Brilliant. The kind of great dramas they don't make anymore. Took me right back to the early 60s - the golly's, the heavy black phones with superb chrome purring dials, the gas bedroom heaters with the delicate fragile elements, short trousers and school caps and everybody you knew was smoking!

Sorry to upset Kidraver below but Robert Shaw was not an American; he was a very British actor born in Lancashire in 1927. He turned up in many British movies of the Fifties and Sixties, such as "The Dam Busters" before finding everlasting fame in "Jaws" and some American made movies before his untimely death.

Oh, the days of seat belts not being enforced, kids standing up in the front seat, a giant Golliwog, or Wolligog, a film that could never be made today, as all the PC outrage brigade would bring about thousands of them exploding with rage, but could be made back in 1962, when people were more sensible. I have a little 5 inch Golliwog (who I bought back in the 1990's from a tourist souvenir shop) who sits on top of my dashboard with a Hawaiin Hula Doll, who also sits along side him as well, who 'dances' about when I am driving.. So far, no one where I live have exploded with rage and written a nasty letter to the Guardian either to point out my sins, so much disappointed too. People were allowed to smoke back then too, and people were allowed to live life mostly how they wanted too, without being judged all the time. I think this film is better in B&W as it rather suits the age of when it was filmed. Plus on this channel that turns out very good quality and sound films, with no adverts too. Top channel.

Good film... thanks! Only one minor criticism -- the portrait. Usually in British films (& even TV programs) the art & decor is of the period represented & is appropriate to the type of home, etc, as opposed to Hollywood films, in which this is usually not the case. It was surprising to see that the lady's portrait here was of such poor & commercial quality, particularly as it was repeatedly shown & was the subject of conversation. The portrait looked like the cheapest kind of commercial painting, something quickly done for little money, not a portrait commissioned by a family of wealth & upper class. Odd for a British film, even one made on a lower budget. My background is in art & conservation of art but anyone with a basic public education would notice how bad this portrait is. Strange that a better quality portrait wasn't used, as good portraits from the period would've been available at low cost. (Portraits, unless of someone fairly well known or by a fairly well known artist, usually cost less than paintings in other genres. Also, such portraits are usually readily available at auction & in shops.)

If you look at the credits in the beginning you will see that though it was made in England and had english cast etc. it was made at the MGM studios there. Presumably there was a strong influence of american commercialism. I agree, I thought at the time, especially when they did a close up, the face was extremely unlike the quality of an English portrait.
