Yessss I know Atlas isn't the official name, but come on, if we were to give The Mine Engine a name, surely the logical thing would be to give them the names we initially thought they were called. Sorry Luke Ryan.
That being said I will need to remove the number 9 since the mine engine has been confirmed to be privately owned, not part of the Mid-Sodor railway. Basically, The Mine Engine, fan named Atlas, worked on Duke's on railway.
This engine was made very opportunistically, and before Explosive Cookie uploaded his video, hence the nameplate and number which technically shouldn't be there. Whilst making my Oliver custom, I cut the cab off a Tomy Duck, which left his boiler. I realised this was about the shape of the mine engine, so I figured if I attached it to a motor I'd have a custom on my hands. I made the open cab with card stock and balsa wood, which was glued to the back of the body. I cut a cylinder of wood for one of his domes/safety valves, and painted it bronze. I used the top of a Tomy Stanley funnel to extend the funnel, also painting it bronze. I painted the body orange and black, gave it a WR Edward face and glued on nameplates and numbers which I printed onto regular paper. The chassis is Molly's tender, which had to be cut down slightly on the sides to make way for the side rods. Thankfully, it can still double as a Tender if I remove the side rods and change the wheels around. The body is simple blue tacked to the top of the battery when attached. The buffer beam is a block of balsa wood painted red and black.
I'm pleased with how this one turned out, and I am currently adapting some stories to use him in. Next up is RWS Duke, which caught a glimpse of in this video, but believe me when I say there's something cool about that custom that you probably haven't noticed. I will also have a video dedicated to custom narrow gauge rolling stock I've made. You get a peak of the D.Fusit van here, but there are other customs still to show.
