6:06 When Degaulle arrived in power in 1958, he accelerated the decolonization process, launching local referendums in what remained of the empire ( with the exception of a few territories ).. It was basicaly : do you want to stay with France or independance ?
23:44 White flag jokes, those about French people surrendering, are considered real insults in France. Americans need to be aware of this because it degrades our relations (since these jokes appeared especially after the history of the war in Iraq/ The Americans did not do it or very little before that period). Even the Germans don't make this joke.
Jokes about France surrendering is common in East Europe ( Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Baltic, Russia). I think its because of propaganda that WE( Soviet or American) won the war, others was either helping or surrendering
To answer one of your questions, French colonies were never population settlements (except Canada, Louisiana and Algeria), people did'nt want to leave mainland France cause it was very rich and could feed everyone. Most of the territories France retained are mostly very low population lands so no independance movements.
14:41 Yeah but people had to fight for it to happen There was a time when looking through the trash of a supermarket was illegal and supermarket sprayed toxic stuff on their garbage so homeless people couldn't scavenge
Hi, I don't quite understand where the joke came from and what it means, and im sure I will have a good laugh once I do, can anyone please explain the joke?
It's interesting to see you compliment France because I feel like most people in France criticise it (I mean the grass is always greener elsewhere but still) and instead look forward to Germany across all political boards. People who lean more on the right envie Germany's economy and blame the French government for not being able to recover from the 2007 crisis as Germany did and value their hardworking mentality. Whereas people who lean more on the left would say France isn't ecologic enough compared to Germany and France should be more welcoming of foreigners like Germany was during the immigration crisis and not xenophobic like a lot of french people. Other notes on the video out of order: -don't worry for the parasite it doesn't transmit threw contact no gloves necessary (might be qualifying for r/woosh if so sorry). -It's normal you had a false impression of french demographic in Paris since it is the most diverse part of France with big communities of Maghrebin, African and Asian origins unlike in the countryside which is much more European. -Fun fact about the french love for Japan we are the 2nd consumers of manga and suchi (per capita) in the world after the Japanese. -Snails for those wondering aren't very tasty by themselves, they are cooked to be crispy but it is the sauce which comes with it which is really good. -The thing with Paris is that it was totally demolished and rebuild in the 19th century in order to make it beautiful and manage demonstrations and strikes more easily(not even joking search Haussmann's renovation of Paris) but I personally don't have an answer for the filth and poverty I can just say that I think half of the country's homeless people are in Paris. -Ba news supermarkets keep throwing away their produce with loopholes. Good news we banned plastic bags and straws and each class of french students as to elect ecological delegates to propose ideas to be implemented at the scale of the schools (tell me if you have that in your country I'm interested) -The "ban" on English worlds isn't really one the Academy Francaise is the one which decides what is "proper" but nobody listens to them. For the music, some will say it defends the french culture and helps local artists which is a recurrent theme in France. -For the breaks, long hour sleep, young retirement age, short weeks it is a direct consequence of the strike and riot culture in the country which I don't think is a bad thing, it allows people to defend their rights, and hey we're still the 2nd/3rd economy in Europe (the Uk is close enough that the number 2 spot keeps changing) -The French still have a lot of oversees colonies because they clang on their empire until the end fighting controversial wars in Indochina and Algeria (mostly because the french high command felt humiliated after world war 2 and felt like it would be too much to lose their empire on top of that) also France tried much more to integrate its colonies and convert them to french culture than England. Other remnants of the french empire are the language which France keeps encouraging in its former colonies, the currency used in some western African countries which are linked to the euro and also the french interventionism in this region sending 4000 men to fight back radical Islamism of the region. Correction: I was corrected on a mistake at the beginning. On the contrary of what i said the french right wasn t that critical of the french reaction to the crisis, my first point was based on my general feeling and I would encourage any person interrested on the subject to research on it s own since i am not very imformed about french politics.
C'est faux, la droite française ne critique pas le gouvernement de Sarkozy pour la gestion de la crise étant donné que Sarkozy est lui même le père de la droite française transatlantique moderne (bien que je déteste le personnage, je dois bien lui accorder cela)

Well, that's actually my stance too. I love Paris's architecture, I mean really I love a lot of buildings there. Still, I could never live there: I hate Parisians, and the city is probably just too big for my taste anyway. Some parts are dirty nowadays too.
Yes we sleep 8 hours but work 6/7 days 10 hours per day without quitting or things like "hey i have to pick up my kids at school"... there is no perfect systeme here in france we actually envy the Merican way of doing things or german way ^^ And you actually got it about Paris its Elitist as hell

