.

Harry, thank you so much for your updated review of Tombow Itojiten colored pencils. Your early review of them was perhaps my only disappointment - or real disagreement ever, even - with your reviews. But that was just because I’ve always harbored a deep & secret love for my Irojitens. I’m really glad to see that, coming back to them, you now find them a bit better than before! However much I do love them, I admit there are some problems. Lightfastness, as you discussed, is a major one, and anecdotally, seriously challenged. It is rumored that Tombow execs have pegged Vivid and Fluorescent (!) as the best, though still less than lightfast. That sounds so crazy, I have to wonder… Layering, as you also say, is very much a function of the paper you use. On coloring book paper, Irojitens can be limited to as few as 3-4 layers. In that regard, imho, they’re somewhat like Derwent Artists’ - though I think they weigh in lighter even than Studios do. But I love harder pencils … e.g., I adore Caran d’Ache and the Luminance palette, but even for nature art, I do more with Lightfast, just because of texture. Irojitens also lack some basics in their palette - notably, white, as you pointed out. And, even though each group of 10 is more or less a “spectrum,” even the Vivid volume isn’t quite “Western primary.” But that’s for a good reason - because they’re Japanese pencils. Which is why Tombow has all of those beautiful pastels - and also, the “Dull” and “Grey” (read tinted AND shaded) volumes - colors that are hard to find anywhere else. And what gorgeous colors they are! A bit randomly, the texture actually reminds me a little of, not just Artists’, but also the colored pencils from NYC-based eco-friendly children’s toy company eeBoo (not in any way to denigrate Irojitens - eeBoos are impressively good for kid pencils), which I’m told have talc in them. (That info came before the “powder findings.” I haven’t followed up to see whether they’ve changed.) Anyway, just wanted to thank you again for circling back to these pencils - and for _all_ you do for us! Many, many thanks. And all the best to you & yours, Harry!

Thank you so much for all the hard work you put in to give us such wonderful information and the artwork you did with these pencils was amazing. I live in the USA and Dick Blick sells open stock for these here. To get the new 10 colors I bought a beautifully packaged set of 36 on JetPens. I will have some duplicates now since I already had the 90 but I don't mind having some backups. The 36 set might be an option for someone if they like the assortment and don't have any yet.

Today I was the winning budder on the 90 of these on Ebay, and I’m like a cat with two tails, I can’t wait to receive them! They are lightly used and cost me £75, which I think is a bargain for these! And thank you Harry, this review was one of a few that convinced me these would be a good match for me. I love my Polychromos and still dream of 120 Pablos 😀 And once these became easy to get open stock in the UK, I decided they would be great companions for those other hard pencils that I enjoy. Thank you for all the hard work and inspiration!

I found the colors included in Seascape make a nice supplement to my Polychromos, particularly the Florescent and Very Pale sets are great to add layers to brighten up or fade out other colors.

Thanks so much for the review and showing the new colors. I do own all 3 sets, and wasn't aware they had new colors. I wish they would of just came out with another box of 30 or at least 20. Or at least sold the 10 new colors in a cute box like the others are in.

I have these and love them. Plus the extra 10(bought on EBay from an Australian seller so are well travelled🤣). I think they are very underrated so ty for redoing your review 🥰🥰 I think now Cult Pens have started doing open stock it may help if people want to try them.

I love using mine in higher end coloring books. I had to learn how to use them first, but they blend beautifully with themselves and other brands.

Thank you so much Harry, you always bring us so much valuable information. I have the 3 sets of Irojiten. And I want to tell you how much I enjoyed your botanical painting. Some of us enjoy seeing colored pencil used to it's best advantage: showcasing it's value as an independent medium, and not as a mimic of other mediums.....which is how it is presented much of the time. It can stand alone. You did this and I love the piece. I am also grateful for your comments about paper, but Help!. I was very fortunate to get a set of Derwent Lightfast, just before pricing went up, and they should arrive in the next week. However, when I went to purchase the Lightfast Paper you suggested, it was so expensive I could never afford it. 12 sheets in a 9 x 12 inch pad is $54.90 USD, on Amazon. Yikes! So, can you tell me which paper you would suggest I use with my new pencils??? Even Claire Fontaine is $39.96 ($40) USD. Too rich for my blood. Any ideas where paper you would suggest for the Lightfast could be found state side? With Brexit and Covid, Jackson's is more expensive than our US stores and UK products are as high as Caran d'ache in many places here. Sorry for the length of this comment but I'll bet lots of your followers would appreciate knowing more about the paper. Thanks so much, Harry.

