I came across this video because I am on this new journey to correcting my smile and speech issues from tongue thrust. I have a tongue crib and it has been a big adjustment. Thank you for explaining the habits and the things I can do to continue to change this bad habit.
Please everyone! If you have an issue with tongue thrust, please take advantage of these exercises! I've had this problem with it for almost all of my life and it's costing me thousands of dollars to fix.
I have been watching this video everyday to remind myself how to place my tongue in my mouth while at rest and while eating to address this issue. I recently got tinnitus from TMJ disorder and went to Physical therapy after 6 sessions we found out I had a tongue thrust which made my tongue lay flat in my mouth and kept my upper and lower teeth to touch all day which led to my jaw muscles always working and never getting any break and this led to TMJ issues. I was told to practice what was suggested in this video and it has helped tremendously. Only thing is my mouth feels so weird doing this all day, while keeping my lips closed with my teeth apart. Hopefully It becomes a habit after 21 days...
@@championsmiles yes especially when your tongue feels big because your palate is narrow . I have that and it feels my tongue doesnt fit XD altho I can hold it in the right position easily when paying attention. I can swallow well like that also. But I need to constantly remind myslf throughout the day and also my tongue on the sides will go between my molars because there is no space
@@nasreenakhuda Not really, cos my tongue is against my front teeth . when i talk , i try to be careful so as not to spit on people. though, when i wake up in the morning, my tongue get erected against my teeth. i feel like my tongue thrust is somehow connected to my conscious . it felt like i must have gon tru some trauma to have lost some connection between my consiousness and my tongue . i dont know .
I forgot to add, I have braces on and it’s closed my gap. I underwent a surgery where they cut a part of the gum where the space was before the braces closed it. It’s helped greatly but I noticed I still tongue thrust some times. I’m hoping these exercises work🙂
Wish my dentist would of told me about this when I first got brace's as a kid because now I got a open bite and they might not be able to fix it now as an adult 😡🤬
Should the tip of the tongue move back from the original spot on the roof of the mouth when swallowing or was the wave pattern you described only referring to the back of the tongue?
Could you do a video and use the end of your pen to point to the exact spot we should be resting/ putting are tongue? So we're not putting it to far back. Thanks man!
this video is so helpful! i’m about to get braces for the second time and this time i’m paying out of pocket. I fear I won’t be able to break this habit and my teeth will shift back to my open bite 😕. However, I’m going work on these exercises . I also tongue thrust in my sleep. That is when I do it the most. Any advice on how to minimize that?
I'm going through this too:( I had braces and my teeth were perfect. I thought my teeth shifted because I didn't wear the retainers long enough but it was definitely my tongue thrust and I'm saving up for Invisalign now.
I’m a tongue thruster, I did all of these exercises throughout my day but while I’m asleep I can’t control my tongue to stay in the right position so please can you give me any tips to avoid thrusting while I’m asleep?
Hello dr Frey this was explained very well. I once had the perfect smile and now I have an overbite of 3m and I feel it’s changed my smile and effected my confidence. I can’t talk properly either and I really didn’t no this was all because of the tongue. I’ve just tried to keep my tongue up to the roof which I will work on but I feel like I look weird and it doesnt feel quite right what is that? Also by correcting the tongue can it naturally correct the overbite at all? I saw an orthodontist and he said I can have braces but it may close the gap by 50% and I will have to wear a retainer forever. I hope you reply much love from the uk
Thank you! It is possible that you may get some spontaneous orthodontic improvement by mastering this. However, without examining you it is impossible for me to say. Working on this will definitely feel awkward, but you should get used to it over time. Keep in mind that you do not have to move your tongue far from your teeth, as long as your tongue is not touching your front teeth. Good luck!
What about invisalign, if it’s not a skeletal bite issue and just dental, it should work and it seems less invasive. I wish i had an overbite i think, have huge open bite and it’s not cool at all.
Sir I have an overbite and also tounge thrusting. I started doing this exercise’s but after one day I’m feeling some weird sensation on my teeth and my lower teeth is paining. And I’m also getting a headache. And also salaiva is forming on my mouth .Should I continue doing this exercises and getting used to it?I mean can the pain might gone after making it a habit?
I was looking at old pictures and I never had a one sided open bite but it developed randomly 3 years ago and it was because my toungue would push out on that side but idk how it developed out of no where
I had an overbite till 2 years ago but the second I put on braces I developed open bite because of my tongue which took a while to correct I finished my braces treatment a year ago and I’m not joking when I say I developed an open bite 2 weeks after it’s so horrible because now I’m already thinking of going to another orthodontist because mine said my teeth Will never be straight because I touch my lips together and push my tongue on my front teeth when I’m swallowing and it’s too late since I’m in my early 20s to get rid of this
After having my son I realized my tongue was pushing my teeth forward. It has been about 6 months now and my top teeth are pushed out, I have a gap in between my teeth and noticed when I swallow my tongue goes between my teeth. Will doing these exercises reverse the effect and help my teeth go back to normal? Or do I need a guard?
I have tongue thrust and i am.unable to swallow my saliva in that position which you told. I have tongue crib fix in my mouth but its so difficult to swallow.
I'm 50 now can the tongue thrust exercise work for me? plus i have an open bite that need fixing, not sure if I qualify now. I'm going to record "where is my tongue" and ill put the audio on repeat as a reminder on my desk and on my phone with my earpiece. hmm, tongue behavior modification... when I tried your teachings my tongue aches and it vibrates is like a tongue of war between my tongue and me wanting to put it against the roof of my mouth hence why it aches, I guess my tongue muscles is re-aligning.
It’s not likely that the exercises, alone, will change the alignment of your teeth. But they can certainly help you retrain your tongue to avoid thrusting. You are most certainly working against muscle memory. Good luck!
