Tommy Wright was a student of mine in High School. I was a 28 yr old school rapping teacher. I defeated him in freestyle. We became friends. I remember when he told me about his rap ambitions. He came to me to do the photography for his first album. We shot pictures at Whitehaven Mall area. This was in 1992. I was a substitute teacher whom they called "Mr.T". Tommy Wright is considered a Memphis pioneer Rapper. I am proud of his accomplishment. He worked hard. He earned everything he got through grit and grinding.
@@cruxmind my stupid, high ass just sat here open mouthed like "bro tommy wright was not a 15 year old girl" and didn't realise what a moron I was until I saw your comment
A lot of people are missing why Beyoncé has all these samples on her new album. She’s giving shine to these artists that don’t get the recognition they deserve. I had never heard of Princess Loko before and I grew up on 80’s hip hop. This song is dope.
@@lukekidson9777 the thing about back in the day is music distribution was slower than it is today thanks to the internet. thats the main reason why bangers out of memphis probably didnt get a lot of attention without the help of a record label. now with the internet we are finally able to listen to these gems
Mmmmm …I’m from Memphis. I knew of her talent and I’m glad she gave her respect Rip Princess Loco…. She went back to the 90’s Memphis is so influential in the game now
Westside Park heights. Us Baltimoreans love deep rooted southern hip hop. It's in us especially those who grew up in the 80s and early 90s. Just look at how we feel about Mr. Don't Play, Project Pat.
@@barrackhussein464 she on the 4 corners of earth. Waiting for Tommy to pick her up to rob a bank. Running and gunning. Time is an illusion. We all at the finishing line.
Something I always loved about Memphis rap is that they always gave female rappers their shine and they proved they could hang with the best of them. Even three 6 has two female members and they both rock hard. RIP princess loko and gangsta boo
Yeah like no joke it's actually really insane. These guys were doing styles, beats and flows in the early 90s which only truly became popular like 2 decades later. They influenced even other country's rap style and other genres. Yet when people talk about the history of HipHop/Rap, it's almost never mentioned. The beats they use alone is absolutely crazy and just oldschool, simple yet so good, self made with simple machines, at the time where stuff like G-Funk was already going wild. These Memphis guys are true OGs. I cannot describe the appreciation I have for their music. Idk what was going on in Memphis during that time but the place really gave us some sick Hip Hop
@@Sweater04369 They even had influence on countries like the UK, idk if you heard of it but 'grime' is a huge rap subgene which was also quite influenced by memphis beats and styles, now it's an entirely own thing. It's really crazy man
A lot of y'all don't know Loko was only 15 or 16 doing these verses with Tommy this is that Box Chevy music here 90s classic Tennessee and Mississippi been bumpn Memphis underground
Not a massive Beyoncé fan but credit to whoever decided to sample this. What a way to honor princess loko's legacy, must be amazing for her family to hear her voice on one of the biggest releases of the year.
@@thagatdamchannel1642 I'M THAT GIRL, first track on her new album. Kinda cool that the very first thing you hear on Beyoncé's new album is Princess Loko.
@@smithywerbenjagermanjensen Thanks. Just heard it. She definitely put a twist on it. Tommy Wright got the writer's credit on the album, so I guess he wrote the lyrics and Loko performed it.
I didnt know about princess loko before listening to beyonce's album renaissance, but I was so intrigued by it that I had to come check out the song. Glad i did. this bangs
I get to pressed and pissed when people don't mention Memphis as a iconic rap scene we gave alot of people styles and culture but the city got overlooked so many times in the 90s and 2000s we've always been underground
0:01 - 1:34 I think I just fell in love, her voice is beautiful I love her country accent and she completely killed tommy on his own track, I’m extremely impressed
Memphis rap is an artform on par with the sound of Manchester alternative rock and Detroit soul-- you can hear the city in the music. You press play and for a moment you're there. And it's just dark...
