You ever watch the rig rundown on Angus and Mal’s gear? It’s impressive how simple they keep it. Just plug in, turn it up and play. Let the amps do the work. Truly old school. No mods, no effects. Just let them Marshall’s do the work. I often say the reason the old plexys are hard to come by is because Angus and Mal blew them all up. Lol. Not really true but sounds good. It’s also astounding to see when you watch the rig run down how many extra stacks they bring with them and a semi full of tubes and components to keep them running. Knowadays the wall of amps are a thing of the past because of modern PA’s but I’m here to tell you I saw AC/DC in the early 80s when that wall of Marshall’s was live and it was something to behold. The power was unreal.
Great video! And congrats on the new addition! I also have one of the Gretsch G6131-MY guitars and love it. I play through an early ‘89 reissue JTM45 and a 1960AX 4X12 cab. It’s funny that you point out the same issues I’ve encountered, notably how the strings ring behind the bridge, in fact I think I’ve commented on it on one of your past videos. As for strings, I like the D’Addario XL Pure Nickel Jazz Medium 13/56 with the wound G. I’ve been playing AC/DC for over 35 years, mostly the Bon Scott years. After I got my Gretsch, I felt like I was re-learning all those old songs because it plays very differently than my SGs that I was using previously. Again, very well made videos, keep them coming!
Just received my G6131MY and SV20H - absolutely loving it and now playing along and starting to sound half decent. Thanks for all of your videos, it's a real joy to play along
I've been playing Malcolm parts since 1985. There was no RU-vid to quickly learn from. All was done by hearing, repeating and practising. Still, I've picked up a few things from you. Good job and thanx!
What a cool video! I’ve been chasing that Malcolm tone for a long time. The heavy strings made the callous on my middle finger so big it started to get clumsy so I had to switch back to 9-42s. Also Dunlop max grip heavy picks work great for me. Thanks for the info! Appreciate all you do
Great speaker choice. My Malcolm Young in a box for home practice is an old Marshall Lead 12 with a G10L-35 speaker (bass cone). A Princeton tweed (5F2A) clone connected to the same speaker, gives me a fantastic AC-DC tone too! One final piece of advice, Rotosound Purples (strings) give you that Malcolm Young tone on a budget and it has that wound 3rd. UK made.
Awesome, man. Just discovered your channel and I’m currently waiting on my Gretsch MY to come in. Your channel will help greatly with learning some tunes 🍻
I love your videos, you helped me and are helping me learn more AC/DC songs. I really love that you show how to play Malcolm's rythum playing in AC/DC songs and I hope one day to either start a AC/DC cover or tribute band or join one and play rythum. I'm trying to save up money to buy a Gretsch g5222 in aged natural and when I get it, I'm gonna take the neck pickup out and some of the controls to make it look like one of Malcolm's Gretschs. Long Live AC/DC
There are moments in my life when I realize how lucky I was , to have been a teen in the mid seventies - find that, a brand new AC/DC album just came out , hurry up and buy it , get together with my friends to listen to it - light up a doobie and ride every single chord strummed by Malcom ( Nothing but eargasms children ). .PPPFFTTT🙄🙄🙄!!! Only a few of you " chosen ones "know what the hell I'm talking about 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄PPPFFTTTT!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣!!!!
Thanks for doing this vid brother.. since I suck at playing leads but love ACDC.. I gravitate towards Malcolm's playing.. but also love noodling with Angus rhythm parts as well.. the interaction is fantastic.. your channel has gotten me over the top even on some of the songs I found difficult.. I started with a 2 pickup clone in green burst before I got my Gretch tribute used.. your new beast is killer indeed!!. I'd also be interested to contact your "guy".. can't have enough Mal guitars.. I have 6 SG's as well.. all give a different pleasure.. have you tried just using the Normal channel.. really is a bit darker but gives great Mal tones as well.. that SV20 can give you Mal and Angus with no problem.. their sound is very simple.. basically Plexi or superbass (just a Plexi with different caps) and power tube grit.. attenuator is required of course... Thanks again for doing all these vids.. it's a ton of work but they are greatly appreciated.. of all the channels I follow.. I always have a look at your latest first.. !!
Hey BJ! You have more SGs than me!! I have 4!! The normal channel just has way too much low end for me but I haven't fiddled with it since I got the amp. I will check it out for sure..I can definitely get you in touch with the guy that built my new guitar. Just email me at dbolton22@hotmail.com and I'll forward your email to him. I have already sent 2 request for guys interested.
I've only got a basic model Epiphone Les Paul with the cheapest smallest amp around because my main focus is on playing. I'm using 10s, and have a set of 11s waiting for when I get better. Still, it's great to pick up tips here and there such as the wound G string and the gain/volume interaction. Good info on the amps too, even though I can't use them in my apt. Thanks!
I've you have a chance to buy a J-Rockett Caliber 45 you made a great step forward. this Caliber 45 gives you the sound of a JTM 45 from early 60/65s. i use the Caliber 45 for a while before i buy my JTM 45MKII 50W for a really Cheaper price.
