My dad was a Maine trucker and a friend of Dick's. He hauled down through the Haynesville woods many times. We sang this song at my Dad's funeral in 2015.

My grandfather drove for the state of Maine probably mid 40s into the 70s. There was a few times Dick would stop by our farm and shoot the bull with grandfather over coffee. I don't remember all the stories they shared but I remember being fascinated by them.

My Dad played this song on the 8-track when I would ride along with him in his 1967 Kenworth 318 Detroit. Loved the sound of the Jake brake. Great song and great memories!

Do you remember when his Son was his drummer ? That kid could sure make those drums talk. I also met up with Dick at the lake. We are both from the same hometown of Fort Fairfield, Maine

OK... True story.... we're on our way back home to Boston from Prince Edward Island and after crossing back into the States at Houlton, ME we stop at the Irving and there's this old guy with a truck selling potatoes in the lot from a farm in Haynesville, ME. I happened to have my Autoharp with me and took it out, sat down at the picnic table, and sang this song for the guy. He gave me bag of potatoes for free. Made his day I think. Naturally, I had to live the adventure and instead of driving down I-95, just went down Route 2 through Haynesville. "When you'e loaded with potatoes and you're headed down... you gotta drive the woods to get to Boston town..." Seize the moment. Loved Dick Curless!!!

Was a trucker with my own 'bilt. V8 kitty and coming through Maine you taped an egg to the loud pedal. Dan Fulkerson wrote this and the great baritone of Dick Curliss put a stamp on it. I have hauled baddados out of Maine. What a beautiful state. No my little Shannon in the pic has been gone to Heaven for two years. I cry for her everyday. I am 75 now and trucking is just a memory. To put my hands on a 6+4 again and run like the wind with the my Shannon Burns you see there with me. She has been gone to Heaven for 2 years now, and all I have left is a hole where my heart used to be and tear stained memories. God bless. Her Denny.

All you big and burly men who roll the trucks along Better listen, you'll be thankful when you hear my song You have really got it made if you're haulin' goods Any place on earth but those Hangsville Woods It's a stretch of road, up north in Maine That's never, ever, ever seen a smile If they'd buried all the truckers lost in them woods There'd be a tombstone every mile Count 'em off There'd be a tombstone every mile When you're loaded with potatoes, and you're headed down You've gotta drive the woods to get to Boston town When it's winter up in Maine, better check it over twice That Hangsville road is just a ribbon of ice It's a stretch of road, up north in Maine That's never, ever, ever seen a smile If they buried all the truckers lost in them woods There'd be a tombstone every mile Count 'em off There'd be a tombstone every mile When you're talking to a trucker that's been haulin' goods Down that stretch of road in Maine they call the Hangsville Woods He'll tell you that dying and going down below Won't be half as bad as driving on that road of ice and snow It's a stretch of road, up north in Maine That's never, ever, ever seen a smile If they buried all the truckers lost in them woods There'd be a tombstone every mile Count 'em off There'd be a tombstone every mile
