Real guitar+drums (pcm) on top of fm synthesis, a piece of art. Also respect for some guy in 90s that said "i want 8 fm synthesis channels AND 4 pcm channels", even that the fm fans never asked for more.
It's amazing what people can do on 4 PCM channels XD Not to mention that this OKI chip does not support variable frequency playback unlike that Yamaha chip on the NEO-GEO, which means that one sample cannot represent different notes, and therefore the different guitar phrases have to be stored as a whole phrase, which occupies a lot of storage space in the game ROM. The composer really must have been really set on using guitars on this track! Astonishing determination.
@@gizaha That is indeed true. Also, the phrases are made up of easily repeatable "parts" that can be played multiple times in a row to create a whole phrase-even the first three notes of the guitar is repeated 4 times to create a longer melody. Really creative use of PCM channels to play guitar samples on limited hardware!
Can't believe they managed to put a sampled guitar audio as the lead melody XD The only other games that use the same technique, as far as I know, is F Zero X from the Nintendo 64, which played back pre-recorded guitar samples for the lead music. Still, that's the Nintendo 64, and its audio system isn't exactly limited. Maybe the bass samples as used on NES Sunsoft tracks count?
