So… I finally bit the bullet and decided I would make RWS style versions of the main 8 engines (or main 11 I guess since I’ve made blue Donald and Douglas and a custom Oliver). I would love to hear people’s genuine opinions on this one. I was really excited to make RWS James. He’s one of my favourites. I particularly like the way Class 28 Moguls have a short cab roof and a bulky firebox. But ultimately I’m not sure if I like the aesthetic of this custom. I’m pleased with how it was executed, but I’m not sure if I like how bulky he looks. The actual Moguls have a much thinner boiler which I didn’t really consider. Not until after I began work and someone on twitter suggested using a redesigned Edward instead for the smaller boiler (shoutout to @HTGE3Prod).
I used a Plarail redesigned James. Originally I wanted to use a Trackmaster 2012 James, which is very similar in shape to the redesigned Plarail, so I compromised since they are hard to come by. A Trackmaster James would have been so much easier: The new Plarail models are all one mould. The footplate and body are one piece of plastic, instead of 2 sperate pieces like the older toys. This made it so much harder to paint the footplate.
Anyway, I used the redesign Plarail because I liked how it’s got a shorter scale length, making him smaller than Gordon and Henry. But ultimately, the fat diameter of his boiler seems to negate the fact he’s shorter. He still looks just as big as Gordon and Henry.
The plus side of the larger boiler is that the larger but really accurate RC James face fits perfectly. This is the face I used.
I used card stock to extend the firebox, and putty to fill in any gaps and smooth it over. Dark blue posca marker and gold paint was used for the lining. A picture of his number 5 was printed off and stuck on. I used a Dremel tool to cut down the length of the cab roof.
