Toms old stove 

I too have a Primus stove and still use it, It is now 77 years old and as good as new, It has been all over the world with me , Sure you need a small amount of meths to prime it but that's easy enough, you only need maybe 10 or 15 ml so a container holding maybe half a cup will last for ages. Paraffin (I know it as kerosene) is cheap and very economical, carry a 1 litre bottle and have the tank full. It will last you for ages,

@Thysville Hi Paul, I made the lead washers from a piece of lead roof flashing and you can make enough prickers to last you a lifetime from the top "E" string of a steel guitar.It is exactly the right size..! Sandy

Sandy, Nice job on the stove. It is great to take something that has not been used in years, clean it up, make a few adjustments and breathe new life in it. You really have something to be proud of there. I regret selling a Svea 123 that I used for several years while backpacking. Funny thing is I never did like that particular stove, much too fickle for me. However, the day I sold the thing I regretted doing so! Keep those videos coming. 73 John/W5CYF

Hi Gordon It could be that the jet has become enlarged or you put too much pressure in the fuel tank. I remember reading on a stove forum that it is possible to reduce the jet hole size by carefully peening it so it reduces in diameter. You need to make a wooden form which will fit inside the tube. Either that or buy a new vapouriser tube. I think you can still buy parts for these stoves. Wish I could be more helpful. Sandy

It has only taken me 5 years to come across this video (ha ha). Nice job. These are excellent little soves. I have spent many happy hols in the 60s with my wife and 2 children, camping wild and cooking for us all on two of these stoves (which I still have) - both complete, clean and in good working order.

Ive got one of the old stoves firdt time I used it ( aged 15) now46 just about burnt the whole of the uk to a crisp but I still use it now safely

The older stove have so much more charactor and charm than the modern equivilant. The only down side is having to prime with meths which means you need to carry two fuels. Also the paraffin is oily and a bit messy. Thanks Sandy

I have got one but unfortuately the jet opening of the vaporizing tube is blocked by corrosion. Any suggestion how to get it blowing again? The original prickers are not strong enough to get through. Any way, a marvelous piece of equipment.

I have a mine, I bought it incomplete, and I'm trying to repair, I repaired the not return valve, the piston, the pipe, just need a cup for the alcohol and the flame plate, I almost forgot, the support! And I'm thinking make a box for the transport, because I wanna use it in the forest!

@mazadan Ah Peter. You could be right.I should know that. What else do you know about radio?Reading between the lines I think you may have been in the forces at one time and maybe learned a few things then? Or perhaps you have an enquiring mind like me? Sandy

@mazadan Hi Peter, For woodland camping you can't beat the Honey stove cos lots of free fuel and nothing like a proper fire!But I am surprised by the performance of this old stove.Small,light and powerful.It really can keep up with modern stove's and so simple to maintain.It uses lead leather cork and nitrile rubber washers that can be easily made at home AND it's a thing of beauty unlike modern stoves! @pa3deb Hi ya Kee's, I think I will take it to the woods soon!It runs on Paraffin which was a popular fuel years ago but now mostly used in green house heaters. Kee's I need to qso with you on another band soon.Maybe 40 meters.Will qso on ssn. 73 Sandy

@BarefootsChild Thanks for the tip of adjusting the pressure valve to alter the burn rate.I had figured that out but wasn't sure it was common practice!The stove came with no instructions.I give it about 5 or 6 pumps and that seems to be enough. @nathanshepherd1 I've been thinking about taking it out nathan.But compared to the Trangia and Honey stove it's a bit fiddly and messy and needs 2 fuels to get it going!Once it's going tho nothing will stop it and it boils real fast! With the knowledge that can be gleaned from the Spirit stove forums I can see no reason why this stove shouldn't last for a very long time indeed.You can make all the consumable parts at home! Sandy

@johnrob281 Many thanks John, I really enjoyed the "Fettling" process to get the stove running.It's amazing how something so old works so well.Primus got the design right from the outset. I will take it out to the woods for a test soon! As for future video's.Well,when an idea pops into my mind then I make the video.I guess I am using RU-vid as a kind of video diary.They will be good memories for the future too! 73 Sandy

Hi Sandy, I have the Optimus 100 which is identical to your stove but slightly bigger, word of warning, do-not lose the flame spreader, as you will not be able to get a replacement, I had to have one made, so got two made at the same time.

I think it is to let the pressure out of the tank and turn the stove off. I had a leak on the vapouriser tube but made a new washer from a piece of lead. The pump washer is easy to fix and so is the non return valve. Hope it works out for you. Sandy

Hi Gordon, You will have to make yourself a lead gaskket. It's quite easy. Lead being soft will cut easy with a stanley blade. FIrst use thin lead 1 or 2mm thick. drill a hole in the centre to allow parrafin to flow, then trim the sides to fit the base of the vapouriser tube. Sandy

a very neat little stove. though a little noisey for me i prefer my trangia. i have a coleman pressure stove similar system to the primus but sounds like a rocket lol. but like most things back then made to last now adays there is always some obsalesence built in

I have always used this type of stove of which I have many, Primus, Svea, Hippolito etc. Far superior and more eco friendly than gas- no cannister to dispose of or wood- no smoke to give your camping position away when stealth camping. Also far less expensive to run and can be bought from car boots or jumble sales for a few pounds.

I certainly like my old primus. You cannot beat it for long slow simmering or melting snow in the winter. Amazing the amount of heat they kick out. Other stoves are better for other uses and it certainly is not idiot proof for youngsters to use. Finding the lead washers or prickers I suppose may be a problem? Nice video, Paul

Well sandy my washer and plunger kit came today great pressure but leaking out of the vapourizer bottom witch connects to the tank, think the lead washer maybe too small? Any ideas :-) Gordon

Hi sandy ,well I've replaced all seals couldn't really clean the vapourizer hole ,so I decided to light it. The pressure was there but all of a sudden it just took ahold and the thing was burning out of control,any ideas what I'm doing wrong ? I really want this stove up and running. Thank you. A thing of beauty!! I have a couple of these type stoves and they are real work horses if'n you know to feed and care for them. After you have practiced with it a bit, adjusting the pressure valve will make you an expert in controlling the stoves burn rate. They are loud, but I think that is dye somewhat to us having become accustomed to the new silent types. I just know that when I use mine in the winter...I LOVE HEARING THAT JET ENGINE ROAR! I equate the sound with warmth. Thanks mate.

Got mine but the pump don't work ,so I've ordered a washer kit off eBay. £3.20. Not bad

My father had the exact same stove in the 50s .i wish I'd kept it but alas it got thrown out.

Today I am going down to the shed with my kanthal wire grid and experiment with the diffusing of the flame and see if it reduces the boil time. I see the modern gas burners have a grid for infra red radiation

May I ask what the screw on the right hand side is? Mine appears to have been soldered over

I have that exact same model but havent used it because My dad says it's a petroleum/kerosene stove but to me it looks more like an alcohol stove so could it run on alcohol or would that be dangerous? Any info Will be greatly apreciated! 😁
