Just got my new Tonedrum in „Saffron“-scale two days ago and was in love immediately. I own two Rav Vast and a Rav Moon, all just since a few weeks and great instruments, but the Tonedrum fixed some issues I personally didn’t like especially about the Rav Vast. It’s huge and heavy with not enough tongues, which make them too far apart for my playing-technique to improvise properly, As a tabla-player I want it more densed together and have more tones. The Tonedrum is also much flatter, which enables me to play the tongues with the fingers I want instead of obliging which fingers to use according to the angle of the tongues with the more handpan-like shape of the Rav. I’ve discovered that some overtones can be triggered by hitting them with fingernails, a feature I can’t replicate on a Rav in this manner. Unfortunately I didn’t acquire the finger-nail-technique of Nadishana for full potential.
On the neutral side the instrument is more quiet compare to a Rav, but comes with an internal pickup-system by default, which I haven’t used for this recording. With the microphones I’m using the sound is better while the pickup should be good enough to increase its volume sufficiently to avoid feedback on stage, even it picks up environmental sounds as well. Seems that the mics are too close to the Tonedrum and need more distance to avoid distortions next time.
