The tonfa is a versatile traditional weapon that had been modified for modern law enforcement use. As a training tool, it provides a host of unique grip strengthening and flexibility challenges that make it engaging, challenging and refreshing to train with.

You are GOOD! Great, in fact ... The Uncanny ability, you just DO. To answer questions that arise as I absorb what you are imparting with exceptionally timed and framed demonstrations. Nothing wasted, everything flowing. A short little video with content that uncompresses (if that is a word) for hours and hours, long after the video has ended. Even better when reviewed after trying and doing it. WOW! Thank you.

I ain't messing with that guy. I got a pair of tonfa thinking it may not be the worst to keep a blunt object handy at home. However, there is definitely far more to these than I even suspected.

In all my experience with martial arts, I think this is the first time I actually encounter someone who understands the Tonfa the way I do. It is simply an extension of the body (like most weapons) and should be used using the same principles one uses to fight and generate power in the same fashion plus the actual mastering of the weapon itself. I dont fully understand why some refuse to evolve and remain stuck in old ways (which is good for historicity) and don't see the value or realise that combat has changed and people may use techniques from different art or systems with traditional Kobudo weaponry. It simply is an evolution of it. I really appreciate what you do and sure will study this video in more details. I have chosen the Tonfa as my weapon of choice and have been studying it for a few years (after many years of other classical ma and some less classical). I have found myself to study on my own as no one has been able to understand what I was looking for or interested in. You are the first I encounter and unfortunately it is on RU-vid not in a class or seminar... Thank you for putting it out there that there is more the one method. I will definitely need to show this to some people here.

In horizontal strikes with the long end, are the handles always vertical to prevent damaging the wrist?
@Combatprofessor
@Combatprofessor 3 месяца назад
Some styles do teach horizontal long portion horizontal hits but I don’t personally find them as comfortable. They’re definitely possible with the right alignment .
@branboom3342
@branboom3342 5 месяцев назад
Do you have any suggestions for the proper length of tonfa? Should it go all the way to the elbow when held by the handle? Thank you!
@Combatprofessor
@Combatprofessor 5 месяцев назад
Yes usually it should be at least as long or slightly longer but sometimes it’s easier to start off with shorter ones because they are lighter.
@edithfinchers3540
@edithfinchers3540 Год назад
Glad I've found someone who encourages using these in a boxing stance with the short end. I used to be a boxer but injured my hand and therefor can't train anymore, so I've been looking for a weapon to compensate whilst keeping my original technique. Question, do these work on punching bags or will the tonfa slip from your forearm once you land the punch??
@Combatprofessor
@Combatprofessor Год назад
So usually I keep my punches shorter and snappier with a tonfa because the long portion does create a large lever that wants to make it slip. I rarely punch with the short end with the long portion aligned in the forearm. That position is usually used more for blocking. When punching I tend to tuck the long portion under the armpit for exactly this reason. It does still want to wiggle and the first few sessions will really work new stabilizing muscles in your forearm which is a big part of their value as a training tool. At the beginning you might want to only use one tonfa . The free hand can be use to jab or push the opponent at bay which gives you that extra time to adjust your weapon grip. The free hand can also be used to adjust the tonfa after movements. I’ll get you a few link to some single handed work. This one has a bit: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VFbAJifG4rw.html And this one is on spinning strikes but they are a great compliment for keeping distance ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rLdfRBFNuzA.html

I've been using tuifa for a long time, since I was a kid and I can tell you one thing, you gotta make sure you get good tuifa with proper fittinghandles and good square frame is usually better. I have a pair you do. Infact they're the exact same but I upgraded to shurido and holy cow the difference.

The wood quality is hugely important as well. I like a good weight. The cheapest ones have circular joints which just get loose very quickly especially if they’re taking impact so a square tongue joint is important too