I just found out that I have this and I have a question. What if my problem is swallowing and now that I have orthodoncy for it is literally imposible for me to swallow the way you described, it's not that is awkward, is that i can't do it. Are there any steps I can do to go from nothing to that???
Instead of thinking that your tongue is moving backwards, consider that you are not letting your tongue come forward. Some people learn quickly, others take time. Even after it becomes easy, you should continue to check to make sure you aren’t relapsing.
@@championsmiles Thank you so much brent, that's the best way to think about it. like ur teeth are the enemy of your tongue lol so keep your tongue away from them. I'm actually thinking of putting a tic tac on the tip of my tongue against the roof like a rewarder.. what u think brent?
Sir I have tongue swelling and scalloped tongue since 2 month, and i dont have any problems in my tongue only swelling and scalloped, how i can solve my tongue swelling or scalloped problem please sir suggest me
I m lil confuse- my whole life i had kept my tongue same way u suggested that made my upper teeth come forward. Then i had braces i thot i was pushing my teeth with my tongue hence i started resting my tongue tip at back of my bottom teeth nd mid part at roof top..now i have tongue thrust..what shud i do exactly (S0 SHUD I REST MY TONGUE ON BACK ROOF OF MY TONGUE)
My tongue is big and pushes against the back of my teeth so I have an open bite in the back. My teeth all touch in the front but not in the back. Really hard to chew now
Same here. I just came across this video and i feel weird not allowing my tongue touch my front teeth like I’m frowning. How can we stop the saliva from forming inside the mouth?
How much practice does someone need to avoid tongue thrusting? I had a consultation recently and the orthodontist told me he's only seen 2 patients in his career relearn how to position their tongue. Just a suggestion: Dr. Frey please start working giving your videos better titles. This is such a helpful video however it took some digging to find. Outside of videos posted, there is nothing that states your a dentist or orthodontist. I think this could really help you gain more followers.
I’m not sure that it’s something that should be looked at as a pass/fail. From my standpoint, behavior modification includes a combination of awareness and habit breaking. You can’t take the tongue out of the mouth, so it will always be capable of applying pressure toward the teeth if pushing in that direction. My goal is for my patients to recognize what it means to have a tongue thrust (awareness) and help them learn how to keep their tongue from thrusting unnecessarily (habit breaking). I have had many patients achieve success in learning these exercises. Some folks can make an immediate change to tongue posture. Others take more time. Thank you for the suggestion! I never intended for this video or my channel to reach mass appeal. I made these videos so that I wouldn’t have to repeat myself multiple times daily to patients in my office and so that patients could reference the material from home. This video, in particular, has been extremely popular. I’m not surprised because tongue thrusting is so common. But the video was truly made to be played in the office. Thank you and good luck!
I have an over bite because my tongue keeps pushing against my teeth when I sleep, what should I do ? And how worse can it get if I don’t something about it now
The best thing you can do is schedule an exam with an orthodontist. Unfortunately, your questions can’t be answered thoroughly without a comprehensive exam. It could get worse if you do nothing, but proper treatment should be able to prevent that from happening. Thank you for the question!
Sir i when i sleep my tongue touches the back of upper teeth? Will this cause buck teeth or teeth forward? Will front teeth look more forward when we talk or smile?
This method is primarily used to prevent teeth from shifting back after completion of orthodontic treatment. I do not recommend it as a method to control the position of teeth in the absence of orthodontic treatment. If you are an adult, the position of your teeth is unlikely to change whether you learn this technique or not. In other words--if you don't have spacing, you probably won't see spacing develop even if you aren't practicing the exercises. If you already have spacing, but you don't learn the technique, it probably won't get much worse. With respect to your question, if you are undergoing orthodontic treatment, the position of the tongue during sleep is one of the most challenging aspects of controlling the tongue position. While we can improve the position of the teeth with treatment, we have to monitor the impact the tongue can have during sleep. However, if you are not undergoing orthodontic treatment, the tongue has probably already done whatever damage it will do. You may not be able to control the position during sleep, but practicing the technique while awake will cut down on 2/3 of the time each day. Good luck!
So for everyday I’m doing whatever the hell , my tongue should be comfortably resting at the roof of my mouth as long as it’s not touching my front teeth?
If you don't have spaces between your teeth, you may not need to worry about it. But for the patient trying to avoid spacing relapse or exacerbation, keep the tip of the tongue touching the roof of your mouth just behind the teeth
I have an overbite because I sucked my thumb until 11 years old. and I speak weirdly. ( lisps, and mushy sounds ( not clear pronounciates) - Is this something I should be worried about - also, do you think orthodontist can fix this with be being 15 without jaw surgery ..? Appreciate your work ! Keep it up
@@nasreenakhuda I think so yes, my chin sticks out bit if that's what u mean ?But no overly noticeable. No-one else would think anything of it. You only realise it if I ask them - ie. Does my chin stick out
@@championsmiles not like that sir. Actually im keeping my tongue on palate. But while breathing or taking breaks the tongue touches the back of upper teeth for a second. Then i place it on palate!!
That is a good question. I have not had patients report this to me and am not aware of a connection between the two, but could not rule it out. I would recommend that you ask your dentist or physician.
Not to mention it'll cost me $6,000 to fix but I won't know if it'll be a guarantee until mon. Or tue. So I'm pretty much making a $6,000 bet...and I suck at betting. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
lol "double untundre" playing with words. i like .. i SUCK with betting lol keeping my FINGER crossed . meaning, i suck my finger thumb which brought about open bite . i got you.
I’ve had my tongue crib for 2 days i literally want to cry every second of the day. I talk all day at work & this appliance make me sound like a COMPLETE IDIOT! I want to get it removed. I was sooo excited about the journey to fixing my habit but there has to be another way!!??
