She is flat out brilliant in this film. This should be the movie that finally allows horror to be taken seriously and rewarded with an Oscar. Every actor in this does an incredible job.
Toni Collette deserves all of the praise she is getting for Hereditary. The way her character begins to slip down the slope of psychological betrayal through a descent into madness is at times too horrific to bear. By the end she is a fragment of herself. Never seen an actress transition into such dangerous psychological territory with such command of character and performance. Truly one of the top 5 greatest female performances of all-time.
"Hereditary" is a masterpiece in the horror genre. The film really messed me up for several days! I could not stop thinking about it - it just gets under your skin in a very intense and frightening way. You really feel like you can't escape the horror of what's happening to this family. Toni Collette is sensational in the film and should absolutely win an Oscar for her work. It's one of the all time great performances in a horror film. She should already have won the best supporting actress Oscar for "The Sixth Sense"
It has one of the most gut wrenching, emotionally devastating scenes EVER in just the first third of the film! Completely original 99.9% of the time. The very end? Go see it and you tell me what film the last scene is derivative of............ I still enjoyed the hell out of it. Toni Collette deserves an Oscar for this. She can do "anguish" very, very well.
Man you're so right. I just watched it last night for the first time. The emotional and dramatic scenes just blew me away, and the horror? Forget about it, just amazing. So good
watched it last january and it was pheneomenal !!!! toni is easily one of the greatest actresses working today . such a talented and stunning woman . seems super nice too .
I just watched it with a friend and we were soooo tense that when the movie ended, we both realized we had a stomach ache from being so tense and scared. Though I'll say it's not for everyone. A lot of idiots at the cinema maybe hoped a slasher film and walked out saying the wasted 2 hours of their lives watching this movie.
I have come to realize that the majority of ppl who have hated this film also swear that films like Nightmare on Elm Street was the best horror film hands down...which wouldn't be so bad until you realize that they are talking about part 7...*shrug* They tend to enjoy the. Leprechaun & Child's Play franchise and literally scream out in horror when that doll (depending on the film) stabs the teenaged girl after she's fallen up, then down the stairs and then over her own high heel.
She absolutely killed it in this role. It would have been great to see her awarded with an Oscar, but apparently she wasn't even nominated. Does the Academy even watch 'horror' movies? If this wasn't a performance at least worthy of a nomination, I don't know what is. One of the best female performances of all time.
She was soooo good in the movie. My god her performance was on a different level. The movie blew me away, I'm a movie nut and this movie leaves me speechless.
This was a great film - strange, surprising, emotional, authentic, and off the rails in all the right ways. The chemistry between Toni Collette and Alex Wolff is phenomenal. And Ann Dowd is a national treasure.
Who else is completely angry that Toni didn’t even get an nom? And Toni is absolutely right about the film being beautifully made. That’s what makes this film a honest masterpiece. Who knew such a horror film can be beautiful at the same time.
Blackwood My favourite horrors: Hereditary, The Witch, Babadook, Creep 1 and the sequel, and It Follows. So literally everything mentioned here apart from creep lol!
@juneaug Lok No its not. Its a highly reviewed film by critics yet it didnt win any awards nor did it make alot of money so what your saying is non sense.
Horror movies don't suck because they are scary. They suck because so few of them are good. lol You can count the truly great horror films as rare at best. It's kind of like Sci-Fi because most that genre is crap as well. I guess it's why the genres are often mixed. Great Horror films include: The Omen, The Excorsist, The Shining, The Ring, The Thing, The Sixth Sense. I could add a few more but after these, the pickings get slim.
Mike Burns oh i think it's so strange. I think the horror genre is the one that has the absolute most potential to grow. But to add a few others: Rosemary's baby. Repulsion. Don't look now. The witch.
Halloween 78', It Follows, The Witch, Psycho, Nightmare on Elm st, Annihilation, Silence of The lambs, Carrie, Alien, Bride of Frankenstein, Scream, A Quite Place, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Let the right one in, Audition, The Host, The Guest, Dracula, Jaws, The Omen, Rosemary's Baby, The Fly, Peeping Tom, Black Christmas, Invasion of the Body snatchers, Dont look now, Wicker man, Last House on the left, Dawn of the dead, Night of the living dead, Village of the damned, The Innocents all say hi.
I don’t think this film was fantastic. But it was definitely better than most horror films. There was a lot of build up with the characters and their family dynamic that didn’t seem to go anywhere, leaving me to feel very dissatisfied. And for a film to spend so much time building and carefully crafting those dynamics, all for it to be dashed aside in the very last act felt like a bit of a waste. Still, Toni herself was fantastic, and that one scene in particular of her reacting to what happens to Charlie (you know what I’m talking about, if you’ve seen it) will forever stay with me. She definitely deserves an award for this film.
I find it kind of funny that she said snakes and spiders scare her. Does Australia have loads of them? I mean, she most likely doesn't do outdoor activities, but still. 😨🤪😳
Nah I'm an Aussie and I've seen one snake in my life. And it was tiny. Most live in the cities. When I was in the States though I saw some spiders that terrified me. Spindly long legs n shit lol.
I watched this twice because I knew I would’ve missed things and it had the same effect on me twice one of the creepiest best acted horror movies in modern horror great movie and Toni was a revolution
She is amazing in this film! I just saw it a few weeks ago on Prime. It's a bit of a slow burn, and I actually caught myself nodding off a bit...until the real spooky stuff started! Then I was hooked! So naturally I had to watch it about 5 more times AND rent the DVD from the library for the special features lol. This movie dares to take you on an obscene journey into madness, in the tradition of Rosemary's Baby. A must see, even if you don't like horror films, just to witness an actress giving the performance of a lifetime. Alex Wolff who plays her son gave an actually compelling performance.
I wonder if Hereditary is really something the Good Morning America audience is gonna be into... Fucking amazing movie, but yeah don't watch that film if you're still dealing with grief over the death of a loved one.
Not even an Oscar nomination for Hereditary. The Academy has always sucked. They gave Grace Kelly an Oscar over Judy Garland for A Star Is Born. They are so weird.
