The music is descriptive and inspirational and enhances the message of triumphant, defiant faith over the devil. Luther's great words, 'A safe stronghold our God is still, A bulwark never failing....', culminating in words in his final verse of his great hymn, 'And though they take our life, Goods, honour, children, wife, Yet is their profit small These things shall vanish all, THE CITY OF GÒD REMAINETH.' AMEN to that.
Listened to the "Premiere" of this piece at the Centenary Celebrations in the Albert Hall 1965. We were seated in the tier just above the organ loft and had a fantastic view of the musicians.
I remember when it came Bands sudenly had to have sectional practice before it was all put together.Would still be a challenge at band contests.Still remains up to date although over 50 years old.Trouble is I'm nearly 70.wonderfull memories evokes from this glorius music full of melody & technic.al brilliance.