M.P - I appreciate your acknowledgement of how hard to hit strings. I fully agree and play the same, less distortion, hit'em harder. I use Dunlop Ultex 2.0 Sharp picks (fwiw) and Elixir strings as well. Everyone; listen to this man - he knows his shit. Always remember distortion does not equal volume! You want power? hit the thing with power. Nice work. Keep it up. Proud of you. New relic is nice, enjoy M.P!
Your new “Beast” is perfect , I need one. I also have the Mal signature Gretsch. Now I’m gonna put foam under the strings. Great tip, never even thought bout doin that. Can you give info on maker of your new Beast and what kind of legal tender you threw down on it? Appreciate what you do. Long Live Malcolm Young
Great video. I've always thought your tone is killer so I enjoyed watching that. I was hoping to see the settings you dial in on the amp itself. You mention the clean sound, so what level do you have Gain, Bass, Middle and Treble at? I think I'm one of those guys you mention who uses way too much gain 😄
Hey Z...thanks man!! Gain is only 2 to 4..so pretty low. Bass is set around 5 and treble at 7. Mids and presence at 1.5. There is more high end in his sound than most people think...but I change them around all the time. The only ones that stay the same are the Mids and Presence. Hope this helps!
@@malpractice5904 yeah it does. I'm only playing thru the little 40w Marshall practice amp so it's hard to compete with a stack but I'll dial that in and see how it sounds later today. I have a feeling the gain will find it's way back up again tho 😄.
I’m trying to make a build right now but can’t find a reliable source of the dimensions of those carriage bolts he used to plug the switches and pot holes. Do you happen to know the dimensions?
I know I've seen a Rig Rundown with AC/DC, but I think it is with Angus and Stevie's gear. I have no idea if he's running the same stuff Malcolm used of not.
yes Stevie young uses the same things. and Stevie uses Malcolm's number 2 Jaydee Custom White Arrow Jet guitar instead of the number 1 Beast guitar (buried with Malcolm)
I already commented here, but decided to delete it, to ask this question: I’m thinking about buying a new guitar, and it’s between a Fender Telecaster, a Gibson SG ‘61 reissue, and a Gretsch g6131MY (there is no way I’m getting a CS) Thing is, I’ve only tested the g6131t-62 vintage select one, so I’m wondering how big the difference is between the vintage select and MY signature, and if it’s worth the higher price? Someone tell me…
Hey man, as always love your stuff. Hope you remember seeing my one or two videos and our earlier chats. I'm glad you covered the strings (many people pay no attention to this aspect of things yet its so important). Have to say I don't think those Elixir strings are any good at all, do you have an email address? I'll send you the details of where I source mine - they used to hand make Malcolm's for him and I assume still do for Stevie 🤘
Hey man, yes of course I remember your videos! You can really play...I use elixir only because my hands sweat really bad. I can kill a brand new set on uncoated strings in a day. dbolton22@hotmail.com I would love to check them out. and BTW post more videos!
@@malpractice5904will do they all appear to be on back order - Gretsch reckon I should get the guitar around Christmas/New Year and Marshall said.........................!!
Good things come to those wait!! If you want one earlier than that and you live in the States, check out Wild West Guitars in California They have one and they have the new red one as well.
I have heard that the Bugera attenuator throws some serious heat.. many use a wood box underneath to avoid melting their tolex . Watch out for that my friend..
The pickups are different. It’s also lighter than the MY guitar. Overall sounds more like Malcolm guitar. The pickups being a huge difference. Filtertron vs Powertron
I'm self taught. I took some lessons back in 1987. I need some lessons!! Yes it is a lot harder than most people think. Even though its just basic chords there are some many cool little things in his playing. I'm still learning..
hey, you make a great job for us all around the whole fucking world. I'm write you from Germany. please write a set list with all the parts you using for your videos. the awesome replica guitar is expensive. i play a gretsch, you show it at first. JTM 45 MKII 50W my cabinet is a 300W JCM 900 series. the JTM45 is the hell on earth. Greetings from Germany Mike
@@malpractice5904 what for parts you used! BLUETOOTH SPEAKER "exactly Name" Microphone and the other parts you named. ACDC special Malcolm helps me in the deepest time in my life, he helps me to play ACDC Songs. when i starts to playing, i understand what he's playing and what a great part he is in the band, the rhythm technique he had, is awesome special in early live recordings with Bon Scott.
The Bluetooth is the Spark Positive Grid 40w speaker. The microphone is a shure micro phone that can plug into an iPhone. It’s pretty small. Hope this helps. The Gretsch is a handmade one from a guy in the UK. Great guitar. Amp is Marshall SV20 with a Marshall 4x10 cab. Thanks again!!
Hi! I have one please of you;..please send me, Internet Site or Kontakt, or Email from master of your REPLICA Malcolm Young Guitar. THANK SO MUCH..!!!!
Would the maker of that guitar be able to replicate malcoms Gretsch in Left handed form do you know? Also can I ask how much you can expect to pay for guitar? Thanks