Not really, that policy started after the Revolution, in the 19th century. It lasted let's say during one century. During the era of the kingdom of France, it was the opposite: the king promoted linguistic division because it meant the people were divided too and the lack of communication would hinder revolts. At least that was the idea.
The desire to unify the country through language began with the French Revolution. But already at that time French was already widely established in urbanized areas throughout the country. And to succeed in this policy, there were two tools: school and the army (life in the barracks with "conscription"). But outside of these two institutions and in your native countryside, people spoke the language they wanted. The real moment when French completely established itself in the country was the First World War. It was at this time that French naturally imposed itself throughout the country, largely because the vast majority of conscripts had to use French to communicate with each other.
I'm reacting as i watch it: the turkish trolling that video are here cause the recent silent cold conflict between the two (about Greece and religious misunderstandings). Wich is kind of dumb since France and Ottomans pretty much had a great relationship before WWI.
Why does tommykay think "everyone had to" get rid of their colonies? I think I can name 5 major countries right now that didn't... seems like Germany doesn't teach this kind of stuff very well.
....lol i always found it funny that the americans are so into french food and french restaurants....but if you travel Europe you will never (or close to never) see a french restaurant around. In fact, in my entire life I have been in greek restaurants, indian, pakistani, Spanish Restaurants, Italian restaurants, i have even seen quite commonly portuguese, vietnamese...but I never entered in a french one. I actually don't remind to have seen one in my entire life in europe (Probably I passed by someone, for sure, but now i can't recall). French pastry place yes, but restaurants (if you exclude some creperie) are not so popular in Europe.
i think it's because a french restaurant would need to be very high class and expensive, there is no "fast food" in french cuisine, it's either very intricate or very basic, no inbetween
Je ne sais pas non plus d'où il a ces chiffres. Pareil pour les chiffres concernant la population et ses ethnies. Normalement les statistiques ethniques sont interdites...
I can understand why you said "Culture Fascism" but it's not! We just preserve our culture and our language to the English (American mainly) influences and domination in this Global world. I think all the countries must do the same to preserve their culture, and stay open to the others cultures like we do more or less well.
A big difference between DOM TOM and other colonies France use to have is that people born and living there are considered as plain french citizens. For example the britts use to consider everybody overseas as "subjects of the queen" and not as regular british citizens .As explained native population may ask for independance (new Caledonia case) but for them it's easyer to cope with the french administration and protection instead of building their own.
Well, we weren't forced to give up our colonies, we let them go after some wars and treaties. Those territories we kept weren't willing to leave because they couldn't go on their own
That man was wrong about multiple things but one thing wasent said before : we dont care about religion here. We can even trash on it all we want. " la laicité" is born here anyways. Ppl wont even really call themself catholics

Yea here in Canada, the Quebecois speak a “dirty french” too. But I live outside of Quebec so in school we’re taught French french, so I actually speak a more European french than the French around me. Although sometimes it’s hard to understand the hick french of the Quebecois 😂
french is a fake language anyways, franks spoke frankish, a dialect in west germany on the french border, after the franks got run over and controlled the frankish language mixed with latin and boom FRENCH is born lol
@@MaestroSangurasu sorry if I’ve offended, didn’t mean to. I believe I quoted what he said just so people understood what I was going on about. French French kinda see Quebecois or other Canadian French as lesser and more anglicized, thus dirty.
...well, the notable scientist "Marie curie" was born as "Maria Salomea Skłodowska" and was Polish.... "Curie" was the married name, truth to be said.... and the musician "jean baptiste lulli" was italian, known as Giovanni Battista Lulli (and he's more famous for the way he died than for his music: He hit his big toe while keeping the time with a big stick, he never wanted to cure himself, his finger went gangrenous, he refused to cut his leg as he used to be a good dancer and he died)

25:18 He probably google translated it and tried to repeat what google said. His pronounciation is terrible. As a french, I didn't understand all the words he said the first time I listened to it. Also the words he's using are pretty uncommun.
20:00 We don't talk about l'Académie française. We mock them. They are like old people thinking they can tell us if what we say is right and what is wrong. To give you all a recent example, there was this debate about whether or not covid is a masculin or feminin word. 98% of french people used "le" (masculin form) covid, when refering about it, and they still do. Radio and TV used also le. Then l'académie française said that it should be "la" (feminin form) for some reason. Yet nobody I know use la, and it's simply bullshit to make the language more... Unic I guess. Like having it's own identity. It's a bullshit institution that nobody cares about anymore. Let's put it that way.
I am. And I am also terribly disappointed that this academy is made of old scholars, who have no idea what they are doing anymore. When talking about language, people should vote for what they want to add as a New word on a government application. Yet we still give it to those of l'Académie Française, and end up sometimes with really stupid results
@@corentincaspers8229 I am astonished that you express this as a general opinion of the French (which in my opinion is not the case). Then, regarding your personal opinion, I am also particularly astonished at the assurance with which you are convinced that they have no idea what they are doing in view of the intellectual babble it takes to get in and the great personalities who have been members of it. And by the same token, to comment "Stupid" on their results. I think, therefore, it is up to me, that you have to be sacramentally inflated to write what you write when few in France have the capacity, the knowledge to be able to effectively comment on their "Stupid" actions.
@@bernardmontreux4664 ok, again, like you said, that is your personal opinion. Thinking that people a few people who had an education decades ago are still able to understand the new mechanics and evolution of the french language is simply utopia. Nobody would have the knowledge to understand every little thing about the growth of a language. Therefore it would be better to have the general opinion deciding in order to not have a better view of what the state of the language actually is. Then creating an application that democratically give us the information about that evolution would end up being better than having a little amount of people in their own circle and view of the language deciding everything. I hope you understand my point of view, and sorry if I offended yours by calling them "Stupid". It's not the people that I call Stupid, but the institution.
