4:56 So Chef David , Carmy’s abusive mentor, is likely a reference to the real life Marco Pierre White, who was Gordon Ramsey’s mentor when he was a chef-in-training. Ramsey still recalls how he was so abusive to him that he broke down in tears multiple times. He was insane, incredibly egotistical, and described other people like the dirt underneath his shoes. Unfortunately he got a pass on this behavior because people would line up for many blocks to eat his food.

Did anyone else get goosebumps when they saw Carmy peeling peas next to Luca and remembered what he told Marcus about working with Carmy earlier in the show.. He said that he was so so fking good, that he himself got to an exceptional level just by "Trying to keep up with him"... and then the camera shows Carmy has peeled like 90% of the peas while Luca and the other chefs are maybe 20% done and are looking at Cary like, "WTF" and then it later shows Carmy himself pushing Luca and pushing him to evolve even further..

12:01 I don’t remember the episode but Syd made the comment that she was in New York and she was eating at all the top restaurants. I believe she said that his was the best she tried. This was that moment. I give all the props to this artistic way to start this season. It’s always the real moments that add to the whole that is this show and what makes it so real. I’m a cinematographer and what was displayed in this episode is a masterclass level of storytelling visually. Little to no dialogue and yet it spoke volumes. The symbolism and grasp on technique is out of this world. This is one of my favorite episode of the entire show.

I agree with roshi... this episode was unlike anything I've ever seen for a television show... speaks fucking volumes about the main character and yet, not a word was spoken... it was all shown us, the viewer from the perspective of Carmy, those who worked with him and his friends and family.... really really well done

It's not uncommon to start out an episode with a flashback montage, but eventually you realize it's 2/3 of the way through the show, and there hasn't been an opening title yet. The entire episode is one long flashback montage. That's some ballsy television storytelling.

Realizing now that Carmy did the same thing to Syd's dish in NY that she did when they opened pre-orders in the first season of the show with her cola braised short rib dish!

The fact that they were able to cast real renowned chefs like Daniel Boulud, Thomas Keller, Rene Redzepi is insane. They are like Gods in culinary world. Knowing how incredibly famous these chefs are, it makes me respect Carmy so much more.

Read somewhere else that Sydney doesn’t even have a fennel allergy and she ate fennel in season one. Carmy just wanted to do it his way, and it ended up being Sydney’s “best thing I ever ate”

When that dude said that Carmy was way better and worked way faster I didn’t think he was THAT much faster.

This episode is such a great example of using film/tv as a visual medium first. Using the visuals, the filmmaking, to tell the story.

Michael shot himself on the bridge remember, we dont know who found him. We found out in the pilot episode that Carmy never attended the funeral. Syd said in 1x08 that she'd eaten at all the famous restaurants and that her favourite meal was at Carmy's restaurant.

i absolutely loved the way they showed us Carmy's back story, it was so cinematic and well executed.

I just started watching Shameless and Carmy is one of the main characters. Season 5 episode 1 he said to his gf "Make every second count ". I know damn well that's not a coincidence lol.

This episode made me realize how much of a masterpiece this show is, i was hipnotized the whole time

10:54 Facts! At they end of the day, the chef just wants you to get better, and move beyond what you THINK you limit is. My chef cursed me out in front of my co-workers because i didn't season the steak tartare correctly, even though i tasted it before plating and adding the garnish. It was for a VIP ( Bobby Flay, the king of over-seasoning food ) and he was like " I f**king told you this has to be perfect, and you serve me this sh*t?! The F**k is wrong with you? Have you reached your limit? Make it again god dammit and TASTE!." He then spent the next 2 weeks tasting every one of my dishes, looking at me, then if i got it wrong, he'd ask one of the wait staff if they wanted to be the new Garde Manger. It's been a year since then and i still get PTSD flashbacks. The system sucks, but your skill level increases like 1000%.

This episode managed to cut between scenes of the past and present so beautifully it felt like a Christopher Nolan movie!

This episode was amazing, it told a lot of things by not telling anything, your understanding of the whole story and specifically Carmy is way better after it and they barely used words, just showed. Really, really good episode, I hadn't realized the first time I watched, but after the reaction I can definitely get it.

It's pretty telling that the "best meal I ever had" that Sydney had was Carmy making a dish that finally met Chef David's crazy standards AFTER losing his brother and not being mentally able to attend his funeral. I think this indicates that this high level of cooking or at least David's way of making dishes exacts wayyy too high a price on the chefs involved.

Not gonna lie y'all weren't on y'all game today. Respectfully it seemed like it took y'all a minute to lock in and pay attention... Btw Sydney told Marcus at the end of season one that before she started working at The Bear, she saved her money for a trip to NYC to eat at the best restaurants. She ended it by saying Carmy's food was the best and that he was the best chef. That scene where Sydney was served the plate is a flashback to that trip. ALSO Carmy put the Blood Orange back in the dish because Sydney had an allergy to the ingredient the head chef recommended. This is a detailed show so you can't be overly joking or you'll miss important information.