Amazon Japan sells the 10 new pencils as a set, that's where I bought mine from, they cost £23.37 including all shipping, taxes and import duty to the UK. Not sure I can link to Amazon, RU-vid is funny about URLs but you do have to have a separate account on Amazon Japan, not your default Amazon one.

Hi Mirrigold, thank you so much for your comment and helping others interested in getting the 10 extra colors in a single set. Can I ask if that set came with a Tombow Mono Eraser? I only ask because I seen a set of ten colored pencils from Tombow on Amazon but there was no listing of the actual colors and that set had a Mono Eraser in it and something else Tombow related. They are so pretty. But I had to put mine in a case because I don’t have enough space for all the volumes to be open and rooting through them. They are OK in some colouring books, but absolutely no use on smooth toothless paper. The colours are gorgeous.

Yeah you are spot on Sue, these pencils are very much dependent on the paper. Some pencils just work on any paper, smooth or textured and others perform particularly better on a certain surface and the TomBow Irojiten are one such pencil.

Great review! I notice that the Colored Pencil Society of America specifies Tombow Irojitin as a lightfast brand, on their website. I have these pencils and I also have Rembrandt Lyra. But I'm new to colored pencils, so I'm wondering how you think these compare to Lyra?

Hullo Harry! Thank you again for creating a review so informative about the product that if anyone was sitting on the fence about a purchase of the pencils your review gives everyone the information needed for a decision. I have no desire or true need for these sets and I will spend my money on the pencils I already enjoy. I believe that if you own more than 4 or 5 brands you might be considered a collector of art supplies and there is nothing wrong with that. Maybe you have an Art channel like The Frugal Crafter and Harry and having every brand that you can get a hold of benefits your viewers and subscribers, these are great reasons for having more sets. I have just purchased some Derwent pastel pencils, I only have the CarbOthello pencils and they have worked well. I got the Derwent after watching Lindsay’s videos and wanting more than the 60 offered by the current brand I have. I do have black and white Pitt pencils from Faber Castell because they are open stock and Emma Colbert uses them as well! They also offer just the 60 pastel pencils. Does anyone have a good factual reason for owning more brands of pencils?? Not just wax VS oil or pastel, watercolor pencils but several brands of wax or oil based pencils? I am curious, anyone? I do wonder if I will get a response……….

I have to be honest with you, if I was just an artist and not primarily an art product reviewer, I would probably only have two or three brands of colored pencils, I might have one or two Pastel Pencils and a nice selection of Watercolour Tubes. There is no doubt about it, I do not need the pencils I own, which is the reason I do so many giveaways because I can't in good faith allow good art products to sit on a shelve doing nothing. My position is very unique and I am incredibly privileged and know this. However, looking at things from the other side of the fence, if I had a lot of disposable income and chose art as a my passion as I have, I well dare say I would get caught up in a collection of supplies. I am not sure I have answered your question properly, but I think we all love to surround ourselves with beautiful things and for artists those beautiful things are pencils, papers, watercolors, pastels, pigments etc as opposed to diamonds, fast cars etc lol.

Before they come out with a 100 set, ( as most people have the 90 already) they SHOULD come out with a box of the 10. Please let us know when this occurs. I am in the USA. (I did go to that pencil shop site, and saw only #3 thru #10 available open stock. No #1 or #2)

Occasionally she runs out of stock from high demand but the stocks are always replenished real fast, Emma is excellent at supplying open stock pencils.

@@TheArtGearGuide not sure if I could purchase from there, need to pay in US dollars, and have shipped to USA. I am going to contact the biggest USA Art shops known to me and contact them about the 10 colors. A good project for me to spend tomorrow doing. I have had the 90 for at least 3 years.
