This item is an absolute MUST for me. Since I got my first one years and years ago, I haven't owned a mandolin since that didn't have a Tone-Gard.
Keeps the back of the mandolin away from your body, resulting in a very noticeable boost in tone and volume. So much of the sound of the mandolin comes from the back! This contraption is especially helpful when standing or using a strap. It easily installs by slipping over the back of the mandolin and is slightly adjustable. Rubber and leather pads are in place to protect the instruments finish. Also fits inside most cases, so removal isn't necessary.

I just received my Tone-Gard from Banjo Ben today. OMG I can’t believe the difference with projection and tone. My F-5 never sounded better!

I was skeptical, but hopeful since I mostly play with jams and a little desperate for more volume .I can safely say it gave me a 25% boost .another plus ,it fit in my period hardshell case from the 20's,my only suggestion would be to make it out of lighter material.

I do believe these work, but the difference in volume in this video is more likely due to you playing closer to the mic, isn’t it?

Sure, there's a bit attributed to the distance, but not all or even most. Besides difference in volume, I hear a change in tone as well. For a better comparison, compare the A chop at 1:50 and 2:50

It does make a difference in tone and projection but it will not fit in all cases. Some high end cases are so tight with the interior fit it will not go in there.

@Oleg Svensson Eastman not really a high end case. I'm talking about high end like Price/Pegasas/Gibson Loar style cases. And you also have to consider a slight increase in depth as these do add an inch. Calton and Mark Leaf can handle the tone guard on.

@Oleg Svensson There own website states "Yes, in almost all cases, including Calton cases." . I was only pointing out it will not fit in some cases. Eastman is a less than $100 case, while a Price is a $600 case. I'd hate to spend $600 on a Price only to find it will not allow the tone gard to stay on. I too have 3 Eastman 815 mandolins with both their styles of cases and yes it will fit in those cases. But you couldn't hammer down an F5 inside of any of my 3 different style Price mandolin cases. But you got me on the years of playing. I've only been at it 57 years.

I have seen films of a lot of the old timers holding their mandolin out like that during solos. I always thought it was just for the sake of showmanship.
