Ton’ak Ifugao Rice Harvest Ritual
Performed by: Ifugao Performing Arts Group, Ifugao, Philippines
Background
The ton’ak is a ritual feast of the Ifugao sponsored by the kadangyan, families of noble descent. It is performed in the rice granary of the sponsoring families during the harvesting season. This is one of two phases of the traditional rice cycle during which the hudhud is chanted (the other, which has totally disappeared, used to be performed during the planting stage). During this occasion, workers from all over the agricultural district converge on the ton’ak rice field to help with the harvesting and to participate in the feast that follows. The mumbaki, traditional priests and priestesses, chant and sing prayers to the ancestors and the myriad of gods of agriculture, exhorting them to join in the festivities and to take part in the feast through animal sacrifices and rice wine drinking.
This particular rice ritual is now rarely performed due mainly to the changing of the traditional rice varieties in favour of the newly developed high-yielding varieties introduced by the government and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). The cultivation of traditional rice is central to the continued practice of the old religion, a vital component of Ifugao culture in general and the very foundation of the Outstanding Universal Value of the Ifugao Rice Terraces as a heritage of humanity.
Synopsis / Description
The performance portrays the harvest ritual of the Ifugao as traditionally performed in the heritage municipality of Kiangan, thought to be the birthplace of Ifugao culture. Emphasis is given to the chanting of the Hudhud di Ani, one of few surviving hudhud epic chants of the Ifugao inscribed by UNESCO as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The presentation includes recitations of the baki (prayers of the old religion), traditional dances and hudhud chanting. The performers are all Ifugao from the municipality of Kiangan, Ifugao Province, who organized themselves into a school of living traditions to conserve what remains of the intangible heritage of the their people.

Also, i noticed some comments here with a little bit of negative undertones shall i say, and cant help but question what is wrong with them? Saya lebih bangga kalau tau negara saya kongsi budaya dengan negara lain, terutamanya Indonesia :D sebab ianya bukti yg nenek moyang kita adalah sahabat sebelum datangnya orang-orang puti :") so i hope wherever you're from, always be respectful and openminded

The dance looks very similar to the Kadazan dusun in Sabah called sumazau
@oparasatauwaya
@oparasatauwaya 3 года назад
Of course it does, Filipinos and native Sabahans are directly related peoples. There is a direct historic, linguistic and cultural link that Sabah and native Sabahans hold to the Philippine archipelago over peninsular Malaysia. Sabahan languages are grouped in with Philippine languages, they are especially close with Mindanaon languages like Manobo, Mansaka and Bukidnon. The Sabahan cultures resemble our various cultures in Mindanao (Manobo, Tboli, Bukidnon, Blaan, Yakan), the Highlands of Luzon (Ifugao, Bontok, Kalinga, Kankanaey Ibaloy etc), and some parts of the Visayas (Suludnon), Mindoro Mangyan, and southern Palawan (Palawan tribe), as well as wider Philippine groups very closely. The word for 'to dance' in Tagalog for example is sumayaw (sayaw), so we can understand when you say sumazaw. This word is tari in Malay for comparison. You also have a musical tradition called magagong, which translates exactly the same way in Philippine languages (it means "to play the agong" in nearly all PH languages like Tagalog, PH Bisaya or Manobo. I found out you also have a Bisaya group in Sabah too, Bisaya/Visayan people are one of the major subgroups of Filipinos who live on the Visayas region), we also have a similar musical tradition we call agung or agong music, and also kulintang (which you call kulintangan). In Malay this would be translated as beragung. It's a shame that politics has separated both places from each other.

True, if we we're never colonised our belief would have been very similar to those in the Cordilleras. Animism was predominant throughout the archipelago, with a higher influence of hindu-buddhism in southern tagalog and much of the visayas and some parts of mindanao. The wooden statue that you see at the middle is the same with idol that tagalogs and visayans (most notably is hara amihan aka queen juana of cebu) used for guidance and worship.

According to my grandfather who is a Tuwali It was somebody tried to introduce hudhud in our place but guys didn't bother to learn it because it is too long and they don't see the need to chant while harvesting. I will quote " Kon ot hi tagan hi tamu ya eta boh nek mangaw awwaw. ngan hilbi na? hiyan agge inadal nan tatagu hitu kad an taku. in en hon tagun nangineya ad kiyangan ot ad kiyamgan an gimmamut te pohdon nan tagu hidi."

It's not the same. Your Mag-avaw is not our Ton-ak. Luzon is very far from Sabah. Your traditions are closer to Mindanao people like the Subanen, Tausug, Teduray and Bajau. You're not culturally close to Ifugao, Kalinga, Bontok, or other Luzon peoples.
