Hi Martin. Thanks for an interesting and useful vlog. Tom-tom looks a good competitor to the Avtex satnav around the same price and features, but while Avtex adds all the CCC and CAMC sites as well, the Tom-tom display looks better. Like yourself we don't usually use a satnav for towing as they're not always reliable. We start with the map and I also use Google street-mapping to check on potential problem spots for towing and also site locations and approaches. From that I make up and keep my own directions that I can re-use when visiting the site a second time. Trish helps navigate when we tow and she says she finds doing it that way is easier than either map-reading or following a sat-nav. Seems to work and doing the "recce" gives us peace of mind to enjoy the journey. Helpful video as ever. Thanks for sharing. Take care. George and Trish
Hi George & Trish, The TomTom works really well and so far it’s not let me down. Should be fine for the caravan. I’ve not seen the Avtex one but have heard people say the display is a bit confusing. I also check the route on Google and use the map, Angela says I over plan but don’t think it’s a bad thing. Thanks for comments and watching, Martin
Hi Martin. I have the Tomtom Camper Go. Your New Tomtom is almost identical to mine in terms of layout settings. Been using for 3 years and has been great. I even used when I drove a 3.5 Ton Van. I agree removing the current time is pain. I have found the ETA time to pretty accurate though. You should have no issues when towing the Caravan. Thanks Phil.
Hi Phil, so far in the truck it’s worked really well. Hopefully they will do an update which will show current time. Will be using it for the France trip 😊 Thanks for watching
Hi Martin great review !!!! I have the same Tom Tom built into my truck and it's really good. Also have Maps and use Google can never be to careful. Paul
Good vid, not sure I will get one though. That said the car one is ever so slightly naff! Stick to planning in advance, cos I’m old and fixed in my ways! Still, good video, thanks for posting
Hi Martin Hope the jobs going well for you … I have TomTom Go Camper and it’s pretty similar with same facilities. You can choose just car or car + caravan - where yours has Truck I’ve tested routes by setting just car and then car + caravan and it definitely chooses a safer route. Lifetime updates as well Downside is when the map updates it deletes the old map first then it’s a big download - usually over 8Gb and it sometimes doesn’t pick up home wifi even though it’s next to the router. Sometimes it drops internet connection half way through update and you have to start again so don’t start an update just before you set off. It’s fast too at giving commands - unlike Google maps which doesn’t keep up with you. All in all good sat nav and think your version is more or less same Thanks again for vlog and good to see you Regards H 👍🏻
Hi Howard Hope you are well. Job is going well just some long days! I’ve seen the TomTom camper, think they are all very similar. I noticed one mine that the maps are already on but you can update each individual country when you need to. One disadvantage is that it doesn’t have an SD card slot for extra memory like my old one had. Thanks for comments and watching, cheers Martin
@@TheCaravanNut mine has a micro sd slot at the bottom Identical to yours although smaller but mount is the same. The euro map auto updates and its free but seems to update quite regularly with the issues I mentioned . It used to read out text messages but some reason it’s stopped - prob something to do with syncing with the “My TomTom” app - which is crap anyway
@@TheCaravanNut great thank you. Can you tell me what dimensions you put in? I’ve bought and wondering if I go to HGV size to as near to guarantee as possible that I avoid single track roads 😅 I’ll also be using a printed map to double check!
Can’t remember what dimensions I put in, you should find this info in your log books for car & caravan. I would add maybe half a meter on length. Think the width was about 2.3 meters. Height would be about 2.6. I would set it up as a truck or bus, it however won’t stop you going down small lanes. I always check the route on a map. Cheers
@@TheCaravanNut makes total sense. I’ve setup as a truck and the default dimensions are perfect as they’re so much bigger than the car and caravan That should help avoid anything really difficult but to your point, the map will continue to come in the car with us Happy caravanning
Its a shame that even this one will take you down tight roads, and its usually doing it to "save" you like 30 seconds when you could have stayed on the carriageway you were on.