Look mayne... hola at me, .....I PRIDE and I mean PRIDE my self on being able to call'em how you called this one..(which I had no clue was a sample) any ways I got this shit I been working on..,, hit me
The way princess loko pronounces her rhymes is incredible it sounds like she is just straight chilling on a couch spitting rhymes effortlessly and smooth
@@bles05 That's what so great about these Memphis tapes, the homemade production with cheap microphones/drum machines. Makes the music feel more "human" unlike these new artists
@@prosperity1715 I don’t kiss her ass unlike y’all do. She use messy mya voice, and she didn’t pay the barre family nothing till the his sister exposed her. So kick rocks.
Memphis and Houston are very underrated. Memphis in the past few years has been getting more and more respect. Houston has been rarely getting any love, but both of them are pioneer cities of Southern Hip Hop and Hip Hop as a whole.
Rest in Paradise Princess Loko. I miss you so much. You were my bestfriend and I still can't believe you gone. Just sitting here bumping your music and reminiscing of all the good times. Love ypu chic.Your bestfriend E da G.
This just popped up on my feed, and I'm just hearing this song for the first time, and honestly, I've already replayed Princess Loko's verse 4 times. She was so on best without taking a breath. Awesome.
I was high & sleepy when this was on my timeline. I’m glad i took a screenshot, so that i could check it out today. Because i had no knowledge that this song even existed. This MF sound FRESH! *RIP Andrea Summers AKA Princess Loko 🌹🕊️ - Signed 10/17/2023
im a 40 year old white square middle-class type guy from northern europe, yet this tune speaks to me somehow, is the chap still pimpin to this day? if so, i would feel very pleased
Princess was in her early teens when she dropped this. She might’ve not knew credits and royalties etc. I believe she was a writer but got played when it came to the money. Her legacy is heat
i can’t stress how much i love the fact that beyoncé used a lot of these tracks from the south including this one. southern rap and especially 90-00s never fails to give off some dark beats and i absolutely love them.
Everytime I hit play on Beyonce's latest album these young lady is the first thing I hear. I kept hearing "these mfs ain't stoppin me" or something, and had to Google. I absolutely can't stop listening, I need more!!!! #Respect
Hahaha they're prob jamming rn...on a real note tho, FBI is least of your worries. OTO is the name of the organization that runs most of the South (TN where this was made included). They're Satanists, and a lot more powerful & scarier than any gov-based losers like Alphabet boys lol. U wanna piss them off? Blast Gospel rap....fr lol
I remember when I first got introduced to Tommy Wright, I heard this song and was like “who is that girl!!?” Loko’s voice and flow is so destinct and raw! RIP Princess 💕
dude this shit is tight, the beat is ill, lyrics sound good, fuckin amazing what the industry pushes nowadays whack ass beats and whack ass hooks, this is the REAL shit, Guru said it the best
true because nowadays most music is recorded digital not analog like it was in the past that why you don't get a true warm genuine feeling in digital music like analog had in the past.
Abraham Palmer Glad you understand that "warm feel" of analog music. Been tryin'to explain that to folks for a long time, but I get looked at like I'm trippin'. 😂👍
2022 still bumpin'... Thank god for youtube an archive of great music. To be honest I never heard of Tommy Wright as I'm sure he was a local phenomenon, but again thanks to YT he world wide. Rap music forever! I'm 40 something OG years by the way!
Loko just ate this track and the oxygen around her. Edited 6/4/2020: “Don't have a frown on your face when I fall up in this place cause Loko is still pimpin'.” - Princess Loko Godspeed, Loko ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾
MyAccount217 good point lol, I changed my comment to reflect that. I honestly usually just listen to her verse because it’s so good (not to hate on tommy, she just murders this track). Anyway, it doesn’t take away from the fact that her name should be in the title
@@peacauve im aware she died but i figured she was just featured on a tommy track. however if tommy says its her song then she definitely should be in the title so people know
Beyonce brought me here. I'm surprised I never heard this song growing up with an 80s and 90s rap listening father. But, what a song and what a sample.
